How can I make new friends?

I am new in the area. I don't really know anyone. How do you go about making new frineds? I don't want to seem pushy or nosy, but I don't know how to start a conversation or how to figure out how to make a lasting new friendship. Suggestions?

Hi,nsep,Try to join in social sites like orkut..facebook.twitter..myspace..etc and start conservation or start exchanging ideas first and then you decide with whom you want to continue friendship based on the like mind.All the best.
