Potatoes and onions are always a good staple to keep around, because you can add a lot of other stuff to it (herbs, spices), but another thing is making stir fried rice. Just cook a pot of rice, drain all the water out, then add one egg and anything of your choosing (frozen vegs, any meat, etc) plus a little soy sauce. A very filling meal and usually some leftovers for the next day. Rice can also be dressed up in a lot of other ways. Check out some sites like recipezaar.com or allrecipes.com for ideas.

Oh, P.S. You do need to put it in a skillet or wok with some oil to cook, after you've cooked the rice. That might seem obvious, but I didn't say it.

Man do I know how you feel We have been struggling too.I am a little tired of ramen noodles myself!!!If you can afford just a pound of ground beef and cheap noodles and tomato sauce and if you like onions n green peppers this is not very much money to buy and cut the onion and green pepper and fry and fry the ground beef while boiling the noodles then mix all together with tomato sauce and ketchup or you could get one of those store brand spaghetti sauces. Either way it's not too much too spend if you get store brand or you could get those t.v. dinners in the frozen aisle I dont know where you stay but here they usuallt have like 10 for $10.00 or even 89 cents to a dollar but I find I have to eat more than one of those cause they just dint seem to fill me up. Well I hope everything gets better for you guys and hope I helped in some way if I can think of anything else will let you know.I know me and my husband are having a rough time as well.Godd Luck;]Or you could get those frozen pizzas in the frozen aisle as well.Just a thought.Sometimes they also have in the frozen food aisle some cheap chicken fried steaks in a package and fry some fries or some kind of potatoes with that.

How about legumes. If you get the dried ones they are very economical. They are also a lot more nutritious than the Top Romen Noodles. Many a family lived on them during the depression (The Thirties). There is a lot you can do with them. My mom would mash the cooked northern beans add a little butter and spread it on bread. There are also vegetarian burgers you can make with beans. Sometimes she would make bean soup with dumplings. You buy a pound of dry beans and you get 5 cups of cooked beans. Rice is another inexpensive food and it goes will with beans and they give you complete protein. There are all sorts of recipes for beans and rice all over the internet. My favorite is white beans and corn bread. My kids even like it. Make them from scratch and they are cheap and much more filling then romen noodles.

How about tacos and english muffin pizza. Hot dogs are prety cheap. I know that roman noodles are cheap, but after a while they get boring. how about going to a search engine and looking up frugal cooking, they have some easy recipes that do not require much food.

I cut up potatoes and carrots and roast them with whatever I can find in the way of flavouring. Potatoes are really cheap if you buy them in the big bags.

yeah i can agree with ramen noodles are just a stop gap food and not really a meal in of itself, perhaps the cheapest types of food that i can recommend to you is rump meats. Its tough its cheaper than average and its nourishing

If you buy large quantities of, say, mince, mushrooms, onions, potatoes and tomatoes, you can literally bung the lot in a pan with a few herbs and spices (costing pence) and cook several portions of nutritious and delicious food at once. It works out cheaper on electricity / gas, too - just freeze the leftovers and reheat in a pot.
