hello everyone, last night i was chatting and the topic was about asthma and convulsions. i was telling him about how some village filipinos cure asthma. by catching flying lizards (tambubukag in our dialect). it is then toasted in open fire and its ashes are often added to drinks and the food that is eaten by the asthmatic person. he also mentioned that in their place in india, kids with convulsions get some sort of treatment wherein they use lizard tail (you know that when lizard tail get cut off from its body, it still shakes and moves like it has its own brain in it?) it is then picked up and placed in a tabeez (a small box or container of silver or brass) and then sealed on its mouth realy tight and then it is worn in the arm or the neck with a thread and then, no more convulsions. many would say that there is no connecting link between the said "treatments" and the patient diseases. but they are cured (well, most of them). do you think it is just psychological? but i think again.. we do not tell these patients until after they are cured. what can you say about that? ann

dear professor, traditional cures maybe funny to some especially those who prefer seeing a doctor rather than the older ways. we cannot blame them. we also know that medicines (tablets, syrup, etc) comes from herbs and animals so i guess, it is just a raw way but still effective. happy mylotting. ann

hello hazel, am sure you are a kababayan thats why you heard all of these. actually, this i heard from some natives in the province. they burn toast a tambubukag and then powder its ashes, and add some on drinks and food. some have attested that it really have cured them. i really hope it has its curing capacity. but if it has, we have to preserve this reptiles. i think it is on the verge of extinction. too bad. ann

There is plenty of evidence amongst tradioanal peoples that some "cures" are psychological. This includes the Australian Aborigine. However, in sdaying that, their treatment appears to work. From a scientific point of view, I guess if the contents of flying liards were analoysed, it is possible that scientists could find some very useful info.

Certianly the mind is a very powerful thing and if you believe what you are doing will cure you that may be all that is needed. But on the other hand I would not be at all surprised to find that lizards carry some chemical in their bodies which help with these conditions. I do know that reptiles nevers continue to respond long after being detatched from their brains.

hello pat, i agree with you. but since we are not knowledgeable and have not searched about chemicals from reptiles that could be useful for these types of illnesses, just cross fingers now that some scientist read this discussion and do some scientific research and find great value from it. thanks for your response. ann

My wife is asthmatic. She was once told me that she ate frog to cure her asthma and unfortunately it didn't cure her at all. But after giving birth to my son (normal delivery) her asthma was totally gone. I don't know if theirs a medical explanation about it or it just happen.
