When was the last time you wrote a cheque? or a check? :)

In Canada we spell it cheque, in some parts of the world it's a check. Either way it's pronounced the same and it's a piece of paper that you fill out to give money to someone else through your bank account. In 1994 I opened a chequing account and ordered 200 cheques. I still have over 60 left. I refuse to order new cheques even thought my address is no longer the same as the one written on my cheques, and the line where you write the date has "19__" written on it because they assumed they would be used before the year 2000. Anyways, I was looking into ordering new cheques but stopped when I saw how freakin expensive they are ... talk about a rip off, over $20 for about 50 of them. Wasn't there a time when banks offered free cheques. Since I barely use cheques I decided not to order any new ones. Do you still use cheques? Or do you pay all your bills through online banking or through some other means?

I try not to use too many checks, because yes they are expensive. The only thing I usually write a check for is rent, and the only reason I do that is because they charge to pay it online (which is totally dumb!) Hopefully we will not have the rent issue soon and we will be able to pay everything online.

Thank God for small mercies…here in India we still get free cheques but I doubt how long it will last…any time you know some smart aleck from an equally smart business school would start the process of charging for bank cheque LOL…but surely banks should offer free cheque books as part of the service for the business you’re giving them by keeping your money. I usually write a cheque every month but that’s for me LOL…I drop my salary cheque in the bank and withdraw cash for my monthly expenses thru a self cheque. There’s a requisition slip at the end of the cheque book which one has to fill up and submit at the back to get a new set of cheque books. Bills and sundry items are paid by cash…annually I write out a few cheques for my insurance, that’s all.

Dear friend, Last week I had availed a loan and had to give 12 cheque leafs. I hope that would be my last time I had wrote a cheque. But before that many my cash transactions have been through cheque even though I also do online transactions. Online transactions are is more than my cheque transactions.

I wrote a check to my mother 2 months ago for helping me buy some books. I could have just gave her the money but when I opened my checking account, they gave me checkbooks and charged me twenty something dollars for it so might as well use it as much as I can.

GoGirl hi I still use checks and I only use about three each month so I also have over thirty left. yes now the checks' are so expensive. I do use all those free stickers with my name and address on them to cover up the old address and date on my checks.,that seems to work just fine too. I am thinking of trying to pay both the internet bill and the phone bill through online banking,as it wou ld save me in postage for sure.

Well I've never actually wrote a check in my life but I have used a debit card. Until last year I wasn't able to even have a checking account because I turned eighteen about half a year a go. Now I have a checking account but I don't have a check book yet so I just use a debit card.

Hi GoGirl49, I cant even remember the last time I wrote a cheque. I pay most bills online or with my credit card or laser. I don't even know where my cheque book is these days lol. Now I will have to have a look and see if I can find it. We spell it cheque here too.

I hardly ever write checks anymore but just this week I had to write one. It felt weird. I like to do everything online.

I pay most things online now, but occasionally I will write a check to send for a bill (by the way, in England we say 'cheque' too but I live in America now and have got used to saying 'check'!) I guess most stores don't use checks now.

Well - mostly its online banking I use nowadays if I have to deposit from afar, and before I had online banking, it was going to the bank and depositing in bank account. I never had a checkbook. I am 23 and had my first account when I was 16. Most shops nowadays, have a cashpoint for credit/debit cards anyway.

I would say I pay 98% of bills online. However there are a few things I have to pay with a check. In fact I just mailed a check for taxes on property that I own. I usually pay my mortgage by check because I believe they charge you if you pay online. So that is the one check I make out every month for sure.

I remember when I ordered my checks it was only $20 for 200 of them and those are the nice specialized ones. Now I haven't ordered checks for about 5 years now and I still probably have 100-150 left. For me the only time I ever use them now is whenever I'm paying my electric bill since paying online gives me an extra $3 charge. Everything else I have to pay is paperless including my rent and credit card bills. Otherwise I just pay with my debit card. For me I don't think it's going to be worth buying them afterward because everything is slowly becoming free online payment and also a lot of stores don't accept checks.

I haven't written a check for about 6 months. And the only reason for that was I was getting new auto insurance and they needed an actual check but then they took it automatically from checking account each month. I think everything is done electronically now and most people don't write checks. Especially with debit and credit cards on the high.

I wrote a check just 2 days ago. That's because a merchant (someone I do business with) wanted to get his pay right away and I didn't have the time. So, I just wrote a cheque and gave it to him to cash in on the same day.
