I live a few hundrd miles from anything you could really call a "city" but I would say if you want a "safe" place, choose a more rural area. SOmewhere in the midwest perhaps or in one of the northern New England states like New Hampshire. Dartmouth college in Lebenon, New Hampshire is an excelent school and located in a quiet part of the country, but still not so isolated that nothing is avaialable. It has all the advantages of both the smaller towns and of a city in one place.
You could also try Middlebury college in Middlebury, Vermont. It too is an excelent school located in a very rural state in a pretty small town (my brotgher got his master's degree there).
Vermont University in Burlington, Vermont is also pretty good and Burlington isn't really a bad city. It has a lot going on and is still fairly quiet and safe as cities go.
You don't really have to go to a city to get a good education and despite what you see on tv, most of our country is made up of small rural towns, there is a lot to be found in many of these ut of the way places, don't limit yourself to just our cities.

I believe my city Houston is one of thebest cities in the world. It can be fast like a big city or it can be small town like a rural town. Anything you may want to participate in is her. We have Broadway plays, Sports teams, the best medical center and universities but we also slow it down and live a quiet life if we wish. Houston is a great city.
If I had to live somewhere elese I think it would be Philadelphia I like the history, culture and the vibe.
