What can you say about writing short words in text messages?

Writing short word like in text messages is likely to be a trend, nowadays. Text messages limit us with the numbers of letters and words to use, in result, we tend to maximize or do some short-cuts to words. For example, we use 'r' instead of 'are', 'y' instead of 'why', 'u' instead of 'you', etc.
For me, it affects the good writing and correct spelling, so the need for proofreading and auto-checker is very important. With this, my spelling sometimes bothered me because I was used in shortening words like in text messaging.

I generally dont like sending text messages, i prefer calling people instead. But i'm familier with shortening words, since online gaming has similar phrases aswell. While chatting with people ingame i use those short versions to type faster; but while i'm working (translation) i haven't encountered similar difficulties.

I know what you mean. Also sometimes people shorten words and you have no clue what their meaning, because their the only ones that use it. My friend does that and have the time I don't know if it was a typo or she meant to do it. I know this could effect you in the working world especially if you do e-mails and letters like that at work.
