What is your feeling when you get a portable TV as a gift.

Friends, I received a 14 inch color TV, as a gift from my government. This is absolutely free, and even though the government has first stated that it will give a TV only for people who do not have a TV, later on they have given it almost everybody. I had already, mentioned about my government giving a free TV to its people. A couple of days back, I was given a coupon, and asked to collect my free TV from a school nearby. Which I have duly done. What is your feeling and opinion on this.

Hi rameshkumaar, well it isn't free at all I presume but paid for out of your taxes so it just strikes me as really bad economic management. Is this just in your area or for everyone in the country? Wouldn't they be more sensible to either tax people less in the first place or use the cumulative money from all those free TV's to try and install some water into the areas which don't have any.

This is only for my state. My state is known as "TAMIL NADU", meaning the land of Tamils. (Tamil is the name of our language). You got a good point, regarding taxes. Of course you should know, that none of the governments througout the world never reduces taxes. The taxes only go up, they never come down.
Regarding water, the government is doing its level best, but you know India is a large country, and our state is quite a big state, and it is bigger than some of the states of Europe. One more thing you have to remember is we have been independent only for the last 62 years, and before that we were under British rule.

During the British rule, even though they did some good things to us, most of our wealth were sent to England, and most of our treasures, like the Kohinoor Diamond are in the show cases of English museums. Why I mentioned about British rule was, India was partitoned and left as a poor country. Then our rulers went in for a socialist model of government, and the people did not even have any entertainment. Only now, India is becoming a developing country, and our state government thought the long suffering people should have some basic entertainment. Originally, the TV was supposed to be given to people who did not posses any TV. Later on to make people like me happy, and hope I would vote for them in the next election, they have started giving it to many others.
You might say it is a waste of money, but at least this government had kept its promise, which it made before the election. They promised a TV, and they have given it. They promised a gas stove for people who did not have one, and they gave it.(I did not get it, since we already have a gas cylinder). They promised rice at 4cents a kilo and they gave that also. Once again I was not a beneficiary, because it is for people below the poverty line.

Well at first I would say "waw, the government sure knows how to spend their money wisely"... Because to my opinion almost everyone has TV nowadays and instead of getting you guys TV they could have used that money to help poor people get education... because in the end education it's what gets people out there.... I mean "you give a man a fish, you've fed him for a day... you teach him how to fish, you fed him for his lifetime"...
secondly I still would find it cool to get a free tv... it's very practical if you can use it with batteries on a picnic or during football/soccer season you can do a bbq on a porche and watch the game.

Thanks for the response lidiam84. The thing is the government is giving some thing to us instead of taking everything for them. Regarding education, my government is taking a lot of pains, so that the children will come to school and study. One of the benefits is the poor children are given mid day meals free in the government and the corporation schools. The thought being that atleast for the meals the poor parents will be forced to send their children to school. Our government has also banned child labour, so that the parents do not send their children for work.

Not too long ago the government was giving coupons for a Digital Box for our t.v.'s. We went from analog to Digital which I am not exactly sure why. Those who didn't have satellite or had very basic cable got one of these boxes. My husband's parents had satellite but also had very basic cable in their room. They got the box, but later decided to switch to a different t.v. company and hence had to get rid of the box.
Congratulations on your t..v, had you already had a t.v. previously?

It is quite nice on the part of the government to give coupons for a Digital Box for your TV. I hope our government also gives us a free Digital connection.
Yes I already have a TV, and in fact I recently changed my old 29 inch CRT to a 42inch LCD.Now I have a cute 14 inch color TV which I can keep in my bedroom.

Well I suppose you could say it's nice though here in the USA we recently we're in a manner of speaking forced to go to digital or else we'd have no t.v. A friend of our who lives out in the woods can not get many channels on the digital box so it's a waste that he got said box...
I am glad you've gotten a new t.v. and as you've put "cute" so you can watch television in your bedroom as well!

Wow?! That was nice, hope our government could also give us free TV, but I doubt it, especially we're on a crisis after the damaged made by different typhoons. Hope I could also get free items even if it's not from our government. Congratulations by the way!

If I had to get a portable tv as a gift, I would probably feel a sigh of relief. If you have any other tv you previously bought, and you need money, you could sell that. Or else you could exploit it for parts. Or just keep it there! If you don't have a tv, consider it like this: if you had ever planned to buy a tv, now you have an expenditure in less to consider.

I already have a TV, I cannot sell this TV, since it is illegal to sell the set which has been given by the government.
This is response to you answer which you have given in this discussion, regarding tile layers, I did not mean any thing wrong, what I wanted to say was, we are not able to get people to lay the tiles, since, because of industialization of my state, most of them have got work in the factories, and we have to import workers to lay down tiles, from other states.

My government has been on a giving spree. They have given gas stoves with connections to some poor people, and have also given cycles to school children. The way things are going, during the next election some political partys might start promising Lap tops, and motor cycles to the electorate.
