Are you worried about your job?

Our brilliant government officials and all of the geniuses who act as pundits on television do, of course, understand the current economic troubles in America (and the world) and, because they know so much, they always have the right answers and their proposed solutions would solve our financial woes if we would only pay attention. Right. For me and the people I know, however, a reduction of one-quarter point in the interest rate paid on a loan to Chrysler from a bank in Luxembourg is not exactly comforting. We are worried about our jobs. I am worried. I am a supervisor. I work very hard and I am very, very good at what I do. But I know I could find myself unemployed tomorrow. Jobs are scarce and the prospect of losing the one I have bothers me a great deal.

I was worried for a while. I am still not totally comfortable but I try not to worry about it as much as I was. I am a supervisor at a factory too. I started out on the assembly line 11 years ago. I do know that I will at least have somewhere to go for a while if they have cutbacks. I have already taken precautions and made sure that my bills would be paid if I have to take a paycut or something. I have eliminated most of my debt to prepare. I think that all we can do is to prepare and do the best we can. I have also started going to school to make myself more competitive in the job market if something were to happen.

It happened. My concern was well-placed. We lost a lot of floor people and needed fewer supervisors. Four positions were cut and mine was one of them. They did not downsize on a seniority basis, which would have meant I would be safe for a long time. They eliminated some time slots and mine was one of them. I have many skills and I am very reliable so I am sure I will find something soon that will turn out okay. Not a good time of year to be out of work, though.
