You are a soldier, and you've been asked by your superiors to drop a bomb to a place where there were so many innocent lives that will be sacrificed. Knowing that it is against your will and knowing that you have a responsibility and duty to your country. Will you drop the bomb and why? I know this is a hard question but i just want to see how people will deal with this kind of dilemma.

Quite simple: I would not be a soldier. Well - it's extremely unlikely. There'd have to be a civil war (or something) in which there was actually a side worth fighting for! I certainly wouldn't kill for "my country", or any misguided sense of duty, loyalty or responsibility. I wonder how the pilots who dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki felt?

Yes i was actually thinking of the very same thing, that is why i asked this kind of question. What if, you are a soldier? No choice of being a soldier?

even if im a soldier.. doesnt mean im god man..i dont have the right to take lives..especially innocent ones..i don think sacrificing a lotta people's ife is something bigger than some mission given to me..i rather lose my job and work as a farmer than do such a heartless thing..

Yes, I'd drop it. If it meant that the war ended sooner and it meant that no more ground troops were absolutely necessary, you better believe I'd drop the bomb. Look at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. America and her allies would have had to sacrifice more troops' lives by using a ground assault. The nuclear bomb--as horrible as it was, and as much as America hated to use it (and we did...no one wants to see that sort of carnage), was necessary.

Hi RJ, I will not drop the bomb-- i can't take it sacrificing innocent people just to follow a command from the higher ups. if that will be the end of my career and my life for disobeying my superiors so be it. at least it's only my life that was sacrificed...

I won't drop the bomb. It will be most hurtful. i know i have my duties but it doesn't give me a right to destroy and take lives.

Even if it cost you your own life? Your superior may kill you or kick you off duty for that behavior. O well this time, conscience prevails! Two thumbs up! Thank you very much for the response.

I will drop the bomb to my superiors' house.. LOL, I think I'd rather resign as a soldier, I will not sacrifice innocent lives just to fulfill my duties as a soldier. :)

rjvb26, First of all, you need to understand about warfare nowadays. Before any bombing mission, there will be a need to determine the purpose of the mission. Then, there will be a lot of work done in gathering ground and enemy information. There will be a lot of work done prior such a devastating mission, so that the attack will not inflict innocent casualties. So, your superior will always present all these findings in an ops order before you or I can carry out a mission. Basing on the chain of command and events, I would carry out my mission orders and drop that bomb. Any bystander casualties is just unforeseen and unfortunate. Under conventional warfare, I do not think that there are any missions that are carried out on non military targets. So, under these circumstances, I will drop or launch the bomb. Bombs away!

You are right , cause you know there are also some cons if you will not drop the bomb the cons will not only be for your self but also for the people you love. And nowadays superiors will not make a move unless planned. Nice response!

i will not do that. i will just fly the plane to some place else and immediately after that i will just hide and will not show up again and report back to my officer. i will just try to live in jungle where they could not possible tract or trace me so that i can live at peace away from all the responsibilities of being a soldier.

absolutely not. people come before abstract ideas like duty. i know there would be repercussions but i wouldn't kill innocent people.

What it you were? What what will you do? TO think that if you will not drop it, the enemy will drop a bomb to your country and your family will the once to be sacrificed if you did not succeed dropping it.

If it happens to me, i will drop the bomb near in a area where there will be the least casualty. In so doing, I still obeyed my superior but kept casualties at the minimum. Cheers!

hi,rjvb26! first of all,I wouldn't like to be a soldier.if I had to be and were asked to carry out such a mission,I wouldn't think I have alternatives.that is,I would cast the bomb at the goal.and that is why I am not willing to be a soldier.it's so unfair to sacrifice civilians in any wars. but a unknown,a screw in the huge machine of country cannot disobey orders from the superior, neglecting the danger of being sent to court martial and called betrayer...no one can afford these. so I wish the world ramains peaceful and no one have to deal with such kind of dilemmma! have a nice day!

Well just now i responded to one of your discussion on bombs, a soldier is bound to obey the duty, so if it is me, then i have to obey too, the answer is so simple.. Thanks for sharing. God bless you. Cheers. Prof

well, first i would drop the Bomb....but with out any thing inside the bomb. and then when the officer asked me why it didn't explode, i would tell the officer " you told me to drop it, you didn't tell me to put the bomb in the shell and blow it up". of course, if he get's mad then in their favor, i would blow up the bomb....in the base. No way am blowing up innocent civilians, that's covert operations already
