Giving up the Internet?

Have you ever seriously considered giving up your Internet? I was doing just that for the past several weeks - until I figured out that my problem is not the Internet, but other things that have been going on in my life. I admit that I used to spend way too much time on the Internet, maybe up to 12 hours per day, but lately I can only bring myself to stay a couple of hours. What would make you consider giving up your Internet? Money? Time? Disinterest?

Hi world. This discussion is so timely for me.
I am having a thought of giving up after I have
experienced problems with hackers online. I
have written a discussion about this. And the
same as you, I am able lately to just be online
for a couple of hours compared to 10 hours or
even more before. If I would ever give up the
internet the primary reason would be time. I
think, that for me, it;s just a matter of finding
some other more productive things to spend my time
on.

Your honesty is refreshing, alicia! As I grow older I worry a lot about how I am spending my time. I don't want to waste any of it doing useless things when I could be concentrating on doing something that I would enjoy so much more.

I am well aware of how the Internet has insinuated itself into our lives, dorcam. My daughter was just remarking the other day how you have to go online these days just to fill out a job application!

I do not buy more speed, I have just the basic, which is fine for me. If you do not have any interest like me, I've got my boyfriend in another country, working, and my niece would need it for the research, so I have to be in contact with my boyfriend and my niece would save time, with all the homework she has. So I definately need it.

I would hate it if I had to give it up, but I would have to say time and money would make me give it up.

I agree about the money issue, Thoroughrob, because I was just considering how much my Internet bill has gone up over the last couple of years so that it is now double what it started out as. They claim that the speed is better, but I'm just not buying that.

No I have not as I would be lost without it and I will say that honestly as this keeps my Days going and I love being on here doing all the different things I do
When I was without it for a week I was lost and certainly bored
I hope you don't give it up as I would miss you I have noticed you are not on as much
Hugs

I've just been trying to put things into their proper perspective, gabs.It is impossible to enjoy doing some of the things you love when you are burdened by outside influences. Now, if I could only dig deep enough to come up with the courage that I need. I am so like the Cowardly Lion.

Hello worldwise. There is an amount of guilt I carry for spending too much time here. There are other things I should be doing; exercising, chores, sewing, reading and other hobbies I always planned on pursuing when I had the time. The socialising though is important as are the things I learn so I doubt I will ever loose interest. As for the cost, I'm on the cheapest rate and it's therefore affordable albeit my connection is slow - I can live with that.

I am not denying the benefits of the Internet, Ms Tickle, and I also feel guilty about not focusing on some of the other important things I need to be doing.

Hi, worldwise1. I have considered giving up the Internet. I would like to work from home doing mail order. I want to limit my time to the Internet to about 6 hours a day if possible. The Internet keeps me very busy. I would like to make money on the Internet, but I am finding it very hard to do. That would be the main thing that I would give up a little more.. But, of course, I will be here at myLot. There is no doubt about that!

You might be able to find some helpful tips on howstuffworks.com, cream. They have information on just about anything you can imagine. The Internet can become very time-consuming if you allow it.

Right now there is no chance of giving up the internet as my HR business depends entirely on internet only.It is the mail that has become the prime tool to run my business.Otherwise I do not spend much time on browsing in internet unless and otherwise to help my daughter in studies. My personal usage is mainly Mylot after my business correspondence.

I understand, balasri, that many businesses now depend heavily upon the Internet, so I can relate to how important it is to you. It's great that you are helping your daughter also.

I think it gets like every thing else we do, gets boring after awhile. Sometimes I can't get on enough in one day, others I will check email, check in with friends and then off to find something else to do. And sometimes I can't find anything on there that interest me.
It has to hold my attention for me to stay on. Some times when the computer gets to acting up, I will tell hubby, I think will just sell it and get off. But wouldn't do that. Being disabled and not able to do a lot of things it passes time. And yes other things happen in our lives to take up the time we spend on here. You seem to enjoy MYLOT, I did for awhile, then after some heated discussions on here with people that was only interested in you agreeing with them no matter what I got tired of the arguing, I know that it makes me about $10. a month to use on some the other sites, but once something bores you, it just not the same any more.

I am not here even one-third of the time I used to be here, bdugas, because the atmosphere just got to be too hostile for me for awhile. I don't think I would ever completely give it up, but I do try and limit my participation now to "safe" topics since I discovered how truly nasty some people can get. I agree with you that the arguing has driven some members away. I know that I have not seen some here for quite sometime, but they are on other sites that I visit.

Hi, it's really hard for me to give up the internet, I need internet for my work, and also when I go home, I use internet to watch TV show, and if there is no internet in my life, it means I can do nothing when I'm working, and I can't watch my favorite TV show, that's too bad, and makes me so boring, I don't know whatelse to do every day, that's so sad to me.

For me, it is next to impossible to give up the Internet completely. You see, the Internet has been an important part of my daily life and I will not continue my life without the Internet.
Perhaps some people are addicted to the Internet or it has brought us some side effects on our life, I don't think it is necessary to give up it. For the long run, the Internet will play an important in our life in the future, so, it is not wise to give up it easily.
On matter what happen someday, I won't choose to give up the Internet.

I find it odd to hear that so many people consider the Internet vital to their life, getbrowser. While it provides me with information, entertainment, and communication to a certain extent, I do not consider it vital to my existence. It is manmade, and, as such, subject to failure.

I think it comes with ages. Young people chat in messenger play games etc..
older you get, you just check email, news , pay bills ...etc.
not much.
i dont consider giving up internet because its very useful and
lot of school work is needed to be done. Maybe someday I will use
internet less than I am doing now. Cant give up money either because
it is needed almost everyday. gas, electrisity etc..

I have to disagree with you, toataim, because I just might be the oldest person on myLot(or close to it), and I like to play games on the Internet, watch the occasional movie, listen to music, etc. So, you've got it all wrong about older users.

Internet may brought harm to you if spending 12 hours on it everyday.
Average hours for normal person is just around 6 hours per day.
Actually I am online earner and I need internet for sure.
Without internet means I have to find other new job.
Thus, internet is important for me.

I only spent a lot of hours on the Internet when it was very new to me, queenatiuk, butnot anymore. Even then I was just playing games on my favorite sites until I discovered myLot.

I feel the question is not “What would make you consider giving up your Internet”, but “Do you feel you have a problem with over-use of the internet, and why do you think that may be”.The internet is great. In many respects, with so much information and intrigue at your finger tips it is as compelling as a good book.
Just like a good book, the net is often a source of escapism. I’m able to identify in myself here and now that I should not be typing this response; I should be working on my monologue for my Acting Degree. Although this entry serves no particular use in my life, I’m still finding immense satisfaction in sharing my point of view. In a nutshell, I am forgoing the things that matters and is intrinsic to my future [monologue] for something that bears instant reward and satisfaction.
For many people the innumerable distractions available through the internet mean they do not have to take action in their own lives. Why is that? Is your life so terrible that you have to be distracted? If so, change it! For those people I assure you, you will not find an answer online – it’s in you. Technology and the instant answer culture of the internet has quietened our intuition.

Thank you for taking some of your valuable time, shfm, to respond to my post. No, my life is not terrible, and I always have something to do to keep myself busy, so that is not why I use the Internet. Also, being on the Internet too much is not a problem for me, rather it is budgeting my time more wisely. Even the Internet cannot quieten my intuition.

I believe everyone uses internet for a certain reason. Someone use it for working; someone use it for entertainment; some others use it for studying. Whatever the reason, I'm sure all of us are sensible of what we're doing. We don't take rash actions without giving them a serious thought first. For me, I use internet to work, study and entertaining; but I'm not addicted to it. Usually I stay 3 hours per day online and I see no reason of my giving up the internet.

I get much of my news from the Internet, chenxiaoyue, as well as research topics I want to learn more about. I also find new music that I might want to add to my library. It's also a great way to keep in touch with the online friends I've made!

I have a wireless internet connection and sometimes I can only spend 5 or 10 minutes online before the internet stops working. I can get really frustrated when that happens, and sometimes my frustration makes me think that no internet is better than such a lousy internet connection, and I am ready to give up my internet forever...but I don't really mean it. When I calm down I realize I much I would miss it if I actually gave it up I use the internet in so many different ways, and there is a lot of things that I would miss if I was never able surf the internet.

I never got addicted to the internet but sure got addicted to myLot. Getting addicted to the internet can at times lead to absolute waste of time just browsing websites. I instead believe in utilizing every minute on the internet. If I'm done checking my emails and other entertainment stuff I immediately shift to some productive work on the internet, like article submission, myLotting, learning various programming languages, blogging etc.
