Can I have my smoothie?

In some bizarre proceedings, I had some more bizarre experience of ordering a smoothie and having tough time really getting to sip it. That was a smoothie day and I craved for it like anything. But the waiter intervened and asked for any discount card that she thought I was having. I said no. She now got an opportunity to persuade me to open one with the outlet. I denied outright. I asked for my smoothie but after some time she came back with a smile telling me that she has a great offer which would give me the card free! Well nearly free if I like to have smoothies 3 times a week! I said no. This time stern and with a fervent cry for my smoothie.
Guess what, she came back again with a form and asked me to fill the form about my personal details. I refused to give my phone number for which she asked for my email ID. I gave one only when she promised my smoothie. Finally I could sip my glass of smoothie! Marketing and and business strategy can just about kill you, I realised that day.
Any story to share?

No you may NOT have your smoothie, but if you send me a DNA sample plus $19.95 for postage and handling, I might be able to arrange something.
I've faced similar situations myself at Ruby Tuesday in Nariman Point, Mumbai. They were always SO persistent that I sign up for a discount card and it ended up getting to the point where I became quite angry about it. I eventually found out that staff are incentified to sell customers these cards, so they of course push them like crazy! I can appreciate waiters wanting to push these cards on people given the extra money they can earn, but they need to realise that there's only so far they should press the issue! We go out to places like this to eat, drink and relax, not beat off hawkers!

I can understand the waiters point of view but they should know how much, when and where to push. They just cannot spoil our beautiful lazy days, can they! I know exactly how you had felt at Ruby. I was disgusted, so much so, that I thought of walking out once but gave an instant whatever-came-to-my-mind kinda email ID and finished the smoothie. Obviously it was a bad day.

At the garment store recently, when i had in any case decided to take up one of thier special offers of 3+3. That it self what quite a decisions and then this sales guy kept constantly talking about the great shirts and the sale offers that he had, till i reached a point of irritation and told him that if i was interested i would take it.
The petrol bunk when i want to just fil up fuel and get out, the guys selling thier petro cards with thier faces right right into the car. I get quite flustered with them that now i get to bluntly say NO and give them quite a stare.

Hi dear!
It is too bad that you just could not enjoy your smoothie because of discourteous marketing people. I feel that once you had said ‘No’ for availing any scheme, they people had no business to press you further. Many a times marketing phone calls are received and I simply say ‘I am not interested’. Prolonging conversation does not help either caller’s purpose or my purpose. Today only I received a call for issuing me a free Credit from an executive of a private bank. I refused to accept the offer, but the caller kept on persisting saying that they are giving my free accidental insurance of Rs.5 lakh and I need to only sign the application form, there is no fee for the card and it is for the life time. I again retorted that I do not require any new credit card, however, the caller did not pay any heed to my statement and finally to get rid of her, I had to say that please call me some other day. These marketing people just get glued to you like anything. I dislike receiving such calls or facing such people (though they may doing their duty).

Obviously you are an esteemed customer deepak. I hate such calls as well. They have all lovely initial offers but you get to know the reality after you succumbed to them. I registered to DND but still I get atleast one every day!

It feels awful! The promotional SMSes come at any hour of the day! I get one such early in the morning almost every day! Why on earth!

Yes, you are very right that these people do not reveal you their entire plans, terms and conditions and hidden cost (if any). Even if they are providing us something free of cost, they take away our personal details, like cell phone numbers and email IDs on their application forms and disturb us on our cell phones through other means/channels. I may add here, now a days, new marketing gimmicks have come up. As we donot entertain the audio calls of these people, they have now started sending uncalled for and unwanted SMSs to us to promote their products. Imagine, receiving an SMS, when you are sleeping and you waking up on the tone of SMS, imagining that it may be a sweet message from a dear friend/relative and ending up seeing a promotional SMS for sale of a propery, you just feel like hitting your head on the wall.

The waitress must have sensed your intense craving for a smoothie that she thought she can make you agree to anything if she played her cards right.
Nope, that hasnt happened to me as far as I can recall. I dont think anyone has approached me like that. Maybe the way that I 'attack' my food just scare them off, either that or they think that I dont have any extra cash or something to pay for whatever it was they were offering.LOL

Hahahaha...you are sweet!
I am sure my craving could be felt even by the people sitting distantly. I was way too enthusiastic but didn't quite look as if I could spend the extra cash on the card.

I have never come across that in a shop. The most that happens is the assistant asking if I'd like their store card, but a simple "No thanks" ends it. They never push.
Telemarketers, on the other hand, are REALLY pushy. The only way, after the first refusal, is to say, "I'm sorry, but you won't take 'No' for an answer, so I am hanging up"
Here in Australia we can now register our phone number and somehow or other (I don't understand the technicalities) our phone is blocked from Telemarketers. That is ONE good thing our Government has done.

Even we hand a 'Do Not Disturb' registry here were we have to register not to be disturbed by companies. But then it hardly works I guess.

No stories to share (other than when pushy telephone sales people call, I ask if they can hold and then place the receiver in a drawer till they go away), but this sales person was clearly "over the top." Sure, maybe she was making a bonus on every signup-- but that was just plain annoying.
I know the economy is difficult in many parts of the world, but there's a point where "enough is enough."

Hi Mimpi! I think that what she did, is too much. I know that business is important. Strategy and public relations and of course, marketing, but, hmmm, that's too much if you have already said "No" twice and still she came back, without your smoothie and with a form. That's too much. I can't say I would have been as gracious as you. Lol. Especially, if I was in a hurry or really hungry. Lol.
I remember one time, something almost similar happened to me. I like to make my groceries quietly, going from one end of the store to the other. And one of the promodiser who was selling like a savory mix, magic mix powder, I don't know, Lol. She asked me if I wanted to buy one and I just shook my head and say "No thanks". She went on and on, like reciting a speech, and started following me down the aisle. I said "No" again. And then, I was searching for an item and I bumped in her again. She went on and on again. I got angry, and told her that there was a difference between marketing and harrasing people..Lol..Yeah, really, I am not that gracious when it comes to too much marketing. Lol (^^,)

I really hate when people push too much and I believe, most are not gullible, people have their opinion and choices. However, I do know someone who is a delight to sales person! I think you did the right thing. After a point we have to be rude.

I would have been pretty annoyed and probably the next time I would have blended one of my cooked sweet potatoes in milk and frozen the "shake" overnight and then taken it the next day where it would have been just about right for sipping by lunch time. Then I could go to the park or somewhere nice instead of the restaurant. No solicitations, no tips, and a delicious and more healthy shake, I mean smoothie, lol.
I do like my sweet potato shakes better than ice cream, and although they are naturally sweet I do usually add just a little bit of healthy agave syrup to enhance the flavor.

hi mimpi let me see the man on the phone who was bound and determined to sell me a kirby and when I told him I no longer owned a house, he kept right on telling me all the wonderful things you could do with this fantastic vacumn cleaner. Again I said, but I am here in Gold crest and have just a room with a roommate.the caregivers do all the vacumning then he had the audacity to tell me that he could give Gold Crest a real good deal on a dozen vaumn cleaners so I backed up, pucked up my lips and went into a warhoop sounding
yell. that did it. He had hung up .

I think that's the last thing we can do and they just would not give up till to resort to that! They are specially trained to push people and can even swallow a lot from the other side. I know its their job and they could earn incentives but still there is a limit.

Yesterday I went out shopping with my mother and we entered a boutique because mum spotted a top she really liked. We walked in and within two seconds a well groomed lady stood by our side never to leave again, I thought we would have to take her home! My mother tried the top on and decided to purchase it. The well groomed saleslady said that it was a great idea because just for that day they had twenty percent off everything and was my mum sure she didn’t want to buy anything else. To this mum replied’ “No thank you”. The lady insisted that this was a great opportunity and went on and on and my mum kept shaking her head saying no. Mum paid for her purchase and the saleswoman asked her AGAIN whether she wanted anything else and to this mum and I replied in unison, “NO!” and walked out.
My mum loves her new top and it sounds like you enjoyed your smoothie but what a pity we have to put up with such persistence!

Hi Paula!
That was exactly my case. A way too much persistence especially on a day when I was dying for smoothie and wanted a relaxed evening. I am a kind of person who finds it hard to say NO but I did said it loud and clear still the waiter couldn't get my message. Yo really have to be stern to have your say sometimes.
I am glad that your mum liked the top.

LOL wow talk about persistence!
I had a similar experience with a lady who tried to sell me some perfume in a department store. I was looking for my particular brand and she kept coming back with something else that's on promotion or on sale that comes with freebies (extra bag, etc, etc, etc) and all I had to do was sign up for a membership discount card and pay for it. Yeah, PAY for it. I wasn't interested so I outright said, can you PLEASE stop it because I'm not interested.
I think any retail store would love to have pushy sales people. Sometimes while I think it's their job, it gets annoying.

Yes, there are both sides of the story. But obviously we are humans and selfish. Too must pushing freaks me out for my decision is mostly not based on endorsements or offers.

Well, what you know. Everything is part of marketing and making money. This is the same as when a bank offers you credit card that is free for life. But after a while, some people from the bank will call you and offer you this and that. You will end up like paying more on the insurance than the credit card fee.
Sometimes, it would be better to have your lunch, or smoothies at home. It will only give you a messy kitchen, but at least it will give you peace of mind, and save you from being annoyed.

Geez lady, just give her the smoothie already!
My pet peeve is with telemarketers that just don't take no for an answer. I just end up hanging up after the first no and not giving them an opportunity to argue with me.
