Have you ever engaged in a conversation with someone who just has to tell you a better story or a better experience then the one you just told them?
So here is mine: A co-worker of mine was telling someone else how her son broke his leg when they were out of state. (Fast Forward) The person she told the story to said wow. Then they responded with, a friend of my daughters' died over the weekend. And that story goes on...
But why to people feel they need to out do the other person? Why do people have such a hard time engaging in a good quality conversation without disrespecting the other person?
I feel as though when someone is supposedly listening to you, and you feel as though they are, being tentative... the entire time they are trying to think of something better. WHY?
Help me understand this one!

They do it for the very reason you said, to top the other person and draw the attention back on them. When someone comes in to work with good or bad news, the attention gravitates to them. If you have someone who should happen to need that same attention, then they will top that story to regain the title.
This is someone usually use to being in the light and do what they can to stay there. A special place only they exist in.

Hi Slewis, I think it is because they want to be accepted in the group! Sounds strange, isn't it? They crave for attention, and may be they are not getting enough of it, or they are suffering with some inferiority complex. May be, you can check on that the next time. Even I am trying to figure that one out. This is one thing that I found common in such people.
