I have already cooked my dinner, and we have already devoured it. It is 1:30 pm in the afternoon. The men are sleeping their meal off, and I am sitting here entertaining myself.
We had cornish hens for dinner, as my family does not like Turkey. Of course, we garnished it with Mashed Potatoes, squash, breadstuffing, and cranberry sauce. We could've added alot of the other popular items, such as meat stuffing, but we don't like that, and the small little onions, which I think are tasteless.
I am sitting here waiting to visit with the rest of my family over my niece's house, which will be around 3:00.
While I am grateful for alot of things I have - family, a roof over my head, food to eat, heat, a car, and good friends - Thanksgiving is like another day to me. I am always grateful for these things, and I am always with family and friends, so what I do on Thanksgiving Day is no different for me than any other. And to be truthful, I'd llike to be doing something quite different. I'd like to be in Disneyland celebrating the day, or on a nice warm island...something different. I get tired of tradition..the same old tradition of sitting around all day long. I wouldn't even mind having the day to myself - taking a long walk, taking a nap..lol..but for the sake of family I repeat this tradition year after year.
Are you tired of tradition? Would you take the chance to dissappoint family, and say "hey, I'm out of here next Thanksgiving!"

I left my family years ago and that was for personal reasons. To me Thanksgiving is another day. I'll get the occassional text message saying happy Thanksgiving, but regardless when midnight hits it will be one more day in the history books. Do I have a actual tradition? Well no. George and I eat whatever we decide to cook which isn't and isn't always traditional eaither.

They say, you can pick your friends but you can't pick your relatives. So as wonderful as it is for some to be surrounded by family on this day, I understand it is not always the same for others. You do what makes you happy, and that's what is important...to make the day memorable for you!

If you love how you spend the day, that is good! You should always stick to what you love.

hi sweetchariot I see you are also in the US I am here in ca so thats why the time difference.its 10;39 in the morning on Thanksgiving day here and I am in a retirement center called Gold crest we had our celebration yesterday with turkey and stuffing and all the traditional trimmings. odd but when myson and I still had our own apartment my son started a new tradition for us, we started have cornish game hens instead of turkey and they were delicious too. well now we are homeless thats why I am stuck here and my son in gov. sponsored apt so he and his men roommates can look for work. bad economy here in Ca. I will go down to lunch at 11 am and am wondering onthe real day what we will be served as a lot of the staff are off for the holiday. I have beenhere one year exactly but would love to be able to get out of here
and back into an apartment with my son but he has to get a job a and so far it has not happened.but we are both okay and do have things to be thankful for, just being alive and have shelter and food to eat,we must be thankful, and each new day is a gift from God to be treasured any way.

As we get older, it should be only the simple things in life that make us happy...while your own apt. may be nice, think of all the work you would have to do, to keep it up. This way, all you have to do is take care of yourself, make friends with those that are there, read a good book, take a walk, and smell the roses. SOmetimes it is good to have very little in our later years, so we can appreciate the little things, and become in tune with the powers to be.

The best time to go on the web is when you feel like it. I'm here all the time and at all odd hours. I'm now arranging to get my internet line into my room rental so that I can go on at night when I wake up. Its an interesting and rewarding thing to do and if you can do it anytime and that is anytime - why not ?

I like the tradition of Thanksgiving. I think so many people take advantage of the fact that they have their family so close to them and do not take the time to enjoy time with them. I live 300 miles from my family and unfortunately, I wasn't able to go home for Thanksgiving, my daughter is with her father this Thanksgiving, so it is just me and my 3 year old son. I made dinner for just the two of us, but he doesn't realize that this is a holiday, it's just another day for him.
Traditions do sometimes become old, I do agree with you about that. I guess the key is to just find something to make it new in away, do something a little different, like you suggested, Disneyland, etc. Maybe you should try doing that sometime, I'm sure it would be a fun way to spend your Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes, once my Mother passes on - she is now 89 - I will be looking at starting my own tradition. I love family, but I see them all the time - Thanksgiving day is no different for me. We don't have family that come from all over, so it tends to be the same thing as any other normal day, except we eat far too much..lol

Hi sweetchariot, is it still only the afternoon there on Thursday and our Australian friends are already on Friday but tucked up in bed. It's evening here but I'm hanging round to do a bit of work meeting some Arabs.
Surely you can break a tradition and leave them all to it and have a day to yourself. Ask them to send you away next year.

Wouldnt that just syke them out if we could bring ourselves to bust their bubble like that?!! i guess thats why they call it tradition because we cant bring ourselves to do anything different with it. once when hubby was alive, we went to Vegas for xmas and took my youngest and his girlfriend with us. it was the most fun i've had on xmas

Hi Sweetchariot,
Well. we just got home from one of my brother's house. He was sweet enough to invite hubby and I for dinner. You see hubby has been out of work for 2 1/2 years and I'm disabled. I'm from a family of 9 siblings. Only 1 brother lives out of state. I used to live in California after I got married the first time. The rest of my Family stayed in Florida. I missed 30 years of Thanksgiving with my Family and now that both my parents are gone, I've had 1 Thanksgiving dinner with all my siblings. So having even a small gathering means a lot to me. But like you, most of my siblings are tired of the old traditions to some degree. I just feel like tradition keeps families closer. The more you let go of the traditions the more you let go of family. I would have given anything to have had my twin sister and older sister to sit with after the turkey dinner to chat with while the guys either watched Football or play some kind of made up game. But I had a good day with my Brother and his fiance, 1 nephew and hubby. So Happy Thanksgiving!!
Leenie

Sounds like it was a very relaxing day and nice to see that you had at least one family member with you! SOmetimes those kind of holidays are the better ones.
After I posted this discussion, I went over my nieces home where there were at least 10 people , with 5 others who came over later. We listened to my nieces two kids screaming and running all over the place, and everyone talking at once...lol...I love the kids, but 6:00 p.m. came around, I was ready to come home.
