I was sipping a Vodka and Tonic with a twist of lime

in my garden last night. There was a slight breeze - the one we call a Christmas breeze - and it was so delightfully cool. Then I had a thought - one of those thoughts that may waft through your brain and then disappear forever but this one I clutched on to quite tightly. A mylotter has sent me an email about the uses of cucumber and it was very informative. So I thought about whether there were other uses for vodka. Although I had so much work to do, I there and then placed this research as my priority and googled the uses of vodka. Well, well well. Imagine you can use it to clean the grouting in your bathroom, clean your glasses, and mix with lavender to make a tincture (?) So many uses of vodka that I had never known or would ever have imagined. Well, aren't I stupid. I thought that it was just for drinking! Have you ever used something just for drinking and then found out it was used as a cleaning agent or some other thingy?

Besides water......coke...for cleaning battery cables....it's so acidy that it can burn off the corrosion! LOL....oh if you soak raisins in vodka and eat I think someone said 8 a day it's supposed to help arthritis......either that or drinking the vodka will make you forget about the pain!

@ Jo and Jill: I keep saying Mississipi but my daughter is in Tennessee for Thanksgiving and it is so cold. I am going to research arthritic pain for you two and see if something can help. Ther must be something apart from painkillers.

hi cynthiann wow cleaning grout,oh goodness if it takes dirt out of grout what does it do to our tummy's linings? I hear that coca cola will dissove lime deposits in glass vases, now again i wonder if it does that what does it do in our stomach's lining.?

I do not drink Coca Cola as doctor told me the same thing about 20 years ago. I did briefly consider the lining of my stomach. But then I only have 4 or 5 drinks at the most a week so it should be okay. My doctor friend said that oca Cola will dissolve the top layer of a tooth in 24 hours.

Well who would've thought? It's always nice to find common bought items can be used in many ways. That isn't to say that I think you buy Vodka, oh I'm going to shush you know what I mean! I don't drink, so I didn't know that Vodka could be used in those ways. Very nice to know though, and it's always great to find some more cost efficient alternatives for daily chores, or just anything really!

In moderation! We never get gifts like that, regardless that we don't drink, it's just not common for anyone to gift that, unless it's for a celebration like A Wedding Or New Year. Oh and I mean in my family.

I just saw one in my jam book for vodka - preserved mushrooms. Add lemon slices, carraway seeds and top up with vodka.

Hello, Cynthiann. Well, in my book, vodka has only one use - mixed with lemonade, ice and lime, it makes its way down my throat, producing feel good factor on the way. My husband has other ideas, though. We have a motorhome, and everywhere we go, we get window stickers for camp sites, camping clubs, etc. Tony sneaks some of my vodka to clean the windscreen before applying the stickers, as that way, they'll stay where they're put for ever. I'm not too keen on this practice, so I make sure he only takes the teeniest drop.

I never would of considered vodka to be used for anything other than drinking. I'll have to check that out. The grout in my bathroom is so so hard to keep clean. Wouldn't that be something if this was the solution to my problem? I do buy vodka because I make Kaluha with it but I could always take a bit out to experiment with other uses. thanks for the tip, cynthiann! I'll let you know if it worked like magic. ok?

Yes, my dear, let me know as I have no intention of wasting vodka on cleaning grouting in my bathroom I've never tasted Kaluha either. Thinks: I really need to get out more.

Yes I have. I even found a site and have used it. Crazy uses for Coca cola. I have used a recipe or two. http://www.members.tripod.com/~Barefoot_Lass/cola.html You might find it useful.

Yes, there are lots of things that have many amazing uses. For instance cola, coffee, vinegar, lemon juice, and other things. Simple and cheap things like baking soda (although I wouldn't drink it!) work wonders and are less harmful to the environment. Great topic, nicely written!

Yes, I have. Vinegar, Vegetable Oil, baking soda are used as cleaning agents. I have only used baking soda to wash my clothes in. It would leave my clothes feeling clean and soft like. I know what you mean because I have used baking soda before. I don't really want to use vinegar, I think that it will make my home smell funny.. I would just use vinegar for cooking only.

Coca cola can be used to clean toilets, remove rust stains, remove corrosion around a battery terminal, clean grime off a windshield, and all sorts of other stuff. Makes you wonder how on earth it can be safe to drink!

A doctor told me years ago that it would strip off the layers of a tooth so I do not drink it. My eldest son still does though unfortunately. Imagine a bottle of Coca Cola doing all that. I never knew that it could clean toilets though.

Are you asking about something originaly meant to be for drinking but then found other uses ? I have one which I used to think is for drink only but then later I discovered better option, simultanously with facts that drink is usefull for many others. The drink I talk about is good for making electricity, good for most of ways to wash whatever, is basic to "feed" plants, it can be a very good cooling agent, in certain conditions is a construction material ... and so on. Can you guess what is the drink I'm talking about ?

I drink quite a bit of diet coke and I am fairly certain that it can take the rust off batteries! I remember hearing that somewhere. So that probably isn't very good for my intestines. I want to purify myself in the New Year.

Aside from Coke cleaning old coins beautifully- as others have mentioned it is great for removing corrosion from metals- I have only ever used vinegar for cleaning windows and baking soda to clean the oven racks. As for the vodka, seems like a tragic waste to use it to clean grout, darn expensive way to go about a clean shower! I read that vodka is good for an aching tooth and all you need to do it allow the gum to absorb the vodka to numb the pain; that’s more like it, I may as well try that now...I don’t have a toothache but it sounds like a good preventative measure to me!
