Im having a hard time letting my child drink a glass of water everyday. My six year old son always have many reasons before drinking his water or not at all if he wanted to. Is it because it doesn't taste like soda? My son prefers to drink soda rather than pure or distilled water. But I still force him to drink lots of water everyday. What about you? do you feel the same when you were a kid? or do you experience it with your kids?

Of course if you give your child soda he will not want plain water, but soda is not good for children. If they drink the soda first and then the water this can make them sick to the stomach.
When I was a kid I worked so hard all the time that I would be glad to get water, and I was never allowed soda until I was seven and then only a little bit on very special occasions, maybe 3 times a year. I did not feel bad about that because nobody else in the family drank soda in front of me. It was the same for everyone.
In modern times, I have seen some young mothers give soda to babies still on the bottle and this horrifies me because I believe this will make them addicted to sugar and prone to obesity when they are older. One mother I saw give orange soda pop to a baby only two weeks old. I don't think she meant to be a bad mother, but still I consider that child abuse.

This practice also decays their teeth, before they even come in. It is sad that what used to be a treat is now considered mandatory, like soda and treats.

Yes, Gerty and you are in a position to see the proof of this every day.
Welcome to myLot Hazel. I agree these mothers mean well, but despite their intentions, I firmly believe they are doing harm to their children. It is a matter of education. I would not want a mother to feel bad or guilty about having done this, only to stop doing it and to do better in the future. I know it is not easy being a mother.

Im not allowing my child to grow within him the habit of drinking soda. I always tell my kid that drinking soda is not good for his health. Each parent has their own way of disciplining their own children in terms of eating or drinking. We can't blame if some mothers give soda to their two-week-old baby. I think they meant no harm because its their child.

i dont or didnt find it hard to drink water when i was a kid.
and yes, for kids it has to do with taste but also colour.
try adding some food dye to your childs water to see if they will drink it. maybe let them add it themselves.
limit the amount of soda you have in the house - switch it for fruit juice maybe.
we werent allowed to drink much soda when we were younger and it is a practice i have continued.
if all else fails and you cant get your son off soda - try flavoured mineral water. it tastes very similar to soda but is not quite as bad for you.

He loves fruit juices. But i have to let him drink water after drinking fruit juices because of the sweet flavor. Somehow my son manages to drink water.

Hi hazeldesosa,
I am going through the same situation with my son. Now the winter season is going on and they don't feel thirsty. Everyday he brings back his water (which I sent in morning) from school without even touching it. In summer there is no problem for drinking water and he is drinking enough water but in winter he feels hard. At home I am forcing him to drink water otherwise it may make troubles in long run.

We will be having troubles in the long run if we will not teach our child to drink water. We have to start teaching our child to drink water even little by little. Somehow it will become a habit for them.

In my case, very hard! I don't like the taste of plain water even though I know that it's good for you. I wish they would come up with flavoured water or something. I guess it's good practise to teach children to drink water on a regular basis but as regards myself I don't bother with it, I drink lots and lots of tea instead! Andrew

You mean you dont drink water after having tea? What makes you drink tea instead of water? How it started, when you were a kid? Im now practising my child to drink water in a regular basis.

It is normal for small children to go for sweet ones.may be you should try to explain him the effects he would face by drinking lots of soda.try to make soda an villian and water as an hero by stating some side effects by showing some horrifying picture and tell him tat he would become like tat if he dont drink more water LOL .so the next time he would obviously go for water rather than soda.hope this works.gud day.

My son loves drinking pro biotic drinks but it cant replace water. So after he drinks pro biotic drink i let him drink water sip by sip. I'm trying not to let him drink soda anymore gradually but my husband drinks a lot of soda every meal. So i cant help it but see my son drinking together with his father.

I always loved water. My mom thought I was sick. If soda was not an option, he might learn to drink water. Let him squeeze a lemon or orange slice into his water.

Personally I can relate because I hate water. The only reason I drink it now is because it helps with weight loss and clear skin. But other than that, I would never drink it, unless maybe I was at the gym! They have little flavor packets that you can put in water that have no calories, etc that will make the water taste better for your kids. I wold defininely invest in that, or maybe make it some sort of game... whoever drinks the most water for the day, week, whatever gets the prize. Sometimes you have to reward your kids until they are old enough to really know the consequences for not doing something that their body really needs!

I think the children don't like to drink water because of water tasteless, don't like soda. Some children like to drink sweet water, you can add some sweet in it but not much. It's necessary for children drink enough water, it will be healthy for their growing.

Yes i tried putting some sweet on my son's water but it didn't work. He just threw up. I just have to explain why he needs to drink plenty of water so he will drink by himself. thanks for your advice.
