My laptop is years old, a gateway. I have to push and hold the power cord in tightly so the power stays on. Once I let go of the cord the laptop shuts off. The battery doesn't hold the charge anymore. Should I change the batter or the power cord? It might be better to buy a new Mac!

Disassemble laptop and just replace the charger jack inside the laptop, or u can also cut the jack from charger and solder it straight onto wires inside. Had a similar problem with my old laptop, that sure did fix it (Not the battery capacity ofc)

Personally this is always an interesting issue I am sure. It could be a little bit of both, or possibly the Computer itself. Do you have a Friend or someone who knows a little bit about computers, or someone you can borrow a battery etc. from just to see if it is the Battery. Because if it is something that small then it would be cheaper to replace the battery or power cord, but if it is your Laptop itself with the problem then buying New might just be your Best bet as well. It is a hard call for sure.

I actually had the same problem with my old laptop. The laptop itself was fine, it was my power cord that was the problem. One of the little wires inside the cord was completely burnt. I'd have to bend the cord a certain way for the power to stay on. That might be the issue with yours too. You can probably go online and try to find a replacement cord and they are fairly cheap these days. I got mine for around $30. As for your battery, it probably is time for a change since it has been years. So, you're probably running close to $100 maybe. That's not too bad but I don't if you think it's worth it. I mean, you can get some decent laptops for a fairly cheap price these days.
