Do you have a special day for the major house cleaning?

House cleaning - House cleaning duties
United States
November 15, 2009 1:07pm CST
Hello everyone. I hope that you all are doing good today. I know that we all have those household chores that we do everyday. I know that it seems the duties never get done. When I was a young girl my mother always told me that Saturday was our major house cleaning day. You know all the extra cleaning. As I got older it kinda of carried on with me. In last 8 years I have changed my major cleaning day to Monday. See I don't work outside of the home and with hubby home on the weekends it seems to be easier for me to do all the major cleaning on Monday. So do you have a certain day of the week that you do the major cleaning?

I have cleaning schedules set up at work for all of the clients homes, and I think I should take one of those and follow it, as the work is actually minimal, but keeps their homes looking nice. Their homes are cleaner than mine, but they do not actually have the amount of freedom I have to collect stuff and craft stuff, etc.

I seldom get a whole day off to complete anything or deep clean. My mom did less and less cleaning as I got older, and I do not really feel that I know how to deep clean all that well. When I was a kid she did most of the major stuff except laundry, while we were at school. I remember doing extra cleaning if company was coming. I think your plan is good, since you have a set schedule. My hubby does not have a set schedule and if he is at home he and I want to spend time together.

I have a proper cleaning on Monday and Thursday. These 2 days my part time cleaner will be here for 3 hours. She will clean the toilets, ceiling fans, vacuum, clean the kitchen and iron the clothes. The rest of the day I will do my own basic cleaning likes dusting, sweeping and mopping.

Growing up my mom always had us do the housework as a family Saturdays, each kid got a room to do. I don't really have a day set aside, I just kinda do bits and pieces throughout the week, but I try to do the carpets on Saturdays so if I need to I can shampoo and then we can spend the day out and not have to worry about being home for kids to get home from school etc!

Yes I come from a family of four. I also remember the Saturday cleaning before going to the store in town. Now that I am older(much older) I can see why you do the cleaning before going to town..I don;t like coming home to a messed up house..LOL.. Thanks for your thoughts and have a great day. Keep Smiling.

My husband and I don't have our own place so with that being said our chores are just that chores. We're expected to clean our bathroom, and the kitchen, and to keep our room dusted. On Saturdays I will usually dust the computer room for my MIL and my husband will dust our room. He's picky about things being moved so that's why I let him dust our room. As a child I don't remember our major cleaning days. When living with my parents my mom wasn't well enough to do cleaning so we were expected to do all of the laundry of the house, that is my sister and I. We were also to vacumm and clean our bathrooms. I'll be honest though, I hated the lot of it! I hated to clean so I wouldn't. When living with my grandparents I also hated and didn't do it. I had my spells of wanting to, and of course I always loved to rearrange. If it was major cleaning with promise of rearranging, I would! My grandmother used to be so picky, it was her style of cleaning the floors or it wasn't done properly! There was one time (unrelated note) that I was rearranging my room, and I rearranged it only to find it wasn't possible for my grandfather or grandmother to get to their stuff. My room was in the storage room, and though they moved some things, I still had to share the room with a lot of collectibles! I had to rearrange it right back so the whole process took about four hours! I'd love to rearrange mine and hubby's room but I don't think we could do so without having to remove a shelf, and then we wouldn't have anywhere to put our vcr/ dvd combo and our xbox 360, our games, yearbooks, his national honor society books, our guiness world record books... lol.. etc... etc...

I am anticipating a new place as I know you've read me say before... Habits aren't always that bad, lol, atleast you know when you do the housework, so your body is used to being more active on one day just because of added chores.

Maybe some day soon you will get the chance to have your own place to clean and re-organize like you want. I wish you the best. Like I said it was something that my mom started and it carried on with me. Sometimes I wish it hadn't...LOL.. Thanks for sharing. Keep smiling...

Hi bunny I sorry to hear that you have arthritis and emphezema. I know that can be very painful and brings down your inter spirits. On those days that you feel like it is just too much to take, tell yourself that you can make it though the day, and that the pain aint going to keep you down. I know this might sound silly but I believe in affirmations and they seem to work for me from time to time. Have a nice day. Keep smiling my friend.

Hi syankee Good to hear from you. My sister is also disabled and she gets her house work done as she can. I just wish that her kids would help her out more. She lives some distance from me and I can't go over there that often. I wish that I could help her out more. Thanks for sharing and have a good week. Keep Smiling.

Hello rosepedal, I'm thinking about house cleaning and I'm wondering what that is!. I don't have any real plan to clean my place up, I just do the neccessary when required. I hoover my place occasionally and I generally tidy things up but I don't have any particular day in which I do this. I nice to live in a clean place anyhow but I'm pretty sure that most people treat this as a chore rather than taking real pleasure from it. Andrew

Oh yes Andrew It is a chore. A big chore. I like the feeling and the looks after it is all said and done. To get started on it, I always take a big breath and then go after it..LOL. Thanks for your thoughts, and have a nice day. Keep Smiling.

Hi rosepedal, I hope you're settling into you new home fine and naturally there you are with all that extra space to clean. Let me see, when do I do mine. When I have a burst of energy. I loathe cleaning and would rather just do a little bit at a time, but I quite often do more if I'm determined, but it is just so tedious. I prefer to let it clean itself, if I'm going out I will spray everything in the bathroom with blue bathroom cleaner then just wash it off when I get home. And I can generally sweep a room or two as the coffee is making in the brik, which is what I'm going to do now. Of course if I don't pay attention and the coffee boils over then it means cleaning all the burnt coffee from the hob.

Hi thea Good to hear from you my dear. Thanks for remembering about my move. Things are going very well here. Yes I have more room to clean but Im really enjoying having that space to clean. That is okay... I have the coffee ordeal almost every day. Im not sure what hubby does of the mornings but I always have coffee spots to wipe up around the coffee pot...LOL Thanks for sharing and you have a great week. Keep Smiling.

I have to clean my house as well as the garden every day.Well i tidy up and set myself a goal of keeping the downstairs clean as well as tidy every day as i have 6 children and they are messy.I tend to clear upstairs of rubbish each time i put their linen away as that is the only way to keep up.So here it is a constant battle. As for the garden well i have 3 dogs to clean up behind.

I am glad we now have a household help unlike before when I used to help my mom with all the household chores. I use to study and have to clean at the same time.. :( Now, the help gets al the things done everyday but when i notice that something's wrong, that's the only time I'd go work on it. Also, our major clean-up day is only when we feel we need to or when it's a day before a major occassion. :D

I like that ideal of cleaning major on special events coming up. I wish I could re program myself to do that..LOL..I guess when we get use to do things a certain way it is hard to change that. I envy you for having someone to come in and clean. I would love to have that. Thanks for sharing and have a good week. Keep Smiling.

I clean daily, but we do major cleaning four times a year. I have a Spring cleaning day, Summer cleaning day, a Fall cleaning day and a Winter cleaning day. I go through the closets and donate any old clothes that do not fit or things we do not wear any more. My hubby and I both clean. We share all responsibilities together.

Yeah I do that too. What I do during the week is the sweeping, dusting and all the odd stuff. On Monday's I get little more detailed with things and clean overhead stuff and all..Thanks for sharing and you have a good week. Keep smiling.

I am pretty lucky to have a husband who does not mind cleaning the house. I hear that some men hate it, but mine does not seem to mind. I think mine likes to help because he was used to helping his mom when she was alive. He had lived with her for years because she needed care and when she had goten worse towards the end I had moved in to help before he and I got married. She did not want to live in the local nursing home and after talking to the staff we realized that she was not staying there no matter what.

When I was growing up Saturday used to be our major cleaning also. I used to do my major cleaning on Saturday. Now as I am a lot older I split up my cleaning into 2 days. I try to usually clean on Thursday and Friday but sometimes it might be Friday and finish up on Saturday. It is just me and my husband so it does not get to dirty.
• United States
16 Nov 09
yeah mine don't get too dirty either. It is just me and hubby here too. My boys are all grown and out on their own. I have a host of grandkids that do come and visit from time to time. But even with them coming over they are less messy than the hubby is...LOL..Thanks for sharing and have a good week. Keep Smiling.

I have to clean my home everyday because it is dusty in Hong Kong. My son can't stay in a dusty place because he is allergy to it. My maid needs to clean my son's room everyday. You are correct, duties never get done. It seems when you finished one, the other one will appear. Therefore I need somebody to help me to do such cleaning duties. If I need to do it myself and I go to work in day time, I will become crazy very soon.

In all honesty, I don't like the house cleaning work, but my wife always punch me to clean the house with her very Saturday or Sunday. You know, every working day, we leave the house in the early morning, and back at late night, have no sight to the cleaning work, in the weeken, it's the time we live in the house for long time, house cleaning is part of our weekend playbill. I always turn on the music in loud, enjoying the rhythm, and let's the house cleaning time goes more fast.

Oh Yes I always turn the music on when I start the house cleaning duties on Monday. I seem to get more done in less time with the music on. Well it is Monday now and I guess that is what I will be doing today. I think it will be a slow day for me today. Thanks for sharing and have a nice day. Keep Smiling.
