Hi friends,
These days social networking sites like Facobook, Orkut are quite popular. Everyone has some account in one of these sites and we like to keep ourselves updated in those sites. Also it helps us to keep in touch with friends and family so its quite an interesting place to be.
As iam running my own organization i see many of our staffs keep such sites on in the office PC while they work. I guess its some how affecting their performance and it should be stopped immediately. I dont want to be rude to them but I have to block such sites in the office PC's.
So friends do u surf social sites from your office? Are they allowed at your work place? Do u think that helps u in de-stressing yrself or its an obstruction to your work?
Cheers,
Tutul

Hi ResulR:i understand why you think that and you're probably right. I was just thinking about how a worker feels and that, there are some times where you simply feel boring and you'd like to do something else. In my case there's no deal with it because i'm a very organize person that know how to distribuate his time but... this would be probably a mess in most of the cases. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day.

During break time, we are allowed to surf other sites, play games, and do our social networking programs. But I believe that any company will not allow their employees to use their working hours just to be surfing their own social networking sites. As a professional, it is not also a good practice to use company time for our own programs online. It is not correct and it should not be practiced.

Hi blessing,
Our nature of work is very stressful and involves a lot of travelling. So when they are at office and doing some paper work I usually stay very friendly to my people. They work hard and thus I try to crete a good atmosphere in my office.
Having said that of late i see many people getting too much invloved in the sites i mentioned. So i need to rectify it before it goes out of hand.
Thanks for the suggestions , BTW I really dont mind of they want to use those sites during their break.
Cheers,
Tutul

I work in an hotel in the reception and there are certain days and certain hours when work is slack. Like today for example.
When I went for the interview and then was taken on for the job over two years ago I was told that I could bring a book or knitting or whatever for when it is slack. In the hall there is a computer available for the guests so I decided I would rather use that. It is not the one we use for the stuff pertaining to the hotel and I don't use it when the guests need it. But on days like today when I am doing an eight hour shift and the hotel is almost empty, I am pleased that I am allowed to be here. I don't use it for anything other than my mail and myLot. The bosses know I use it and it is fine with them.
I can see that if I worked in some other type of office then it might not be allowed and certainly should not be if it interferes with my job. During breaks though I think it should be acceptable.

Well you asked if I think social networking sites should be allowed at a workplace, and I do believe they should be ALLOWED as long as the usage is not interfering with work productivity. For instance, checking for updates or shooting a quick comment or message seems acceptable but not for someone to spend all day there lol. If someone is on break or say they have to be THERE but cannot really do anything, I'd say that qualifies too, such as if you answer a phone but the phone is not ringing. I worked one job once where I was basically a switchboard operator, and when the phone wasn't ringing, I actually got to read, and I read several novels a week. At the time I did not have access to a computer that had anything other than the company intranet, nor did I have a cell with internet and other stuff, so.... I read books lol.
BTW, I don't feel there's anything different from using a social networking site than there is someone playing solitaire all day up in the IT dept, because I can tell you that's what a lot of IT people did on the 6th floor at my last full time job. If you are using a networking site so much that other people are NOTICING, then you're using it too much. If nobody notices, then it is probably just fine. Of course it depends how nosy coworkers or superiors are, so that would depend from employer to employer. Some companies block access to a lot of things so people cannot even be tempted. I am at a school often, and I already know I couldn't get on facebook there, but there are kid friendly social sites I could log onto and play apps and games, as well as search for job listings and probably even movie times and information about community activities and news.

Hi tutul0045: thanks for asking me this question that it's too relevant nowadays and that it else has two points of view: for me as a worker it's a nice way to relax but i understand that you'll probably feel unconfortable with your employees behaviour. Just take it easy! As long as they work you should not interdit these sites. In my case i can do a nice work no matter if i keep update my facebook during the process. If you actually think what really matters is how they work, if they can deal with everything and take 5 minutes an hour to update their social networks there's no reason to discuss with them. Have a nice day. Hope everything will be ok in your job.

It is easy to become addicted to social networking like facebook because of the many games and applications which unknowningly take up a considerable amount of time for the user. Therefore the employee may not be able to concentrate on his work and get distracted. If it's used every day, then it becomes a habit. This is not healthy as the employee will lose the motivation to complete the tasks of the day. So it is good to block access to social networking sites in company network. It could help unwind and free up stress, but it can be easily abused and becomes a bad habit.

It's in the discretion of the administration if they should block or not the social networking sites.
I agree in you that it could sometimes affect employee performance specially if they already got addicted to it. Take for example Facebook applications. People get hooked to games and chatting during breaktime that sometimes they didn't notice that it's already time for work. So addictive that even when sleeping, they still think of the games they played in Facebook. I know some people who went like this.

Many things can hamper a job other than the Internet, such as cellphone, chatting, daydreaming, and much more. I do not agree if all that is forbidden. It could be all that is 'saturated medicine'.
I much agree if you do the following things:
1. Determine work targets.
2. Motivation of employees in achieving the target.
3. Teamwork motivation.
4. Make a system of reward and punishment, etc.

According to what I know, these social networking sites should be banned in the work place, which is helpful to the companies and staffs.
With the popularity of the social network sites, more and more choose to spend much time on these sites to keep in touch with their friends, play the webgames and share their personal experience. Even if it is time to work, someone may tend to spend some time on these sites because they have been addicted to them, which is the factor to decrease the working efficiency.
For the long run, these social networking sites can throw cold water on the enthusiasm for labor of the staffs.

I've never seen a workplace where surfing social networks was allowed. I have only been in the employee side so far, so I'm one of those who even if it's not allowed will surf them anyways.
About work performance, it depends. It's true that if you have too many distractions you don't concentrate in your work, as work is usually boring, but if you have no distractions at all you can't concentrate either.
Maybe the strategies with employees would go towards incentivation plans for their working results and not so much relying in restrictions.
