why does everyone fear snakes?

i have noticed many people really fear snakes i understand that an amount of caution and respect for them is important but to outright fear them is odd to me. one thought i had at least as far as the Christian community is concerned is maybe something to do with the serpent luring eve to eat the apple for that maybe hate is understandable but once again would it be a reason people fear them? in my experience with snakes they are very gentle and do not wish malice of any kind unless they feel they are in danger or they are looking at a food item. so if you do fear snakes do you know why? and for those who do not fear them do you have a theory that you would like to put out there?

Well, I'm not afraid a snake would come and tempt me with an apple and I dont think that'll happen in my entire life time. Okay, I kid.
I dont think it has so much to do with that belief but I do think that people fear what they don't really understand sometimes. We know that snakes can be dangerous with poisons and what not but most do not understand the behavior of snakes. It is the same as I would put it, as piranhas.
We know piranhas can rip your flesh but most people dont know that they wont do it unless you're bleeding. The blood drives them into a frenzy and thats when they attack.

I Christian religion, snake was portrayed as the devil. Its was manifested in almost all the Books of the Bible from the Old Testament down the the New Testament. Genesis, portrays the devil as a snake in the Garden of Eden, while this "old snake" again appeared in the book of Revelations. But many groups portrays the underside. In medicine for example, the snake is the main feature on its banner. I do hate snakes too, but as most wild animals do, they only reacted on their survival instinct if they knew that they are endangered. They are really fascinating creatures and loved to see them on NGC, Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.

i am glad that though you fear them you can find them fascinating. i find all snakes fascinating actually i was once bitten by a reticulated python i did not feel any fear and it immediately let go leaving no damage except a few needle sized holes that only bled a drop or two between them. it was an interesting experience and nothing else.

I don't know many people that are afraid to touch non-poisonous snakes. Women are afraid to touch a lot of animals and insects. I bet they would rather touch a snake than a maggot though. Snakes and maggots just aren't cuddly creatures. Snakes look kind of cold and menacing. Most animal lovers know they aren't but that is the impression most people get from them.

I think that many people have fear of snakes because they don't know enough about snakes. Some snakes can be harmless. There are some that can kill you. Danger always lurks when involved with snakes. Caution needs to be used when snakes are in your path . that's for sure.

you know it is very simple to tell a dangerous snake from a harmless one the easiest is that they have differently shaped heads because a venomous snake needs a bigger head for room for the poison sacks therefore they usually have very fat jaws compared to their body. and yes respect is good but fear is more likely to get you in trouble with one than respect.

Generally, we fear snakes because we think they are all poisonous and once we are bitten we will die. But, I saw a documentary film about snakes and only those poisonous ones live in the desert or the jungle. If we are scared of snakes, did you know that they are more scared of us? That's the reason they slither away immediately when they encounter people. Unless you will hurt them, of course, they will strike back. That's their survival instinct working.

Hello everyone,
I belong to a part of the world where the most poisonous snakes are found...And thats King Cobra and I belong to India...I dont know if anyone has seen a King Cobra in the most aggressive form of its or not,but I have faced once. Its like there is a playground here in my locality which has got swampy marshes at the back...SO we were playing football and I went to retrieve the ball from the swamps..As i went near I suddenly saw this giant serpent...I guess the ball had hit it and it was furious. The hood was upright and it was such a beautiful one, with lovely patterns...It was 10 mts away from me.....The snake was almost 12 to 14 feet, and some are even longer.....THe body was thick and fleshy but the site was horrible.....I slowly backed off the mud and then ran for my life.....It didn't runa fter me,infact cobra's generally dont do that....But still I have had nightmares about it...
I dont mind saying that I fear snakes like hell...And i dont want to find out why....THe picture is still fresh in my mind......And i always keep a safe distance from all type of snakes.....

i think king cobras are just beautiful and yes they can get very big we actually have wild ones here in america down in places like florida because of imported ones that have gotten free. and yea if something hit you in the head and you didn't know any better wouldn't you be angry too? or maybe fear for your life? they don't chase because they do not want to hurt you they just want to be left alone to live their life in peace.

Well snakes are poisonous and the way they slither on the ground and strike at the slightest of provocations and their motionless ‘stare’ does scare people away. I would be scared if I saw a snake on the ground before me. Also people have not really studied snakes in general or they are not found regularly in the domestic areas so they have an aura of mystery and myth around them. The Bible also curses the snake right at the beginning and I think people have always associated the snake with evil.

I think it is chiefly because of snakes' horrifying looks. Just imagine a snake in your mind. Long, curving, out-stretched tongue, creeping etc. It makes me come out in goose flesh merely thinking of a snake. There used to be a few snakes around my family in summer as my parents live in countryside. Whenever it is too hot, the snakes come out, crawling somewhere. I was almost frightened out of my wits one time I saw it. Though some of them are poisonless, they still frighten people.

see the problem here is when i imagine a snake i do not imagine it as a menace i think of an animal who has amazing flexibility and the tongue is how they smell so its lust like a dog sniffing your hand you do not know if an unfamiliar dog will bite and they are really more likely to than a snake who would rather avoid you all together.

there are very few species of snakes that can kill that fast and few of them are very likely to bite rather than slither away as fast as they can. and as far as touching one you really should try it sometime with a boa or python of some sort their skin is as smooth and soft as the finest silk.

This has purely to do with the way that people portray snakes from the media. They can be dangerous to people and we are afraid of things that may pose a threat to us. On the otherhand, I think that there is an issue with texture and "slimy" animals which make people afraid of them.

does the media say all dogs are dangerous? did you know that labradors the "family" dogs are reported in the top three of reported dog bite breeds? media is really stupid.

I think the Adam and Eve theory could have a lot to do with it, but I think that people are afraid of snakes more because of the things they hear from the media. They hear all kinds of horror stories on TV about the deadly snakes and how they kill people blah blah blah. Well, yes, people should be wary of venomous snakes and fear definitely makes people wary. But outright fear of all snakes is ridiculous, you're right. I personally love snakes. They're beautiful creatures and incredibly graceful for what they're given. So I blame the media for all the people afraid of the beautiful and virtually harmless snakes.

I would say snakes are something most people would naturally fear. Its based on the fear of getting bit. I'm a bit frightened by them as well. Even if they're non poisonous, they seem like they wanna kill me lmao.

i dont understand how a snakes skin is stupid but they do not have ugly faces and their tongue is their sense of smell it wouldn't be as useful if it was not forked would your nose work as well if it had only one part? the answer is no it wouldn't. snakes are by no means the most dangerous animal and very few of them actually pose any threat to anyone bigger than a mouse. and yes there would be an imbalance without them so if you really want to stay away from them live in the air or somewhere very cold as they cannot live in cold places.

hmmm...yes, i would also agree of the Christian basis that snakes are symbols of betrayal and sin.
lest, i think most people are afraid of snakes because of the societal influences that we have. as we know that family is the basic unit of the community, we start our understanding about life from our homes and we were thought by our parents when we were kids with the kinds of animals and their sounds. and as kids, we are very much curious of how it looks like, for us to imagine further why it sounded like that. moreover, out of curiosity that we have we wanted to ask questions about it like the dog, the best description to it is "man's best friend" and the most answers we get about snake is that it is a very dangerous creature because it can kill you when you are bitten. because of such simple and concise answer from the elderly, we now fear snakes. however, i have seen in one video at the youtube i think that was in India, wherein snakes are friends of a toddler or the a snake was just beside the baby..'twas kinda scary for but the parents themselves where the ones who let the snake draw near to the infant child. so i think it is in the upbringing... the more we scare the little kids, they will definitely carry that through their older days.

you know that is a very good idea i would have never thought of that as a reason why. i don't know if it is still practiced today but i know there are some people who sew cobras jaws together for the purpose of being a snake charmer or otherwise similar occupation or purpose. but when they don't feel threatened a snake is a very gentle animal.

I think it depends on the type of snake too. I fear copperhead snakes. Where I live it is possible to come across one and if you look up the pictures of what can happen when bit by one it is scary. I think the idea of being bit by one scares people too. I'm sure some snakes can be gentle but the idea of one striking at you suddenly is a little scary.

yes copperheads and timber rattlers are fairly common where i live and it is a worry that they may appear suddenly because they hide and blend in very well but i am not afraid of them i would just make sure i keep my distance and also remove the snake if it is necessary as i know how to handle them i think it a very good thing to learn for anyone.

Snakes are slimy, and some people do not like slimy animals in general. Also some snakes are poisonous. Not all snakes are, I know, but I think it's better to be safe than sorry.

snakes are not and never have been slimy unless you slather them with lube which i hope you don't. they are very dry and smooth like fine silk. and its very easy to tell poisonous snakes from non poisonous snakes on page two i describe one very simple way.

I'm not afraid of snakes, except the poisonous ones. I don't imagine anyone would be cool as a cucumber when facing a poisonous snake ready to strike. I think garden snakes are cute though!

i can understand a fear of the poison of snakes but there are other things with much more dangerous poison and also humans themselves are still more dangerous to each other with man made poisons.
