Are you a member of a gym? Do you prefer this to exercising at home?

I have come from a place where I never used to exercise and I actually found it really boring! However, we are learning so much more nowadays on how important it is to remain fit and exercise regularly. When I first started exercising I did actually join a gym, that's when I was working and it was expensive. I joined Holmes Place, that group of gymnasiums and it cost me around £30 per month. On reflection though I realise that I didn't feel very comfortable there, I'm quite self-concious. So, I left the gym and purchased a whole set of home exercise equipment and I feel so much better for having done this. I don't know if you know that shopping channel Best Direct? Well, I bought three exercise machines from there and everything is fine. I exercise three times per week and there's no one watching, this is a private thing! What suits you? Are you a member of a gym? Or do you prefer home exercise equipment? My flat is a gym now as I have an exercise machine in every room! Share your thoughts on this one! Andrew

I think you have made a good point, consistency pays off, and equipment is not necessary. People were healthy long before there were gyms and equipment. They just worked hard.

Hi ronny, that's great! If you don't need the equipment and it works for you that's terrific. I tried push ups once upon a time but I found them quite hard. Still, I'm very pleased with the equipment that I have and I hope that I never have to replace the machines and that they last forever. After exercising you feel so good inside and I'm pretty sure it does wonders for things like depression which I have experienced in the past. Andrew

I have a YMCA membership, do not use it. I have home exercise equipment, and do not use it.The advantage to the Y is that there is a pool, sauna and hot tub for me to not use as well as equipment and classes. I need to get busy with something, though.

I could stop on my way to or from work. I am in a small town and gas is not a prohibiting factor, just inertia.

I would love to return to the swimming pool but you can only do so much I think. I used to swim on a regular basis and I really enjoyed it. My main exercise probably has to be cycling, getting out there and breathing the fresh air, very nice! When I'm making meals in my kitchen I have to dance around my equipment in order to access the living room! I don't mind, I would much rather be cramped and have exercise equipment than have lots of space and no exercise equipment! Andrew

You make a great point about the gym having a pool, Gerty. I would love to be able to go swimming in the winter, but I do not think that it is worth the cost of the gym membership and gas to do it, especially since we do not have the extra money. I do love swimming in my parents' pool in the summertime, though, and it is fantastic exercise.

No I am not a member of a gym and I have never been a member of a gym. I do not exercise at home either I just exercise by walking. I have read that walking is almost as good as exercising. I prefer to just exercise by walking it is not as hard to do as different machines and exercises that people do to stay healthy.

Well, walking is certainly the simplest form of exercising and it's good that you favour this type of exercise. I don't favour walking myself but I guess I'm doing a form of walking when it comes to exercising on one of my machines! There are times when I become bogged down with exercise completely and I tend to stop for a while. This doesn't last for long though and I immediately return to exercising on a regular basis. Andrew

Hello AndrewFreyne this is checkmail and earlier often did regularly was going to gymnasium for performing excises, but later as studies increased and joined part time jobs. The time was not avail for me to be in gym for exercises. So i just keep on exercising some of the bodyweight excersis which are easy and simple.Yeah i know the technique of doing it properly, so am reaping in the benefits of the exercises without gym. Also plan to join gym in the near future to ton up my muscles if time is avail again.

Hello checkmail. Well, as you become busier I suppose it becomes that much more difficult. I like the fact of having home exercise equipment as I can exercise on them whenever I want for however long I want. My machines seem to be working for me and I'm really pleased with them. I also love cycling and this is a fantastic form of exercise. I would love to swim as well but I don't have the income for that and things are very difficult financially. Thanks for your thoughts. most people i know who have purchased gym equipment have done so because, they want to be able to do those exercises whenever they have free time.
yes, it is highly advantageous to purchase one's own units of equipment when the main reason for doing so is something like this. it can never be discounted that gyms have opening and closing times.
then again, there are some gyms which will make one choose the time when he would be using the facilities. and, the bad thing is, one cannot use the gym facilities at those times which do not fall within the time so specified in the membership card.

Hi Andrew,
That's great! I was a member of a club/gym before but, got tired and lazy going there and doing my exercise. Same with you, I am not comfortable and a bit self-concious in doing my exercise in the gym. Right now, I just do my exercise at home and I run or jog at the park which cost me nothing. I have a VCD instructions of home exercises that are easy to follow and I can do it everytime I feel like doing it. I would also love to have exercise machines but it seems expensive. (I need a sponsor! hahaha) But I have skipping rope, exercise mat and a bike so I'm good with it. Nice topic! :) Happy Lotting!

Yes, I love the fact that I can now exercise within the privacy of my own home and I feel really good inside. There's hardly any space to move but I don't mind this, I think that health is very important and should be taken seriously. I sometimes stick on some positive upbeat music whilst I am exercising and this really helps in relation to performance and endurance! It's almost like being in a gym when you have the music blaring away! I'm not that keen on jogging, I've never tried really! Home exercise machines can be expensive but once you have bought them you have them for a life time! Good luck with your exercising. Andrew

I'm a member of a gym but i do work out at home. I will go running at the high school track or i will go walk around town. I do my situps and push ups at home. Working out is very boring it kill me sometime to get up and go but i manage to crawl out of the house and get to the gym. It will pay off in the end.

There have been times when I have become bored with exercising and I have then taken a short break from it. I think it's ok to take a break away from exercise when you don't feel up to it. When my mind is right I return to exercise and I feel better about it. That's life I suppose, full of ups and downs. Andrew

exercising in a gym has its own advantages. i used to be a member of a local gym. simply because it was so accessible from where we used to live. the fee
was also minimal and the gym instructors are truly cordial.
it is good to be exercising in a gym because, the exercises that i had was properly supervised in order for me to achieve that which i have been aiming for. also, time and again, i am reminded by the gym instructors about those unwinding exercises that i have to do from time to time.

Well, it's good if you can find a gym like you mention with all those good things! I don't think that I will ever become a member of a gym again, not unless my finances improve significantly! Still, I really enjoy exercising withing the comfort of my own home. Together with the music it makes a nice experience! Andrew

No I am not member of a gym. Well, I was, but the first one dropped or lost my lifetime membership with whatever reason they may have. Second, they kept on charging my credit card like an auto-enrollment. Plus, you have to pay extra if you want an instructor to teach you. What a bummer! That's why now we moved to a house that has ammenities like gym, pool, etc. With this, I can go to the gym regularly without leaving home. So I kinda combined the two. Lol.

I don't like the idea of expensive gym fees! I'm really comfortable with exercising within the privacy of my own home. The only thing I lack by doing my exercise this way is I don't have the benefit of advice from a gym instructor or something. I have been exercising for so long that I'm not worried about this now. I don't feel any major aches or pains so I'm thinking that I must be doing something right! I really miss the swimming pool though. Once upon a time I used to swim on a regular basis. Will I ever return to the swimming pool? I'm not sure, I hope so but I need a significant increase in finance for this to take place! Andrew

It is fun to exercise at home. You can watch TV or listen to your music while exercising. Also one does not have to travel. Also you have privacy. The only disadvantage is that some of the equipments at the gym is very costly to be used at home.

I tend to use all three pieces of equipment and they are strong and sturdy, I hope to have them for many years to come. When you exercise you feel so good and I'm pretty sure it helps you to walk down the path of longevity! Andrew

Well, I try!. It's good to do something that works for you! I love exercising to music as I find that it really helps me in pushing myself and getting the best workout possible. Now that we are talking about this I realise I have to do some exercise today so it's back on to the machines! Thanks for your thoughts. Andrew

I'm not a member of a gym anymore, nowadays I prefer to have an active lifestyle for example going for walks, the beach etc.
But I did go for a long time and it's not as boring these days as it used to be. Theres something for everyone, from dance workouts to kickboxing, aerobics, yoga to your own personalised workouts.
Not to mention it's a great social things to be out there with like minded people motivating each other.
I also think it depends what gym you go to, there's one gym here thats very expensive and the women there at 6am are dressed up with make-up but other gyms are much more laid back.
However working out at home is great because you can do it pretty much whenever you want as well as teh privacy aspect.

Well, there's definitely the social aspect of being in a gym! That's something I wouldn't mind but I'm not keen on being gazed upon as I exercise! I love the equipment that I have within my own home, it has done wonders for me so far! Aside from exercising within my flat I also love to cycle on a regular basis and this keeps me happy and content I guess! There's real freedom with that activity! Andrew

I prefer to do exercise the cheap, effective and easy way. I jog and walk 3 times a week in a park for years and it helps me to maintain my health. I never join a gym before in my life . A lot of my friends who joined it usually quit...hehehe..maybe they lack of discipline or will power.

Yes, when I joined a gym once upon a time I quit too! It's very expensive and there are so many ways in which you can exercise and it hardly costs you anything. I love the idea of home exercise equipment and I look after the machines that I have and they seem to be working for me. I have never tried jogging or walking for that matter but I suppose they are good forms of exercise in themselves. Andrew

I joined a gym few months ago and I only went there 3 times for swimming then stopped. I like execising, but I am a lazy one.I thought if I payed to exercise, I would go exercising regularly for the money. I was wrong. I just didn't like being watched. I don't like exercise @ home either. Even family's watching is not okay for me. So I choose to go jogging @ the park.

Well, it's good that you do something that works for you. I don't like being watched either which is why I'm not a member of a gym now. I'm a very private person when it comes to things like that. I'm pleased with the exercise equipment that I have within my flat. The machines that I have cover all areas of exercise like strength, aerobic and endurance, I don't need anything else really. I would love to return to the swimming pool but it's quite expensive and I'm not going to get into the story of finance! Andrew Welcome to My Lot by the way.

I wanted to start with a good exercise program. Its either in a gym or perhaps I will do it on my own. Though as of this moment I have not started yet since I am quite busy with my work. Hopefully I will be able to set my schedules well. I would prefer to do it on my own but the thing is I need to know the right way to do it. So maybe I will try to find out first the different techniques as I start out.

Well, that's good that are going through the planning stage of starting out. For someone like yourself who may be quite busy with work and everything it sometimes makes a difference when you have home exercise equipment as you can do as much or as little exercise as you wish. It's always nice to receive some advice though before starting out. Good luck and I hope you get something arranged. Andrew

I do not really like going to the gym. I would much rather workout at home. I have my own universal, weights and other exercise equipment, and it is much more convenient to be able to workout whenever I have free time rather than trying to get to a gym. Plus, I don't waste money on gas going to and from a gym, let alone the cost of membership, which as you said is very expensive.
I know other people, though, that love going to the gym, because they are more motivated and push themselves harder when other people are around. They also have the benefit of trainers that can help them and show them the proper way to use a machine or what exercises will be more effective at targeting certain areas of the body. They can ask questions and get feedback from knowledgeable people, and that works better for them.
I think that it is all about personal preference and comfort. Some people do better one way, and other people do better a different way. I think that as long as you are focused on being healthy and staying fit, though, that is the most important part. I am with you, however, and definitely feel more comfortable working out in the privacy of my own home.

Home exercise equipment has come a long way over the years, they're becoming more sturdier and well built. The machines that I mainly have focus on aerobic exercise, I really like the idea of endurance and stamina! I wish I had the finance to pay for a personal trainer and receive sound advice and encouragement but I tend to rely of coaching tapes now which help to keep me motivated. As well as exercising within the home I also love to keep fit by cycling on a regular basis, this gives me so much pleasure and freedom. If ever there's a significant change in relation to finance then I may experiment and perhaps join a gym later otherwise I'm very content in relation to exercising at home. Andrew

I have a gym membership and I prefer to work out in the gym because seeing other people motivates me. At home, yes, it's more comfortable, but I feel like I push myself harder when I'm at the gym. There are no distractions and everyone is focused on getting in shape. At home, sometimes it's too comfortable and there are other things to do around so I get distracted.

Yes, there is the possibility of becoming distracted whilst exercising at home but I avoid this by listening to some really positive music whilst exercising and this helps me to push myself that much further. I guess there will definitely be a positive atmosphere in a gym environment and if my finance improves then I may consider joining a gym later. I'm very happy with the setup I have at home though and it definitely works for me. I stick to exercising three times weekly and I feel so good as a result. Andrew

I have never been a mamaber of any gyms. In my eyes, compared with exercising at home, it is a waste of money indeed.
I have similar experience with you. When I started exercising for the first time, I chose a gym near my home. Although their equipments are complete, I have to say that it was so expensive indeed. Then, after one month, I didn't continue exercising in the gym. Instead, I purchased some home exercise equipments and do exercise at home, which is more convenient and simple.
For the long run, home exercise equipments are more economic and convenient.

That's great! I like the idea of exercising at home and you can do it when you want and there's no one to bother you either. That's a nice picture of your home exercise equipment. The only thing I don't do in relation to exercise is swim and I really would like to do this. There's a local pool fairly nearby but again, it's all down to money isn't it! That's life. The three pieces of exercise equipment that I have in my flat are the Totalgym xli, the Gazelle Freestyle xl and the Ablounge xl, they're all sturdy pieces of equipment and I'm really pleased with them. I'm hoping that they will last me many years. I do feel good inside as a result of the regular exercise. Andrew

it was really nice to be concious when it comes to your health but me i prefer to exercise at home but last 3years i used to go every morning in gym but when i got busy i dont j=have a tym to go in gym thats why i decide to buy some equipment i used in gym .. and i think it was really the same you are more comfortable if you do it in your home and also you can save some money...
and if youre really like to build muscle like 6packs you just need a discipline no need an instructor..
cause me im really body concious infact i do swiming last 5mos. for my 6pack to develop it more ....i can say that exercising at home is more comfortable and also you can save money..

Yes, I'm very comfortable exercising within my home. Unfortunately I don't have a six pack but I'm slowly working on that one! I would love to return to swimming but it all boils down to finance right now, I cannot afford to go to my local pool. I love the machines that I have and they seem to work for me. My flat is a little crowded but I really don't mind this at all. I keep motivated by listening to positive music whilst I am exercising. Andrew
