What do you think about the sacking of Professor David Nutt?

In the UK, Professor David Nutt was asked to resign after his claims that cannabis is less dangerous than alcohol/Nicotine and that Ecstasy is less harmful than horse-riding.
What do you think about his sacking? How can a politician sack his scientists for telling the truth ?
What are your views?

I think the school did that for possible backlash because by saying that, people may think that it's better to smoke contraband than it is to drink and that ecstasy is not as harmful as its portrayed to be thus making them more likely to try it out.
Some people are unfortunately that dumb to think that way, so I believe the University/ School sacked him for fear of backlash in having someone with those views employed with them.
