Hello! English exam is coming, I find I can't do it right, because I'm bad at grammar! Do you think the grammar is important? In Mylot, there are so many mistakes in someone's articles, I wonder know it happens common or not in English country. It's so boring!

We all know that grammar is important but here in mylot did not impose that so that members with a little knowledge of English will join.
I cannot aware of this even do I want to be fluent in English language. But we cannot avoid some errors or mistake sometimes. Even do those American people did not aware of this unless they talk fluently and those terms is understand by many...
There is acceptable terms that we should learn "Wrong grammar but correct meaning". I don't know if someone agree on this...?

I think grammar is very important. It can mean the difference in someone understanding you and not. If you are place an order and say you want only one when you wanted several then you aren't going to get what you want. And if you are giving directions and spell something wrong or say it wrong then you won't meet them cause they won't be at the right place. Why is it boring! You don't care to express yourself to another or make things known that you want?

hi Chiniona^^;;
i think your grammar is not bad at all. but anyway, yeah, grammar is important so we can understand easily and exactly what others want to convey. sometimes due to grammatical errors, it causes communication problems and misunderstandings. although everybody makes mistakes in grammar and even grammarians argue sometimes on which is more acceptable.
in mylot, we do have some grammar problems but as long as we can relate to what they are saying as a whole then it's not that affecting at all..
hope you can pass your English exam

grammar is very important. the schools here in our country teaches good use or proper use of grammar. however, on the net, it becomes quite okay when someone write with full of grammatical error anyway the importance here is the expression of thoughts, ideas and opinions and not grammar lesson. when you are study it is a must that you use correct grammar.

I would say that if you are sitting an English exam good grammar is a must if you want to pass! I did a freelance journalism course a few years ago and I was taught that although good grammar and proper use of the English language is very important what matters even more when submitting an article to an editor is the content. It is no good to have perfect grammar but lacklustre content. A rich article which keeps the reader interested from beginning to end is what will appeal to a publisher even though it may not be grammatically perfect; having said that, there is no excuse for spelling errors though!

Correct grammar is only important if you want people to think you are an educated person.
When you are reading posts with incorrect grammar, does your attention get jolted away from the subject? Do you ever stop reading a post because the grammar is so horrendous, you cannot decide what the person is attempting to say? I seldom finish a post with the first sentence that makes no sense.
In every walk of life, good grammar is held as a major standard for judging a person. Whether you are talking, posting, writing business or personal letters, you get your points across fast and clear if you have a command of good grammar.

Grammar is boring, but very important. People who have good grammar are seen as more intelligent and educated. I am a stickler for grammar. Many times, if reading an article or a forum post that has bad grammar, I don't respond or finish it.

In mylot, many people come from many places and English is not predominant in some areas and so you can find a lot of mistakes. And also, here English is not important but communication is. Mostly, language is for communication only. But once you can communicate your idea, it never really matters whether your language is grammatically correct or not.
Grammar is important for starters and academics. Language is more important and communication of idea is the goal.

Usually the people who fail more at grammar are the very own natives of that language. However, that doesn't mean that learning grammar is not important. If a person doesn't use well his or her own language, you can put yourself the goal of becoming better than a native, for example!
In the case of internet, usually is just that people is lazy more than they fail at grammar.

for me grammar is very important because when two persons are having conversation let's say they are chatting using yahoo messenger and these persons are of different nationalities and one of them is not good in grammar so the tendency would be their conversation will be a lot confusing...i admit that i'm not good in grammar but if you practice hard maybe in time it'll be more easy to be good in grammar..

Yes, I do think that grammar is important even though it is boring. I felt that way too when I was learning about it in school. But it makes up the structure of the English language. Without proper grammar it'll be hard to convey what you are trying to say. Imagine trying to write or say something without using the proper grammar. It'll be a bunch of gibberish, like some of the posts we might see on here. But then again, trying to say that it is common based on the discussions you see here on mylot is very incorrect. We have to take into consideration that this is an international site and that not all the member here have English as their first language. Therefore, it is understandable that we see posts with a lot of mistakes. But just because we see those a lot doesn't mean that we should also do it too. That just makes things worst.

My English is not that good and I often made mistakes especially in writing. As much as possible I want to correct my grammar but sometimes it is hard to do. As a non-native speaker it is hard to express my thoughts in English because sometimes I need to think and translate what I'm thinking to English. Mylot is a big help for me because I can practice my English here.

Yes grammar is important even though it is boring we do need to learn good grammar and check for spelling mistakes. There are lots of mistakes made here on Mylot because I think we are in a hurry and lots of time forget to read what we typed before we hit the post response. We should hit the preview response and check for mistakes.

Grammar is very important because one wrong grammar would definitely cause some misunderstanding between the reader and the writer. I'm not perfect in my grammar as well but I try to be very careful of my chosen words. Here in mylot they don't criticize people when something is wrong in the writers discussion because they, the admin, know that not everyone here is from an English speaking country. We on the other hand, mylotters including you, who understand the importance of grammar can practice and help others to improve their grammar without the discrimination. In that way, there will be more quality discussion to respond to and things would be very healthy here in mylot.
