Emergency run to the vet yesterday

Cookie, my rat terrier, is a digger. I guess she was digging in the wrong place yesterday morning because when I got out of bed she was there, as usual, but her face was all swollen. I called the vet and they said to bring her in. The vet thought something had bitten her and gave her a couple of shots.
All day she layed around and towards evening the swelling was down but she was so weak that I had to carry her outside to potty. She was so weak that I had to bring her water bowl to her. She couldn't go up the stairs to bed so the two dogs and I slept downstairs and I was beside her all night. I was so worried!
This morning she was able to go outside on her own so I think she'll recover. I don't know what happened to her but thank God for good veterinarians! She's still not eating but at least showed a little interest in a piece of cheese, a marked improvement from yesterday.
Has this ever happened to your dog or cat? It's so worrisome, I was so scared I was going to lose her.

Wow, your poor baby. I have had emergencies. but none like that - mysterious bites and all. I am glad she is showing improvement today..
I know how you feel with the exhaustion part. The last time I felt like that was because my female dog was giving birth and I worked the night before (3rd shift) she started labor around 11am- I called work and told them I would not be in that night - little did I know that she would take all day.. the last pup was hours before it would come. we thought we had lost it as she had some green discharge (not a good color to see come out of your dog) we brought her to the ER vet down the street- they took X-rays said there was one more. But said it was still okay. We went back home after a couple more hours of waiting.. I finally passed out laying next to her.. on the floor. My friend woke me up after about 20 minutes of sleep:) and we got the last pup. He was technically born on a different day than all the rest.
We were so worried about him- the others all had a jump on nursing and he was pushed aside a bit. We bottle fed him a little and he ended up being just fine but we ended up losing another one. In fact That pup,at their first exam and shots ended up weighing more than all the other pups. But I tell you I swore I would never have another litter again, because I had NEVER felt so TIRED.
I hope your baby is well on her way to recovery. What a scare!

I never knew that dogs could take that long to give birth! What an ordeal that must've been for both of you! Sorry you lost the pup, though, that's always such a heartache. You're lucky to have a vet down the street, mine isn't far but still takes 10 minutes to get there.
Thanks for your good wishes! Cookie just ate a little of my turkey sausage I made for breakfast and a little bite of my asparagus/cheese omelet. I made those because I know she loves them and two bites is better than none!

Nope, no idea but he said that now it's getting cold the spiders are going into underground burrows and that's probably what happened--she busted down the door of one of those burrows and the startled occupant bit her. I'm sure she won't be doing much digging, at least till next Spring when she forgets about the bite!

I'm so tired that I can't see any humor in it but if I can bring a smile to your face I'm glad. It's been a horrible 24 hours but I'm very grateful I still have my precious little dog.

Do not worry! Our languages are so different and sometimes we don't understand what the other is saying. Cookie is doing well and just ate something. Thank you for your concern!

Nothing like that has ever happened. My oldest was so sick when she was a tot that I thought she was going to die.... exhausted from some nasty virus I stayed awake for 3 days giving her an eye dropper of water every 5 min, monitoring her temp.

Well we love our kids no differently then we love our pets. Yes it was one of the scariest things I've delt with thus far with my kids. She is my oldest so after that any fever my kids have I worry that I will have the same problem. I don't care what kind of virus it is when they cannot talk and you can only guess even after going to a medical Dr of sorts.... still scary.

I had a cat come home with a huge paw...it looked like a cartoon character after it was blown up with air. I couldn't see anything so I took her to the vet and it turned out that she was having an allergic reaction to a bee sting. He gave her a shot and it went down. This same cat used to get a swollen upper lip for no reason that I could find so sometimes she had to get a shot for that...depending on how big the lip got. I'm glad Cookie is doing better.

Poor kitty! I had no idea that animals could have reactions to bee stings. Cookie often chases bumblebees so I'll be sure to watch for that.

Thank you, MM! She is back to normal now, at last. She was so miserable for a couple of days and still isn't eating very well but at least she's got her energy back and wants to play. What a scare they can give us!

haha, once bitten twice shy, next time she will shake with fear when face with whatever bitten her.
I hope you have taken the picture of her swollen face! Next time when she's naughty again, you can remind her of the swollen face. Anyway, she's recovering, just consider it as a state of involuntary weight loss!

She has one main spot where she digs and if this will stop her, I'll be happy. I don't mind her digging anywhere else but she's fascinated with trying to dig under the back porch! She's pretty smart, I bet she'll remember this lesson.

hi dragon54u you know what, I would be that a spider bit
your dog. My son got bitten on the face by a large spider
'and his face swelled up and he could hardly swallow and
was really weak for a couple of days. He went to our
doctor who gave hime some benadryl double strength tablets plus an IV of benadryl. the swelling went down in a day
or so and the throat swelling disappeared right after the
I.V. we dont even know what kind of a spider it was but it
sure made my son ill.

How awful for your son! I'm glad he's okay!
I was really worried it was a brown recluse spider, we have those here in Ohio. The vet said she probably dug into a spider's underground burrow. Those recluse spiders' venom eats your flesh and I was worried about that but the vet said he was treating her for that so not to worry.
She feels better, went outside on her own and ate a little bit. It will probably be tomorrow, at least, till she feels close to normal.
At least I'm no longer in Arizona where it could have been a rattlesnake!
