Why am I up in the middle of the night?

I sure wasn't planning on it! I was sleeping away, maybe not the deepest sleep, but sleeping when suddenly, I heard what sounded like someone knocking! What? I wake up pretty instantly, but kind of confused. I look around. Nobody in the room and no further noise. I get up and check a few closed doors (bathroom and pantry) nothing. I even go the the front door - tho WHY it would be that loud in my bedroom I DON'T know - and nothing. I'm going to guess it was a cat or the dog, scratching, but it startled me awake and now I can't go back to sleep. Probably the cats mugging me for attention didn't help either. I hate being awaken in the middle of the night. I have enough problems as it is sleeping because I wake up to even roll over. Do you hate it too? Grrrr - sometimes...

Yep I do hate that. I'm up pretty early too. My hubby turned up the thermostat before he went to bed and I couldn't take it anymore. I was just too hot and then of course 2 of my kids woke up then the 3rd. But the older 2 went back to bed thankfully, they have school, the lil guy does not. I've also been woken up in the middle of the night by pets too either knocking something over or as I like to call it "elephant races" between the 3 cats.

Yeah, I've had cats land on me in my sleep, but most of them don't run over me - they are pretty good about mostly sleeping at night

That has happened to me before! Years ago I even called the Police in the middle of the night because someone was banging on my back door! These days it’s my dog that wakes me up, not because she barks but because her kennel, where she likes to sleep, is right underneath my bedroom window under the porch and whenever she moves the whole thing makes quite a noise; she even drags her food bowl along the ground and of course manages to wake me up and making going back to sleep near impossible. I hate it too ElicBxn!

YIKES! of course the dogs would go nuts of anyone banged on the back door... besides, the gate is locked so they'd've had to climb or jump the fence I think it might've been Cujo scratching, he likes to sleep behind the roommate's door and that's just on the other side of the wall of our rooms. think I'm finally getting tired again - only have about an hour more to sleep!

I've been having alot of trouble sleeping since my back's been hurting so badly. Some nights I can get to sleep pretty easily, and others I end up abck on the computer because it simply hurts too bad to get comfortable. MY husband on the other hand hasn't had much trouble getting to sleep, he has just been waking up really early.

when i was alone i often had trouble sleeping. if i woke up to a sound, i was to frightened to go back to sleep. ive always been plagued with insomnia anyway. now i usually figure its my son doing something and go back to sleep. sometimes when my dog scratches an ear or something, it will bump the floor, her paw that is or the wall and sound like someone knocking. thats probably what it was.

I think Cujo was scratching and hit the wall, since he's taken to sleeping behind the roomie's door and that's a shared wall

I hate being woken up in the middle of the night. It is such a lonly time and everything you do sounds so loud.I dropped a teaspoon once and it sounded like a big bass drum being banged.Normally come on here and make the time go quicker.

I so HATE being waken up out of a deep sleep! After I've fully awaken, there's no way I could even return to that wonderful slumber...I wonder why that is.

I hate waking up in the night, my thought would be that a wild critter had gotten into your attic somehow. You know a raccoon, squirrel, possum, bat? Is that possible? Even birds will get into mine and wake me up.

we remodeled 10 yrs ago and they said the attic was tight then - and the last time someone was up there, and it was a bit ago - they said it was still tight I think the cats would let us know if something were up there that didn't need to be...

I would hear what sounded like people outside the house and all kinds of strange noises inside--it turns out it was my dog Gus, snoring and breathing heavily under the covers! I was concerned but not scared because one of the dogs would have been on alert if it had been people. Listen carefully next time you hear the knock or another sound and I'll bet it's either one of your cats or a noise you think you hear but don't because you're waking up mid-dream.

ordinarily, if I'm coming out of a dream I remember it - I think I was already half up anyway when it happened I've about decided it might've been the dog behind the roomie's door scratching

Maybe you just dreamed it. Dreams can seem so real sometimes. I hate waking up in the night like that and not being able to get back to sleep.

You should try to see a psychiatrist. I'm not saying you're crazy or anything, but the guy'd be able to know what sort of right medicine you should take if that happens often.

I think it was the dog scratching behind the roommate's door - not some phantom sound - I may be crazy, but I don't need a shrink

I very very rarely wake up in the middles of the night. I know that I am very lucky in that I can sleep straight through until morning. If there is ever a natural disaster such as an earthquake here then I would sleep right through it If it ever happens that I do wake up then I can never go back to sleep so I just get up and come on here

This happened to me too; especially when I'm already having enough sleep. On my rest day and I got to sleep at night, I would dream about something and halfway I would wake up, and sometimes I would go to the kitchen and don't know for what, grab a bottle of cold water and just drink it. Then going back to the bed, and closing my eyes, and my mind just will not sleep. LOL. And then I would start to hear imaginable things like the car parking at night, or cars in front of the road roaring by, chairs being pulled and whatnot and a lot of scary thoughts too. But I just shrug it off and the noise starts to deafen when I switch on the TV. And then the TV watches me, ha..

I have bouts of insomnia.. so sleep when it happens is a luxury for me.Also as a light sleeper I wake up suddenly ...my home is old so it creaks and groans can be startling at times when I don't expect it.And feel compelled to check the house. Then I try and get back to sleep but it just doesn't happen.I can function on only 4 hours sleep but a longer sleep would be bliss I envy those deep sleepers that if a bomb went off they'd not know it and sleep away. And as most pets are know for their nocturnal mischief..lol...well that can't be helped. But yeh I do hate be woken from a peaceful sleep.

I know exactly what you are going through. The other day i was sound asleep just me and my daughter (who sleep in my bed with me) and i hear a really loud truck. First i sit up and look out the window and nothing so i thought maybe it is just the big semi trucks that drive the highway about 20 feet from the house. We live about 20 minutes out of town and never have unexpected visitors. There are maybe three other houses that are not close enough to hear them driving to and from home. So eventually i fall back to sleep when i thought i heard someone talk and it freaked me out because my future mother-in-law never locks any of the doors!! It is only me, my daughter and her living in the house and we all go to sleep at the same time.Slowly I get up out of bed and look out my door and nothing, walked through the house and no one was there so i went to lay back down. I was still a little freaked out but then managed to pass out for the rest of the night. In the morning i woke up because i heard someone walk through the front door so i grabbed my blanket and put it up over my head when i heard my room door open and in walks my BOYFRIEND! I don't think i have ever been that scared in my life but now we just laugh about it. I think everyone has those nights when you just wake up so no apparent reason. i learned to wear myself out during the day so when night comes i am exhausted and will sleep soundly through the night. i hope you got some humor out of the story and i hope you get to sleeping better- kaseyrenee
