As there are lots of referral links hide under tinyurl sites, and sometimes these pages contain viruses, malware and spayware, do you trust them to open that site, even if its showing you greed of earning money?

Basically, tinyurl just shortens a long URL. Others prefer a short than a very long one, as is the case of most referral URLs and other links (affiliate links, etc).
Most are just referral URLs, which people like to cloak as to hide their ref link.
Is it possible to get a virus by accessing a URL?
It should be downloaded first before it can get into a system, right?
