ideas for low fat cooking

I am trying to eat better and dad just got diagnosed with diabetes. I have been trolling diabetic web sites but need more help. I am looking for ideas to help him eat better with out his knowledge. He is in absolute denial and thinks it isnt worth watching his diet. I have switched to olive oil, scaled back on starches. His biggest downfall is baked goods. Any ideas have to be as close as possible to the fatty stuff. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Try checking out some vegetarian food blogs. I have a food blog and follow many other food blogs as well. It seems to me that vegetarian blogs have lots of recipes to prepare things that are low in fat and in sugar too. My blog is posted on my profile if you are interested.

Add fiber to everything! It is easier then many think. Even a cup of tea can get a gram or two from products like Splenda with fiber. Wheat germ can be added to almost every baked good to up the fiber content as well. For me living on the weight watchers diet but basing off of 25 grams of fiber a day works well.

You can look online for diabetic recipes or in cook books. We eat a lot of chicken at our house and lots of fruits and veggies. I'm not sure if he can eat a lot of fruit though but maybe that's natural sugars that he can have. I've never had to really watch my sugar intake but we still try to eat good because we try to watch our weight and eat healthier. It's good that you have cut back on the starches cause they turn into sugar and don't let him eat a lot of bread either. I guess if he likes cookies and cakes and stuff like that you could make him some with the diabetic recipes or buy him the ones in the store for diabetics. There is also a class you can take if you ask your doctor about it that is for teaching people and their families about how to cook and eat being diabetic because my mom and her fiance had to take the class. He has diabetes and they were about to put him on insulin but he took the class and knows how to eat better having it.

great ideas and that is what I am trying to do. I dont want him to so much notice all the changes I make, he does not like change! Grumpy old man!

What you can do is to substitute half the fat in the baked goods with unsweetened applesauce. This works good with cookies and squares Also you could substitute whole wheat flour for part of the flour. It does work best on brownies, chocolate stuff, and spice cake though. Also if you put whole wheat flour in the baked goods, they will fill him up faster and he would not be snacking as much.

That is a good idea. He like wheat so that wont be a big deal! I dont like wheat, but I can always sneak out for a treat!

well what i would suggest is to go to the library and see what sort of cook books they have available for people that are on low carb, low fat diets. the libraries that are in my area have a ton of cooks books. probably about 4 shelves full. i am sure you are bound to find something there.

here is how you can reduce fat intake while still eating the same food: -eat egg white only, egg yolk contains high fat -try to eat chicken instead of beef or pork, because chickens contains much lower fat -when buying or cooking meat, cut off all the fat part -drink clear water, most drinks contains high sugar which gives extra energy which will be stored as fat -Eat more vegetables -eat brown rice instead of white rice (white rice makes you more hungry) remember, dieting alone will never fix the problem. your dad needs to exercise in order to get healthy.

thank you for the great ideas! As far as exercise, he is using a stationary bike and walking his dog. I am very proud of him for doing this! very little bit counts!

Healthy food is very important,if you want to keep healthy,you had to eat per day of vegetables,fruits,multi-fiber stuff,if eat to much junk food every day,if will cause bad effects on the body.

Hey, diabetes isn't about fat but about sugars, do search that up because it's really serious. What you should watch is sugars and carbs, not fats!
