If you could change one thing about your home, what would it be?

We bought our house not too long ago because there was one aspect about the house that stood out to us, it had the most beautiful double mantle over the fireplace and that was the selling point of the house for us. Never mind the fact that the bathroom could have been considered a biohazard and the kitchen really needs to be updated.
Before we moved into our house, I insisted that the bathroom be redone, and it looks awesome now, I've had people tell me that it reminds them of the hotel bathrooms that you see on television but you never experience in person because the rooms are too expensive.
Now, however, the one thing that I want to change about the house is the kitchen. I want to tear down all of the old cabinets and put in new ones, I want a built-in dishwasher and also a built-in microwave. I just really want to update the kitchen to fit in with this century, not the 1960s when our house was built.
Share with me what you'd like to change about your house and how you picture it to be when that one thing is done.

Our Pre-fabricated home needs a lot of work. I would love to remodel my kitchen so I can have better lighting. I also need more cabinet space. I also need to get the back deck redone. I know this will take money and unfortunately we do not have any extra money (we only have enough for the bare necessities). I have been looking for work, but with the bad economy I have had no success at all. I hope the economy will get better soon so I can get work.

The economy being the way that it is right now is the main reason that we haven't gotten the kitchen in our home redone yet. It had been our plan to do it this year, but the fact of my husband losing all of his overtime has not helped us at all and we had to use our savings to keep our day to day life going. Best of luck to you in trying to get work.

I know the economy has affected a lot of people. I am sorry that your husband has lost all of his overtime especially since it is so close to the holidays. My husband had asked his boss for an extra hour of work each day (he works three hours now and wanted four hours a day) and his boss said there was no money in the budget, but yet his boss hired two new people full-time. I hope things get better for your husband.

Your home sounds so wonderful. I grew up in a house that had mantle pieces in all rooms. It was the focal part of the room and the furniture was arranged around the fire place. Coal fires in the winter etc. However I no longer live in the U.K but in the West Indies.
I am in my retirement home and can retire when I have finished paying for it! It is just 2 bedrooms but I love it. If I could I would erect Georgian fretwork at the front of the house but it is too expensive for me to do. Not a real problem as I am so happy with what I have. I like this house more than the house we had on the farm. Blessings and I am sure that one day you will be abke to change the cabinets

It's true, there are often things that we want to do with our houses that we won't ever be able to afford. However, I know even if the things that we don't want to do with our house never do get done, the day that we mail in the last payment is going to be a very joyful day for us. And for you in your retirement home, I definitely know that it will be for you.

That is probably the biggest thing tht a lot of people would like to change about their homes. We too lived with my mother until recently and it was a very big blessing for us, but we also did want to have a place of our own. Now that we do, it is kind of weird because I don't see my mother every day, but in a certain sense our lives are more peaceful than they were in the past.

That would be a great thing to be able to do at times. I too sometimes wish that we could just pick up the house (with all of our belongings still in place) and move it to the lot of our dreams.

If god bless and give me a chance to alter my house,I prefer to install a air-condition because of it was so cold in winter and the most important one,my parents can't undergo so cold.We usually fire in the winter,it's perfect for all family talking about something funny around the fire.I'm sorry for not giving advice on how to make your kitchen or bathroom looks more comfortable and more useful. But with your lover, everywhere will be heaven.

Central heating and air is a very important thing for us to have in our house as it makes our lives inside the home very comfortable. When we bought our house we had central heating, but it didn't have central air, we just had window units. However, we were blessed to have won a new system from one of the local heating and air companies and it really has helped us to feel more comfortable in our own home.

the location! LOL, I currently live with two other students and my boyfriend. and so we live in this horribel house in which we can hear everything the other one saids and we share bathroom and kitchen which I find non-hygienic. I'm already searching for another appartment. Our toilet is separate from the bathroom and the bathroom is on the 2nd floor... the toilet on the 1st and my room on the 3rd... I often use a bucket because to go down 2 stairs to use the toilet is insane!!

You sound very attached to your house but not to the location of it. This would be a great thing to be able to do to your house. Thanks for sharing.

Our house was built in 1995 as a medium sized cape... in 07 we finished an addition that doubled our home. Every room was done... EXCEPT the kitchen! I would love to redo it; the cabinets, the countertops, the appliances... We did tile the floor and painted but it's still dated... IMO... Naturally, DH doesn't agree!

Kitchens are a lot of work and I'll definitely give it that, but it is also one of the single improvements that you can make to a house that will increase it's value almost immediately.

Hi Dorann :)
I live in an apartment, and it's spacious, but we cannot repaint the white walls into any different colors. I also wish we could plant things in the ground, but it all has to go into pots. I would definitely change the counter tops!
But, in this day and age, I am just grateful to have a clean and decent place to live. In my dreams, I would love to be a home-owner again...perhaps someday.

I'm blessed that I've never lived in an apartment, because I think plain white walls would drive me absolutely insane. But, you are right to be thankful that you do have a decent place to live.

I brought this house two in half years ago. I went from owning a house that was over 100 years old to this one that is only 20 year old. The selling point for me was the big kitchen and the big landscaped front and backyard. However, the one thing I would love to have done in my home are all the windows replaced with beautiful accents to them. That would make my home complete. However not having a job I'm afraid to spend the money in replacing them. Hopefully something will happen that will turn that around soon.

I hope that you are able to replace your windows in the near future. Not only is having replacement windows aesthetically pleasing, it is also very nice in increasing your energy efficiency in your home.

Hi dorannmwin, I must admit this I was too besotted with the drawing and dining and kitchen to have really been concerned about bathrooms. Now, I realize that there were things that I should have considered for example the exact slope and such things. Not much that I can do about it though for the moment. :( I get guests too frequently, and there are kids coming. I can only wait for the youngest one to grow a bit more, say another two years, before I take up bathroom repairs as well as painting. It is not bad though. Just a little bit less than satisfactory. :)

It's good that the things that you'd like to change are just cosmetic for the most part. You are also very smart to wait until the children are a bit older, it makes it that much easier.

For me, I would put more cabinets and I'd like a bigger bathroom and a separate dirty kitchen. I am a minimalist so I don't like cluttered stuff. I don't like to have much things lying around either so storage in of utmost importance. Part from that, with the bigger bathroom, that is so I can put more storage cabinets in as well. With the kitchen, it's just to keep things tidier because in my other home, we have a separate dirty kitchen from the one where we sit and dine in sometimes.

The separate kitchen is a very neat concept and you are definitely right, especially for people that live in older houses, additional closet space would be a very, very nice thing.

I will change the windows, I have 3 dogs outside that are criying on the night and I can't sleep. If the windows are a little bit bigger and better, I can sleep.

Replacement windows are great. Not only do they help to block out the outside sounds, they also help to lower your heating and air conditioning bills. This would be a great thing to have done to your house.

i rent so can't actually do anything, but if i was allowed to do something to it. i'd rip out a few walls and open the place up a bit more, instead of a hall way down the middle. down side is i'd lose a heap of storage space, but then i'd move where the front door is and put the linen cardboard there instead. then i might be able to get the air con down that there. i'd also knock 2 walls out in the bathroom, to make it one big room.
ave fun with the kitchen.

Honestly, that is another of the things that I really like about our house. All of the general living space in the house is all very open, the only doors on the first floor are into our bedroom, the bathroom and the office (because it is technically a bedroom by design. The living room, dining room and kitchen is all very open and easily accessible.

If I got to choose I would make the kitchen much bigger with more cabinets and more counter space. I cook a lot and I have a lot of spices and things and I have no space to put it all. I have one nice sized counter top but sometimes I would like to be bigger like when I bake. I would also love to have some sort of game room, but I would be more than happy with the bigger picture.

We don't have nearly enough counter space in our house, and for that reason, a lot of times when I am baking, I do the majority of the work at the dining room table because that is the one place where I feel like I have plenty of room to work.

We rent out house so there isn't anything major that we can change about it but there are many small things that we have done to improve what we can anyways. We have done a ton and ton of painting, when we first moved in we painted every room in the house. All of the rooms were a off white or white color and we wanted a little bit of color in here so we painted our living room a beige color, our kitchen and apple red, our downstairs bath is a medium blue, computer room is a darker blue, upstairs bath is a darker green and our bedroom is also blue. We left out kids room white but it is a fresh coat white and then we left them hang posters. I am thinking about painting their rooms but I want them to pick colors that they will be able to live with as teenagers as well so we don't have to repaint all the time when they grow out of that certain color.
If I could change anything about this house it would probably be some good siding, it has that old tile type siding and there are spots that have fallen off and even though it doesn't look to bad with the few small pieces that have fallen off I think it would look great with new upgraded siding. I would also like a new kitchen floor but that is something that hubby and I can handle we just need to find the time and money to get it done, it has linoleum down in it and I would like something else I am stuck between black and white tiling or imitation wooden floors and I would like it to flow on through into the downstairs bathroom that is right off of the kitchen. Oh and yea I would like a new upgraded stove and some more cupboards....no I don't want much at all LOL...

I sympathize with you completely. Granted, I brought up the kitchen in our house, but there really are other things that I want to change about it as well. I really do want to put vinyl siding on the house at some point in the future because I think it would be more aesthetically pleasing and I also think it would add to the value of the house, as well as serving as an additional layer of insulation. I'd like to add another bathroom to the upstairs, oh, and I want to landscape the front yard.
I guess all of those things are what you get when you buy a project house.

if i could change one thing about my house it would be the floor. it makes noises when i step on it and its so annoying. but the up side about this is since its so loud i can hear when my baby brother or sister are up there. and their not suppose to be. but another bad thing about the floor is it makes me scared that it might fall. are house is like sooo old. the windows have string on them on the side so they can stay up this house was made in the 1900's so its cool but yet it isn't it needs alot of upgrades. just like your house. and so i think the floor is gonna fall thats what scares me about those noisy stairs, and floors.

My grandmother's house had a place in the upstairs that sounds very similar to what you are describing about the floor of your house. In fact, we were afraid to step in that one spot and if we did, we would just cringe because there were times that we felt like we were going to fall through the floor. Thankfully it never happened, but I can definitely sympathize with what you are saying.

This is a great question! I just moved into a new place myself! It's a tiny little condo and does need a lot of work. There are four of us living in this tiny little 2 bedroom place. My boyfriend and I, his aunt and his terminal grandmother. There's only one bathroom, and the toilet is separate from the rest of the bathroom (that is kind of nice, but the door hits the toilet, so there's barely any room). The office has to be combined with the living room, so there are 2 desks out there along with several book shelves filled to the brim with books. The kitchen/dining room is outdated and small.
My boyfriend's family is old fashioned, so they won't let us share a room, which just made things more complicated than anything else, because now the living room is also a bedroom.
Ultimately, I think I'd add a bedroom onto the house. Having one bathroom isn't terrible, and we've managed to find enough storage for everything in the kitchen. I'd choose to add another bedroom if not an apartment type thing onto the side of the house for my boyfriend and I. His grandma is sleeping in the living room and needs her own space, even if she says she doesn't want it. His aunt is a light sleeper and I make a lot of noise when I sleep, so us sharing a room doesn't work out as well as they'd hoped. Everyone needs their own space here.

It does definitely sound like you need more space in your life. It is really weird with the bathroom situations. Some people think that it is absolutely a necessity to have more than one bathroom in a home, but we've only ever had one bathroom and we've been able to get by with it. Sounds like you are too.
