I am fortunate enough to still have my job. My boyfriend and many of my relatives however, do not. My sign would say...
"LAID OFF?
WELCOME TO THE CLUB."

That is hard, because I would probably be horrible at peddling. I guess you would have to write something that would get attention, plus maybe a little humor, rather than having people pity you. I think the ones who perform, and then get some money from passersby would do best.
