How often do you upgrade your computer?

Are you the type who's hands just itches when you hear of something 'new' or the latest in technology particularly computers? or are you one of those who only upgrade or change when the old computer is either dead or too slow to really be much of use of?
I am the type who don't really go for upgrades unless I could no longer use it properly or when it causes me to waste more time waiting than working.
How about you?

No, generally not. I typically use something until the end of time. My home built computer runs an Athlon 1.7GHz which came out in 2001. I have a Radeon 9600 video card from 2003 in it. The hard drive was yanked from an old computer I had built prior to this one. Even my mother board is from 2002.
So this computer is now at least 6 years old. Generally I try not to upgrade. The reason is because I've found that upgrading part by part usually doesn't show up as much of a difference in performance.
Sadly, sometimes I forget this, and have to learn the lesson over again.
Early this year, I only had 3 sticks of 256MB memory. Everyone told me how horrible this was, and that I needed more. So I stupidly purchased 3 sticks of 512MB Memory. Now having twice as much memory, there is absolutely no difference in performance.
Since, whatever computer I am likely to buy, will not support the old style memory in this computer, I might as well have burned the money. Total waste.
I am actually in the process of purchasing a computer now. But it will not be 'new'. I'll buy a computer that's only a few years old. Say a 2007-2008 model. My budget is $400-$500 dollars. I never buy the latest greatest, most power computer on the block. That's for NASA.

It's good that you can buy that inexpensive computer. Did you go on ahead with the purchase? Here in my country, seems everything is up and they no longer sell prior models that's why prices are at its peak. The cheapest one I've seen so far is around $800.00.
Thanks for the response! Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

I installed the system on my computer, which can upgrade itself, don't need me to upgrade.

I usually upgrade my system or at least some portion of it once every two years. Once 5 years, I will replace the older one with a new one. Given the current rapid growth and newer stuff coming, it is absolutely necessary to keep pace with technology. Else the computer cannot be used for taking advantage of latest programs and games.
Cheers!

Well, I never used to be bothered about this. I used to have a computer and it would become very old over the years and then I would just dispose of it and buy a new one! However things have changed now in that I do everything myself in terms of my own problem solving, my own upgrades and things like that. I took a course in computer maintenance and installation a couple of years back and I'm so grateful for having completed that course as I now know about the inner workings of a pc and everything. I love technology and I love gadgets although I'm not keeping up with all the latest gadgets coming out due to lack of finance, that's always the problem!. I make sure that my computer receives all the latest updates from the Microsoft update website and I check this every Friday. It's also my intention to build a pc from scratch, I haven't done this as yet but it's in the pipeline! I have 2 gigabytes of ram or memory in my system at the present time and the maximum amount of memory that my system can support is 4 gigabytes so I will be doing this in due course. The more memory you have the faster your system is likely to operate. I will never buy a brand new computer from a retail outlet again! I will forever build them from now on! Andrew

if we're talking about pc's and laptops, i usually just upgrade them when they don't work. i mean what's the point wasting money on a new computer when the other one is working perfectly fine? most of the time i'll just upgrade parts of it that need upgrading, not the whole thing.

I don't upgrade unless my computer is on it's last leg. I'm not really "techinally saavy" although I would like to learn more about it.

My hand itches when there is no improvement in technology but when I have money. Of course, money makes my hand itch and I am pretty damn sure that I buy some electronic item if not upgrading my computer. The next upgrade I am planning is buying another 2 GB of RAM for my laptop.
My desktop already reached a saturation point and upgrading it now is very costly. I am also very seriously considering a new mobile phone as I sold out my old one and life has become a lot difficult without it.

I only really upgrade my computer when it just becomes to unbearably slow to be of any use to me. But generally when I buy a new computer I make sure its's gonna last me a long time and every computer i have bought has lasted me 4 years before i have had to upgrade.

I am always interested in knowing what is new in the market. But I always take my own time in updating my system with the new toys. I may buy some of the soft wares that are absolutely important to my business activity. Otherwise I am of the opinion that we have not used at least half of the potential of the machines we have with us now.
