i am not good in english. it is not my first language. there are still lots of words that i need to check for its meaning in the dictionary. i just search it out online though as using the book could be quite a hassle as the books are quite big and heavy and looking flipping the pages can be quite slow and hard. and so i prefer to search it online.
Anyways, i do search for some meanings and its usage. sometimes i know the meaning of the word but then again i feel that i am not that sure that i really need to check it to make sure that i still remember correctly its meaning.

I have been using dictionaries from the age of 10 and still continue to use them. In those days it used to be the Oxford dictionary that used to be my guide. These days I depend more on the library provided with MS Office and online dictionaries. Of course, they have a strong bias to American English rather than British English which I generally prefer, but that still works fine for me.
Cheers!

During my school days we used to have a competition held by one of the chocolate manufacturers. In that they used to give a few letters of the alphabet and you were given a minute. They used to give chocolate gift hampers to students who used to form maximum words in a minute. So we used to really look forward to that event. For that we used to refer the dictionaries.
Cheers!

wow that event sounds really fun, exciting and mouth watering and delicious. yeah i remember we had this teacher who gives one piece of kisses chocolate for the ones that performs well in spelling. but usually the teacher has problem to keep up with her promise to give chocolates because it is quite expensive here to buy chocolates and the salary of the teacher is really just enough for them to buy basic things. but it was fun when one time she was able to give some few chocolates.

I still use it alot because where I live now I still don't understand the language that much. Besides that I carry my eng-jap dictionary all the time with me because I'm learning and when I get stuck with a word in my head while I'm on the bus or train I pull it out and read it.

yeah from time to time i tend to forget the spelling of some familiar words. sometimes when we taught we are pretty sure with the spelling that we get surprised to find that we still don't know the correct spelling of the word. many times i still forget the spelling of the same word that i often misspelled so many times.

I use the dictionary still when I couldn't understand certain words or when I am writing something and wanted to find a synonym for a certain word and I have to make sure that it has the same meaning. It also helps to have it for words that I am not sure how to spell.

English is my first language, but that doesn't mean that I don't have to reach for the dictionary every now and then... Mostly just to check that I'm not likely to make a complete t*t of myself by using some archaic word incorrectly!
I don't think anyone should ever consider that they've "learnt" a languge. My partner teaches English and is forever surprising me with middle English nonsense; presently, I have to take her word for it that the word actually exists. But if I had a dictionary...

what do you mean by middle English nonsense. anyways, yeah having a language as your first language doesn't mean that you know all the words already. even in my own local language. there are still some words i am not familiar with. but we dont' usually buy dictionary in our language. we only mostly buy dictionary in english language.

I use a dictionary quite often. It is an invaluable tool for those of us who write for a living. I write all sorts of things and I like to use words in manners that may not be considered commonly. It makes my writing more lively and interesting. I like to have a big dictionary on my desk, it helps.

Hey there, yes i use online dictionary from time to time, what is your first language? I also use the synonym feature in microsoft word when i do not have the time to look it up online, I know it's less accurate but it gives me a general idea of the word. Goodluck

hey there, yeah we do have the same first language and yes we do live in the same country, haha. Well since my father is European, i needed to learn french and tagalog at the same time. So it is kind of difficult. Oh the microsoft word synonym is just like any other synonym online except it is a lot faster but less accurate. A real dictionary you mean why like a book?

tagalog is my first language like you. we are both from same country. anyways, i don't know about the synonym feature in microsoft word as i rarely use it . before i find it a hassle to go online. but since i got introduced to dictionary.com website i find it more easy to get the meaning on this site. so since i am always online i just search it here. i am quite happy actually using this site. very helpful to me. but if i want a more detailed meaning and more accurate meaning i will look for a real dictionary.

yeah a real dictionary like the book. but our dictionary though in our home does not have that good or accurate meaning to it. so i don't like using it besides it is quite old. it was a very old version bought when i was not yet started schooling
anyways, so your father is french. so do you speak french too. it is really interesting that you are half french. anyways, it is cool to have or know more than one language.

I still use dictionary, whenever i came across a difficult word. As for me, i will use both kind of dictionary, depending on my situation. If i am doing my offline job and not in front of the computer, then i will look-up that difficult word in my big book dictionary. But, if i happened to be online on that moment, then i will search online for that difficult word. Anyway, it's good to use dictionary most of the time to upgrade your knowledge especially on that certain language which is not your main language.

Yes sometimes but sometimes I get lazy to look the word that unfamiliar to me on the dictionary. Sometimes I just guessing but most of the time I look it also on the dictionary or find the meaning online. If I don't know the translation of Tagalog word to English I often consult my English-Tagalog dictionary.

Dear hotsummer,
I do refer to dictionary quite often for new and strange words.
At times for writing slogan, I need to find words that have same rhythm etc.
Sometimes, my son will teach me to check on wikipedia or online dictionary.
I still prefer to do it manually on the thick dictionary. We will challenge
each other to see who can find the meaning faster Sometimes he
wins, and sometimes I am faster.

I don't use dictionary anymore, i just type the words and look for the meaning on the internet cause that's very convenient. So if i need to look for a meaning of a word, i just say "i goggled it" instead of "i look at the dictionary". Using the internet is much faster unlike using the dictionary book, i don't have to search the book page by page all i have to do is type it.

Yes, I still use dictionary from time to time, especially for words that are unfamiliar to me. When I first worked as secretary at the age of 18, I had always met new words being written by my lawyer bosses for legal documents that they prepared. When I was in that occasion, I always had the dictionary handy for the purpose. I had always "asked for its help" and checked what a particular word means. There were also times that I was requested to compose letters or make replies to letters and I always sought the help of "mr. dictionary" who was always by my side. I developed a relationship with "him" from that time on and we are still going strong and have never ever, for an instance, thought of leaving "him". hahahaha

To answer your question, yes, I still refer to the dictionary from time to time.
However, thanks to the auto-spell feature available nowadays, whenever I'm typing up a document on the computer, I find the dictionary absolutely useless (unless of course, it's such an outlandish word that even the auto-spell isn't aware of what it is).
Whenever I'm writing a document by hand (very rarely), I will either use a hard copy of the dictionary or, if there is a computer with internet access nearby, a virtual copy of the dictionary (dictionary.com).
Mainly, I use the dictionary by opening up random pages and searching for any words that could benefit my writing in the future, or words that sound intelligent.

..Hi hotsummer, My dictionary is always close by when I am writing, because I hate having misspelled words in my work. I have spell check, hut even then, when
I look at the word and it is underlined in red, I can't always spell the word correctly because I may mispronounce it or there are silent letters. So the trusty dictionary is my good friend. Sometimes I also will use a word that I think means one thing, I look it up and wrong, it means something else all together. Take it easy

That's nice that you get confused of some English words, and you check them in internet for verification. but be careful on searching the net, because there are some website that is not true of what they are talking about. Well dictionary is always in my bag wherever i go. I need it, every time. Specially in the class, and before i go to bed i read some words and it's meaning. And sometimes it's really hard for them to remember. But if you get used to it. It will be easy.

O yes! IT is my favourite pastime. It is to check the meaning of a word or to make sure that I am using the appropriate word in my articles. It is also to check spelling and grammar, phonetics, idioms, antonyms and synonyms.

I always use the dictionary from time to time. A thesaurus is very useful as well. When I hear a word on the news and do not know exactly what it is I will look it up in a heartbeat. I always want to expand my vocabulary.
