The New York Times recent article on runaway Francisco Hernandez Jr's 11 day journey on the New York Subway system gives a chilling tale of apathy and indifference. Hernandez, a 13-year-old boy with Asperger's syndrome disappeared after school after a scolding from his teacher that was accompanied by a call home to his parents. Fearing further discipline he rode the New York Subways unnoticed by anyone, despite several flyers and news stories, in response to being asked what he thought that no one noticed him Francisco said, 'Nobody really cares about the world and about people.'
What do you think could've been done differently in this situation? Do you think Francisco is right in what he said?
