Now a days it is common and fashion that everybody speaks in English and with children before going to school. In my house we will speak with our hubby mother tongue since I am fluent in his mother tongue. And with my sisters also i speak with my mother tongue. I use english only where and whennecessary. How many of them speak with their mother tongue in their home also. lets have a discussion.

Hi friend,
I am not a fanatic. My mother tongue is Kannada. I love my place, my people and my language. In my home and friends circle, we speak with our language. And I love to speak in Kannada in all the places wherever possible.

At home we speak in our mother tongue only. It is tamil and we are all comfortable speaking in it. Of course, at work we do speak English for professional reasons. But there are friends with whom I speak in only Hindi as well. So for me language has not been a problem.
Cheers!

I also speak my mother tongue at home and also with my relatives. Some people have a fashion of speaking other language. Mostly its just for show off. About talking to ones child. My parents never spoke to me in English when I was a child and I never had problem with English at school. The same was the case with our parents.

what a discussion yar.amazing to hear these...v use our mother tongue even for professional communications.i know three languages.including english.so even in college i use ma own mother tongue xcept when its utterly necessary with eng.moreover ma mother tongue is 'tamil'.it is the oldest language spoken in de world.so y should i degrade this best language?i really proud of ma language.infact i'am searching fr sum discussions in ma own language.
its very true dat if v spoke different language in home and with our family, how can a buddy child differentiate their own mother tongue?also they have less chance to master their mother tongue.eventually those precious mother tongue fades up and with in one or two centuries those languages may be vanished completely.those 'rich' languages dominates the world...so its very important to talk in our mother tongue as much as possible.

Hi priya
I will speak in my mother tongue only with my children and hubby. I strongly feel that if the parents speak in some other language with their children, how can the children learn their mother tongue? Even I have seen so many families speaking english with their children though it is not their mother tongue and think that they are fashionable by doing so. English is a good language. But where ever necessary, we should use but not at the stake of our mother tongue in our own house

We speak our mother tongue at home…there’s no better way to express oneself than this…each language has its typical words and phrases which can never be translated or does not have its equivalent in other language. And I would really not like to cuddle my son and use those baby words in English…talking in the mother tongue is such a relief…
We too speak English whenever and wherever necessary, besides our son goes to an English medium school so he gets his practice of English daily.

I use english only where and when necessary.
If you are living in the your native land, it would make sense to speak your mother tongue (or native tongue) whenever you wish. Of course it is good for the children to learn a second language that is used all over the world, which is English; in that way, your children will be able to communicate with other people rather than those just in his native land.
However, if you are moving from your native land to another country, it is best to learn and speak their language as much as you can, as you are now living in their world. It is very difficult to get along with all people, if everyone sticks to their on language and doesn't want to bridge the gap by learning the language of those they live with.
Here in the states, we have a many cultures who have moved here...yet, instead of learning our language, which is mainly English, they often stick to their native tongue. By doing this, they have created a gap and will never be fully accepted in out country. If you choose to live outside of your native land, it is only polite to learn their language and use it.

Atleast you should use your mother tongue at home na. I am also in different place from my native and married other language person only. Now before starting their school the parents are talking in english with children which do not require. If children go to school automatically they learn english. But how about mother tongue. If continue like that our children have to search dictionary in internet for their own mother tongue. Atleast we should talk in our house na. I am telling about that only. Coz i am also communicting with local language , but with my relatives strictly mother tongue. Thanks for commenting.

We usually speak with my mother tongue at home. But when talking to my son, we speak both English and mother tongue. I think it doesn't matter what kind of language you're talking as long as you deliver what you are trying to say and understand each other completely.

I too agree that language is for communication and others should understand what we say. But if we speak in our mother tongue that gives better communication instead of others language. We can express our feeling well in our mothe tongue.
Thanks for responding.
