"Its your kitten"

My brother was with his wife to be for about a year before they married. She had a lovely brown and white Springer Spaniel that was very well trained. Bandit, the dog, had not, however, been spayed. She was always going thru heat and false pregnancies. One day, after not having a litter of puppies, my brother and his soon to be wife were having a party. Into the middle of this party came Bandit, carrying an orange kitten. Now, this was a really smart dog. She came to my brother and put the kitten down at his feet and looked up at him with her big Spaniel eyes. He said to her "You'll have to ask your Mother." Bandit picked up the kitten and carried her over to her owner. Put the kitten down and looked up at her mom with those big Spaniel eyes. "T" looked down and then told her that she'd have to ask her father. Bandit picked up the kitten, once again, and carried it back to my brother and put it down and again turned those Spaniel eyes on him. Needless to say, by this time the whole party is watching, and laughing, over this. My brother told her. "Okay, Bandit, you can keep the kitten, but he's your responsibility, you have to take care of him." At that point Bandit picked up the kitten, carried him over to her bed and gave him a bath (remember, Spaniels have "wet" mouths so I'm sure that kitten looked a sight at that point!) I always tell this story and say that the kitten, Riley he was named, was her "false puppy." She had a false pregnancy, false labor and had a false puppy. That did seem to break the cycle and the next year she did actually get pregnant and have a litter of puppies. "T" got her spayed after that. And that's the story of my brother's ex's dog and her false puppy. you ever have a dog adopt another species of animal?

Sherlock wanted to keep a frog outside my parent's home. He wanted to play with it, but for some reason the frog didn't want to stay . I wonder why.

Aw that is so cute and adorable. I never had an dog try to adopt another type of animal, but I did have a dog who tried to befriend a cat and always fed the cat each time the cat stopped by.

how cute, I don't think our dogs would bother a cat in the yard, but the feral momma cat wouldn't go in our back yard - I think she was using the next door neighbor's green house

That's such a great story! The only stories I've heard like this have been the ones I've seen on the news.

awwwwwwwwwwww...now that is just too good, Elic. Poor Bandit just wanted a baby of her own to care for and figured the kitten will have to do. People don't give animals the credit they deserve. I had a Lab Retriever that was always bringing me sick and/or injured animals to fix. Squirrels, birds, rabbits, etc..small animals. He would set the animals down gently at my feet and give me that soulful look to make them all better. Never knew when he was gonna turn up with yet another animal I would have to bury when he wasn't around.

Hey Elic! What an absolutely adorable story! I can just picture that sweet little Spaniel carrying that poor little kitten back and forth and everyone laughing! I think that is so sweet how animals are so willing to take on other species with such ease! They are alot smarter then some humans are! And they think that people can't learn tricks from their animals!

Bandit wasn't a little dog, the Springers are the biggest of the Spaniels, and Bandit was a pretty big Springer too, not much smaller than a Lab

I know physically maybe a big dog, but surely a sweet loving dog able to take good care of such a tiny little kitten! And when all is said and done, that's all that matters! What a wonderful doggy!

That is a very cute story. I especially like that the spaniel ask both Mom and Dad to keep the kitten. No I have not had any thing like that happen with any of our cats or dogs.

I'm rolling with laughter at this story! Did Bandit still love the kitten as much after her own puppies were born? My niece has a bird that loves to talk. They also have a yorkie. The bird acts like she's mother to the dog. Though Gizmo is too big for the bird to pick up, she will sit on her perch and tell Gizmo what to do. "Take the food back to the kitchen", "Get off the chair" "Stop barking" All things that Samantha and Shane have said to Giz.

When I was about 10 or 11, a cat had kittens in the neighbor's garage. I'm not sure what happened to "momma", but the neighbor's collie would keep watch over them and herd them if they wanted to roam. (That dog also liked to climb up on the doghouse roof... no, not named Snoopy.)

collies are good at herding animals or even kids, I guess the collie was just looking out for them

when we had our own house we got a puppy of mixed breed and took her home and she then adopted a stray black kitten someone had dumped in our yard. We had had the puppy spayed but she still seemed to have a mother instinct as she licked the kitten and they slept together. as they grew up they stayed friends and midnight still slept curled up by Swap our dog. Swap mourned when someone accidently ran over Midnight. the cat was killed instantly and the driver went right on down the street and disappeared. the car was old and didn't even have a license plate on its back. no way to id.the driver.

Riley didn't work out to be a very good puppy - he was always CAT and KNEW it. He was alright with Bandit but the other dogs were beneath his notice! He was about 6-7 weeks when he was "adopted."

Nope. But then, how many dogs have I had or known? (Hint: I don't need more than one hand to count them...) Anyway, even though I've heard this story before, it still makes me laugh whever you tell it! (And you call yourself "boring." Tsk! ) Maggiepie WHERE ARE any OF OBAMA'S RECORDS?!?

I just flashed on a memory--my youngest aunt's German Shepherd b1tch, Raksha, who was golden with a black saddle--took up with a youngish cat (5 or 6 months, maybe) some (censored! ) twit had dumped on Gramma's farm. (That happened all too often.... The kitty was a brindle calico, & looked so much like Raksha's coloring that when she curled up in her big friend's embrace, you couldn't tell where Raksha ended & the kitty began! I think Raksha needed a baby, as she was never fixed, nor allowed to breed. I'm sure Gramma thought she could,'t afford to feed a bunch of large dogs, & wasn't cozy with most of the people in the closest town, & might be stuck with any litters. I do know she wouldn't have had money to neuter any animals. Thanks for sparking that ancient memory. Maggiepie WHERE ARE any OF OBAMA'S RECORDS?!?

That's wild. Hehehehe. Back on my uncle's farm (when I was just a tad), the old male Golden Lab adopted one of the piglets. Although that crazy old coot of a pooch wouldn't hurt a fly, he'd never let you get near his bed, when sleeping with and/or caring for, that wee little pig. I can still remember seeing him fuss over that tiny sweet animal. What ticked me off about it though, was that my uncle gave ME the responsibility of looking after the little guy...however, somehow I lost out to the dog getting in there first. Being 5 years old did have its disadvantages when it came to dogs being bigger than I. Mind you, the dog and the pig grew to become the best of friends. cdrxo

I have always had cats because i really love cats..I have two now, one is a baby & then i have one that is about 10 years old and he is very smart too..This little kitten is always getting into tight places & she cannot get out...If i open a closet door she runs in and sometimes i do not see her, so my older cat will go sit by where she is and stare at me until i come to the kittens aid...The other day the kitten got hung up in a coke a cola box, she jumped in the box & it flipped over trapping her inside , so the older cat he went over there & was chewing that box to try to get her out....When his water thing gets empty he pulls it by his teeth & lays it by my feet...He has always been a fun cat...I think this baby is going to be a little trooper too, maybe a little tomboy...

When our water bowl is empty, Nef or Tuti will knock it into the middle of the room. I really don't know which, but I've seen them both messing with the bowl and they came together so it might be a "tag team" effort - its a really big bowl and sometimes it isn't completely empty - yet!

That is so true, slick, some are so much smarter than others too, Bandit was one of those, she might very well have had that kitten waiting on the sidelines until it was the middle of the party so she wouldn't be turned down.

my old afghan hound attempted to "adopt" the neighbor's pet rabbits when they got loose.unfortunetly for him, they weren't into it. he wouldn't have hurt them but they didn't know that.
