Do you like wearing hooded tops? Or, do you avoid them like the plague?

When I think about hooded tops I'm thinking that they make you look a little sporty and there has even been talk that others feel intimidated when they see a group of youths walking around with their hoods up! Is this you? Do you feel intimidated when you see a group of youths wearing hooded tops? I don't wear them myself, not outside anyway! This probably sounds a little silly but I have a couple of favourite tops that I wear indoors with the hood up, only in winter I might add! I think they are really good in terms keeping you warm and things but I would never wear one outside, perhaps it's a negative self-image on my part. Anyway, what do you think of hooded tops? Are you a youth that likes wearing them? I'm struggling here to come out with different discussions but it's not that easy is it!

i love hoodies!
they are my favourite type of jumper.
i also have a long (dress type) sip up hoodie.
i wear them out all the time, sometimes with the hood up and dont have an issue with it.
i think is depends on the scene, the other clothes worn and the body language and attitude of the person wearing the hoody that induces the intimidation and give the hoodie a bad name.

I think that's true. I have two hooded tops myself but that's about all I have in my collection. I would like to pick up some more but I think that they are quite expensive. I think that I will wait until the January sales and then I will have a look round in hopes of picking up a couple of hoodies! Andrew

Here where I live, thousands of people both younger and older wear hoodies. Some even wear them during the summer months. Since so many folks wear them here, people don't really make any differences in people wearing them. Though when I've visited smaller cities, I have noticed some people usually older will treat you differently when wearing the hood up, especially law enforcement.
I wear one nearly everyday on the colder days and I'm not to concerned with how other people think about it, I'm more concerned with staying warm.

I'm thinking they are probably good for that, keeping you warm. I'm also thinking that it's quite easy to be judged as well whenever you wear a hoodie, it shouldn't be this way but the media has portrayed hoodies in a bad light I think. I'm not really into the fashion thing but it's nice to look good! Andrew

I think they look good, and if people don't like them then that's them. But yeah it is messed up that people will judge someone simple because of a piece of cloth. That's similar to the new laws now that if someone is carrying a bandanna or wearing too much of the same color, they charged with gang affiliation.

Hi Andrew. I don't make it a habit to wear hooded tops, but I don't avoid them like the plague either. I do buy them for my husband as he likes them for work, especially during the cold weather. It really helps to keep him warm.
One thing I don't care for are beanies. Now those things can be intimidating and can make anyone look like a thug! LOL I actually used to feel the same way about beanies that some feel about hoodies. Silly, I know. I don't feel so intimated by them now though as my husband loves wearing those things too. LOL
Happy mylotting!

That's a regular habit of mine! I always wear them indoors but never venture outside wearing them, strange I know but there you go! They do look very good at times and the material is quite thick as well! There are many youths that hang around the area around nine at night and they can be a little intimidating but still, I lock myself away in my flat and watch some tv with a big bag of crisps! Andrew

I have a few hooded tops which I wear around the house as part of my pajamas/lounge wear. I wear these style of tops when it is cold as I can put the hood up to keep warm, rather then just switching the fire or radiators on when I get slightly cold. I'm trying to cut down on outgoings so I always wear warm clothes around the house and I find that hooded tops are ideal for this.
Hooded tops are associated with gangs of lads that cause trouble and there are many people that will cross the road when they see them in the street as they are worried that something may happen. Unfortunately things have happened so people are right to be cautious but it is unfair that people are wrongly labelled.

Yes, it's a shame that hooded tops have this label attached to them. I guess when you see a gang of youths and they all have their hoods up and they are looking directly at you it kind of looks suspicious! Still, I think the press has contributed in relation to giving out a negative message regarding hoodies. Andrew

hi andrew^^;;
maybe we are living in a different environment so i cannot associate wearing hooded tops as a gangster. well it would add that in a way of being sporty which is connected to being strong and cool
these trend of hooded tops was very popular when i was in highschool about 12-14years back. well yes it's a plague that everyone couldn't resist to have. i can't deny i had mostly hooded shirts too. it's like being unfashionable and outcast when one doesn't wear one..so it's not being a gangster or juvenile delinquent at all
and yeah it's useful for cold weather since my city is on the mountain

You are very lucky to be living on a mountain, I would certainly swap with you anytime!. Well, I don't think hooded tops are associated with gangsters, I may be wrong! Actually they are portrayed as that in certain movies. Still, I'm beginning to think that they are very useful now in terms of keeping warm and keeping the wind off the neck! I have several hooded tops but to date I have only ever worn them indoors. I would love to wear them outside so I'm thinking that I should get rid of the concious thing! It really shouldn't matter what others think! Andrew

Yes, some hooded tops look really good and colourful and can be quick thick when it comes to the material and fabric. I wear them occasionally in my own home but never venture outside with them. Andrew

Hi, AndrewF! Your discussion is fine! I have a few hooded jackets. But, I am not that much of a hooded wearer myself. I am not into the sporty thing. I like the hooded shirts that women are wearing as of now. It has another shirt under the first shirt. This shirt has a hood attached to it. I do feel odd when I am passing guys with hoods on. It does make them look suspicious when they are hurdled together in a crowd.. But sometimes, they are not looking for trouble. I admit, hooded clothing of any kind can be creepy only if it is worn in a way to harm.

There's definitely a very powerful image attached to the hooded top! Some people feel intimidated when they see a lot of youths together wearing hooded tops. I guess it's a fashion craze as well. I don't mind wearing them myself but I have yet to venture outside in a hooded top! Andrew

I have never liked hooded tops and I have always been intimidated by too many peopleespecially youths wearing hooded tops because it gives them a certain criminal look.I personally dont wear them either because they look inappropriate in our tropical climate and even when its cold at least that is how I view it.In addition wearing hooded top always make me very hot after a while.I dont even wear hats and caps

Hi ronny! I think there are a lot of people that feel intimidated by gangs of youths wearing hooded tops! Where I live they tend to linger down the bottom of the road and it's hard to get by them, they take up the whole street. Still, I don't mind wearing them myself although I have only been wearing them indoors to date! I think that the hooded top has received a lot of bad press lately and it's probably this that has given the common hooded top the bad image! Andrew

I have a few hooded tops I wear once in awhile. I only put the hood up though if the wind is blowing alot. I have one that is waterproof so I wear it if it is raining to keep my head dry.

I think that hooded tops are probably good for that, keeping the wind out. When you wear a hooded top and you have the hood up it really does cover all of your face almost. Some people are threatened by this and I can understand why but it's a shame that they are put in such a bad light. Perhaps things will become better over time! Andrew

I like hooded tops!! I love to use them when I train outside (in winter) but it's unfortunately limited to training, I have to wear rather formal everywhere else.
When I was a teen I used to keep the hood up all the time, it made me feel better, safer, I liked it.

Yes, they are probably ideal for training, I get the image of Rocky Balboa in the Rocky movies! When I am wearing mine I feel quite safe too! It's like I'm surrounded or protected or something! Some of them can be quite huge and baggy! I like the ones with the front pockets, it's nice to stick your hands in and keep warm. Well, I just wear jeans and t shirts mainly, quite plain! Andrew

Like sweatshirts? I love to wear my sweatshirts, I feel like they hide the flaws I see in my body. Plus they can be sooo comfortable! I have a ton of different hoodies, I even have one that has the year I graduated on it [that would be this year - 2009 baby!] .

Oh well, congratulations on the graduation! I don't mind hooded tops, I don't have many of them, just a few but I like to wear them indoors as opposed to outdoors! Winter is almost with us now so I'm thinking that it will be time to wrap up and wear my hooded tops a lot more often! They tend to be quite expensive too and the material is quite thick, good quality I think! Anyway, it's ok as a fashion accessory and I like the idea of looking fairly sporty! Nice chatting with you. Most of my sweaters have hoods, I like how they look like. Also when it's very cold I wear my hood up as if my head gets cold I get huge headaches ^^U -not always I remember to bring a hat-.
I don't see anything wrong with hoods up, it can be fashion or just useful :)

I think they are very useful during the winter months and can definitely help you keep warm. I'm guessing that they have a very negative image though and this is no fault of theirs! Some people devote their lives to wearing the hooded top and I don't see anything wrong with this. Everyone should have the choice to wear what they want to wear without being made to feel guilty. I have two hooded tops and that's about all I have in my collection! Andrew

In my avatar photo I'm wearing a hooded top and this is one of the hooded tops that I wear regularly. I don't mind them if truth be told but I'm thinking that there are a lot of people that would avoid them completely. I guess they also stand out as some kind of status symbol! They are nice though when you are trying to keep warm. Andrew. Welcome to My Lot by the way.

i love wearing hooded tops, its makes you look sporty and also adds on the chic look,
and though i usually dont cover my hair, weraing hoods helps out if i get caught out in the rain or snow without a head covering, and they are usually warm, hoodies are cool.

I guess they are ok when it comes to winter, they definitely help keep you warm. I wear them indoors generally but I would like to start wearing them outside as well. I want to get rid of this self-concious thing! Winter is right around the corner now so I suppose a lot more people will start wearing their hooded tops! Welcome to My Lot by the way. Andrew

Are you talking about Hoodies??!! I love those things. I live in them. I got my first one after i turned 18 and never looked back at anything else. To be honest, I like the look of a hoodie with a cool pair of jeans and sneakers, and then again i am all about jeans and t-shirts and sneakers. I live in a hoodie 365. I have one with me during every season of the year because you never know when you are going to need one. It might be chilly that day or rain or if you are snoozing on the beach, then you have a make-shift pillow to use. I have a self concious issue too. I don't like my arms exposed too much because I have dry patches that I see very well. They are also comfy with a pair of Hannah Montana PJ pants. I actually collected them about 10 years ago at college parties. If you were at my party and your left your hoodie, chances are you would see me in it later. I love them.
I understand what you mean about the teens today looking like hoodlums. I am not really intimidated by them because if you ever get a good look at them, they have their hoods up and their pants down under their rears. I come to the conclusion that they are just hiding their faces cuz everyone gets to see their underwear!! Have a good day and I hope I change your attitude towards their usefulness!!

Yes, that's it, the good old hoodie! Yes, they are probably very useful especially when it's cold. I have only ever worn them indoors but I'm thinking that I should probably challenge myself and get on out there wearing one! Some of them are so colourful and quite think too in terms of the fabric. I think that it definitely looks quite sporty! I too love wearing jeans, t shirt and trainers, I feel comfortable dressed like this. I think after having created this discussion I'm slowly starting to respect the common hooded top! Andrew

Hi Andrew, personally I would never wear a hooded top just like I don't wear hats, for the simple reason they make my hair go funny. I did resort to borrowing my ten year olds wooly hat a few times when we've been out walking in strong winds and I knew I wouldn't be going anywhere where I had to remove it in a public place.
My son has a couple of hooded tops and he looks good enough to eat in them, as they make his eyes look so huge, but then he looks good in hats and doesn't have to worry about his hair looking a mess as he's a boy.
Never come across that hood culture over here but it sounds intimidating.

Hi thea, nice to hear from you again and I hope that you are well! Well, I don't like wearing hats either, I tend to keep my hair very short as you can see! There is definitely a hoodie culture over here but there has definitely been a lot of bad press lately regarding this fashion style! The photo in my avatar, well that's actually a hooded top but I tend not to wear the hood. Still, when winter finally arrives then I start wearing the hood and it keeps me warm when I am studying and drinking lots of cups of tea! Nice to hear from you again. Andrew

hi,Andrewfreyne!
I would like to wear a hooded top but I never have the hood up unless it is raining.the situation you described sounds a little rediculous.there is nothing abnormal about hooded tops.just that group of youngs are a little weird.
have a nice day!

Hi Cathy, like I said I tend to wear them indoors but I didn't refer to hooded tops as being abnormal. I would like to start wearing them outside but I have become accustomed to a particular way of dressing now and I'm comfortable with it and I guess hooded tops don't fit into that. Thanks for your thoughts. Andrew

I like the fact that they are so colourful! You can go for plain or you have many different designs. I also think that they can be quite expensive to buy. I'm wearing one now as I write actually and yes the hood is up, all nice and snug! Andrew

Ah! You are like me then! I too wear hooded tops indoors with the hood up! I only ever do this during the winter months though. I feel all cosy and snug when I have the hood up. I think the press are having a field day with putting hoodies in a bad light. I guess that's why most people tend to pass judgement on the hoodie! I'm not one of them I might add! I think the material on hooded tops is quite thick and they are quite heavy too! Still, I have several which are my favourite tops! Andrew
