First snow

It's snowing, first snow of the season at our house. I just love the look of it, the big flakes falling just like leaves from the sky. We may not get enough to cover the ground, most of the time we don't but just the sight of it is very peaceful for me and I love the way it muffles all sound outside. o you enjoy the snow? How much do you get?

I will never, ever forget my first view of snow at night, lit by a street lamp. It took my breath away...it sparkled!! Such a magical sight! And you can't see that in photographs. It was so beautiful, & I'd never known. It still gives me chills of joy when I remember it! Maggiepie "WHERE'S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE?"

When I was a teen a group of us use to go for a walk on the first snowy night just to see the snow fall in the street lamps. Of course those were safer times and we lived in a small desert town. Your response brought that all back to me. Thanks

I was in Summerville (ironic, no? ), Pennsylvania when I saw that. You're welcome to share my memory; it's one of my favorite ones, among countless others! Glad it brought back one of yours. Maggiepie "WHERE'S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE?"

Oh, how I envy you your 1st snow. I love it, and I am still waiting for ours. So peaceful, just as you said. I live in MI, and we get a lot of lake effect snows most winters, as well as a good blizzard or two. Sometimes 4", sometimes 12 or more...it varies. It's fine if it melts, but we've had a few winters that I can remember where it just kept accumulating all winter, and the ground was covered from November to late March. But then, I'm hungry for spring :) Karen

The first snow we had this year was the week before Halloween and I measured 9 inches in the back yard. Hello, winter! It's snowing lightly right now but hardly nothing on the ground and they're not expecting much out of it. I think it's going to be one of those years.

I have a friend who said back home for her (Colorado) they had tons of snow. We had maybe ten flakes.

It varies from year to year. I love snow if I do not have to go out in it. Last March we had a lot, but I had to go out in it, so it was not my favorite. I can hear and feel the muffling effect right now, Pat, thanks for the mental picture.

Unless there was a blizzard, I loved to go out in the snow--even when not dressed for it. This was partly because the mountains in Western Pennsylvanis blocked off the wind, so I could stay out a long time--in shorts!--before I got too cold. No "wind chill factor!" I just moved back to Texas this summer, from Pennsylvania. I always loved the first snowfall of the season. Waking up to a winter wonderland all covered in white. I'll miss that, the first snow that is.......however, I won't miss the days of being snowed in, or the snow shovel, I did my fair share in the 4 years I was there! lol We do get one or two snowdays here, but usually it's gone by that afternoon or the next day.

You've just made me homesick for Pa! I used to live near Johnstown, & that's really where I first saw snow! I've never stopped missing it, & I've been in my share of blizzards, too! Maggiepie "WHERE'S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE?"

We just moved from Florida to Pennsylvania and I noticed there were little flags on top of every fire hydrant. When I asked my son why the flags were there, he answered, "So firemen can find the hydrants in the snow!" Yikes! So, although we have no snow yet, I have a feeling we just might get a bit more than flurries. Sure makes me want to be back in my real home of Florida, but we are stuck here pretty much for the rest of our lives.

You will get use to it. You will learn to dress differently and to carry a saftey kit in the car in case you get stuck and have to stay in your car for a long time. The most wonderful thing we have found are hand warmers, both of us are older and have trouble with hands and feet that get cold. We also have special scoks that heat up. The problem where you have a lot of snow is that it gets very dirty and icy quickly. That is why I love living where it never lasts more than a week at a time.

I amso sorry you have so much to cope with. When things get really bad, remember to take some deep breaths and look hard for the positive energy, it's there. When overpowered emotionally I have found tapping to be of great help. Tapping.com has a great video that has helped me. It's free.

I live in Maryland over thirty years prior to moving to Florida. I never got used to the cold, snow, ice and overall terrible winter weather. Now with a disabled husband to care for, snow poses a real threat in his health care. But I'm taking you up on some good suggestions for the 'just in case we get caught out in it.' Thank you and many hugs.

Whut's snow? :-) Our first winter here, it came low enough that we could see it on the hills behind us. That's as close as we've gotten to snow here so far. When I lived in LA, one winter it did actually snow down in the valley and stick for part of the day, but that is a very rare event.

When I lived near LA I lived out in the desert and about every five years we had heavy snow that closed the school and the roads. It was still very beautiful.

I had a friend who commuted in from Agua Dulce and she had to contend with snow most winters. Also people who came in from Palmdale, Lancaster, etc.

In Austin Texas, snow is rare, & generally doesn't last more than a day-if that long. I wish I could live where it snows every winter. I used to, & I miss it so much! I know, some folks hate to shovel it, & truthfully, I'm no longer able, myself. Still, I have enough sense to stock up on necessities, & be extra careful so I won't need an ambulance. I'd welcome being snowbound if I had a good generator, a warm house, & all the books & food I'd need! Oh, & MyBot! Maggiepie "WHERE'S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE?"

Hi Pat. I decided I've been away too long. Hope all is well with you. I left Philadelphia because of the snow. I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing the first snowfall in over twenty years. I know that sounds a bit contradictory. I think the first snowfall is fabulous and beyond those few hours, I hate it!

Kathy I was just looking at my friends lists and you were one of my first, I was wondering why we hadn't heard from you for a while. Glad you are still around. I am fine.

Hey pat! Congrats on your first snowfall! You sure beat us! We have been having the weirdest temps ever! Up and down and rain and the temps have been going between the 50's during the day and the 30's at night so we are getting rain instead of snow so far! I hope you are enjoying your first snow! I just love to watch the snow falling from the sky! It is just so amazing and beautiful to watch even if it doesn't stick when it hits the ground! I am kind of looking forward to our "first"! I think it will be soon, but in NY you just never know!

I am very jealous of you right now, after reading your post. I wish we had our first snow already! I love the snow, but where I am at we only get a few inches a year, and it usually comes in January, so I might have some time to wait...

I am glad that you live in a place where you can get to the snow, often visiting snow is much easier than living in it. Enjoy

We haven't had any snow yet, it will be in the low to mid 50's daytime temps this next week. I'm looking forward to the snow! Like you, I love watching it fall and I feel a sense of overwhelming awe when I go outside at night after a fresh snowfall and feel the soft silence and look up at the brilliant stars that are like jewels in the sky. Winter is a magical time for me--it certainly limits my travel but its beauty more than makes up for it. The birds come to feed when it snows, too!
