LOL lol is 'laughing out loud'. I use it a lot to show that I am laughing at what I have been reading. If I write 'lol' it is only a small laugh and if I write 'LOL' it is heartier. If something has really made me laugh a heck of a lot then I will write ROFLMAO which means 'rolling on floor laughing my buttox off' Hope that means that you can now have a better laugh here too

Actually LOL means Laughing out Loud. It is a good way to indicate that you think something is funny or if you are just joking with someone like if you jokingly say something to someone then you type LOL to let them know you are just joking. I use it a lot on line myself. I have used the smilies too for the same thing but I do use LOL quite often.

I tend to use acronyms more than I use emoticoms, because I often misread the emoticom because of my bad eyes, whereas I can recognize LOL and other things a lot easier.

Hi, Ice! It's more often used to indicate that the writer is joking or that they think whatever they've written is funny...

Hi icesmile! I too was puzzled with the mysterious LOL and ROFl, among others. I don't like using them, but I do. When a person is face to face having a discussion, words have intent that we discern through facial expressions and subtle nuances. None of this happens through internet communication and words that are meant to be innocuous may come across as rude or perplexing. Attaching a smiley face or short abbreviation makes our intentions clear. And yes, maybe it makes some people smile.
