This is a question from my friend? Would you giving your kids money to buy food during recess time or would you rather packed foods for them? When is the right time kids must be trusted to spend their money wisely on their food? Thank you so much in advance for sharing your points of view.

i was 6 when my mom trusted me with lunch money so i might do that to my child also but i am glad that they have food at school where they eat together. but when she grows up i'd probably trust her with both food and money.

I'm grateful for how my son's school has it setup. Parents have a school meals account on CafePrepay.com for their kids' school meals, and parents log in and pay that way. When the kids enter the cafeteria lunch line, they actually type in a PIN on the computer, and voila. A lot of parents can fill out a form to see if their child qualifies to receive free lunches, and my son qualified, so now I don't have to pay anything. At the beginning of this school year, we had to send our kids in with a certain amount of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters for a Math project they would be doing. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of sending in money with my son, but I did it anyway since we were supposed to. Well I was told that he took that money and bought ice cream out of the cafeteria with it, and they told me I had to pay the cafeteria back .50. So I made my son pay for it out of his own money (from his money bank at home) since that was HIS wrongdoing, and he needed to learn a lesson.

Hi there!
We always pack home cooked lunch to kids when they go to school. We normally discourage them to buy food from the school canteen, as it may not be healthy or fresh.

Well when at school I think from about 12 onwards disregarding school though home life they get what they are given here unless they have a weekend job and buy it themselves or move out and have their own home then they can pick and choose what they eat until then its what I give them or they go hungry.

I think it is best to pack the food and give it to them.Giving money would give them the freedom that may be more than required for their age.As they are easily influenced and impressed at such a young age, the children amy not know how to use the money.Maybe they may use it for some wrong purpose and pick up bad habits.Hence I feel it is not advisable.

That is a good question. I always packed what my daughter ate. That way I had more control in what she was eating. At fourteen I finally started letting her get her food on her own. To be honest, I dont think she is making as good of choices as I would prefer but I think she is old enough!
