I Miss My Old Life

Went out today and was sitting in a cafe waiting for a friend. The cafe is situated inside a mall and so the whole place is decorated for Christmas. It was lovely to look at, but it made me feel blue because it made me realize that I miss my old life. I miss working and reaping the benefits of working, which is getting paid. My salary was always enough for my needs and I could splurge every now and then on myself. I have been out of work since March and now it hurts to realize that I cannot even afford those potato chips I so often craved at work. I miss being able to travel and not worry about who is taking care of my mother of if the house is clean. I miss not worrying about preparing for lunch or dinner since I am not really into cooking. What about you? Do you miss your old life or are you content with what you have right now?

I'm sorry to hear that you're out of work. I know (from experience) that it can be soul-destroying, especially when there's no work to go around... In the UK just now, youth unemployment is at 20% - and that's just the average! There are places where it's much higher. I'm one of the lucky ones, but I don't think people should necessarily have to feel "lucky" to be employed. I do miss aspects of my old life (as a student); mostly the drinking and sleeping. Now I can only do the former in moderation, and the latter at weekends! I try to look on the bright side, though - it's as you say - work brings in money, which can be exchanged for essental goods and services. Hopefully, I'll be able to compromise on the hours in future, and spend more time with my other half; until then, I'll get my head down and just learn to accept that life isn't a cakewalk...

hello there, not only it can soul destroying but can also be degrading of one's intelligence if the person has been out of work for a long time.it can be very hard to come back when you're out of work for a long time. it ain't easy to start climbing again when you have stepped down for a while.

I can always go back to work. Its just that I can't because I am taking care of my mother who has cancer. She is at that age where she doesn't really trust strangers so I really can't get a maid or nurse to help me out. She doesn't even trust me sometimes, but I have to understand and just be here for her physically and emotionally.

Hello anne25penn, I don't miss my old life, because I am a born again Christian - I wish I would have made this change years ago and knew then what I know now, it feels so good to live righteous and to serve my LORD.

I know that must be rough. I am lucky. I am happy in my life. I did give up my job to be home with my kids. So I miss the extra income. But I found work from home. It is MUCH less to be sure. But all in all content. Hope things look up soon

First of all I want to say I'm sorry that you lost your job. There are so many people that are jobless and I wish things were better for everyone. To answer your questions I have to say that I'm content with my life. I'm happy and very fortunate. I have a full time job and will be going back after 6 weeks of maternity leave next week. I wish I could stay home with my son, but my husband will be taking on that roll and going back to school. We're very fortunate to have the opportunity for him to do these things. I hope that you are able to find some happiness in your new life if you aren't able to get your old life back.

I think it would depend on a person's current circumstance. Me personally, I am thankful for a good husband, 2 beautiful daughters and a wonderful step-daughter. My youngest daughter has autism so with the many stressful moments that can bring on I do find myself wishing I could go back 10 years to a simpler time. I wouldn't and couldn't trade what I have, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to escape it once in a while. Good luck to you, and I wish you all the best.

I am only twenty one and I know that there's still more in this world that I have to experience. Nevertheless, there were also things that I missed in my earlier days---my Childhood days! I miss the days... -when all I have to worry about are my parents' sermons. -when all I do is play. -when I go home from school, there's a new toy waiting for me. -when I can play with dirt and it doesn't look bad. -when people say that I'm cute. -when I sneak on eating chocolates and candies! -when I don't have to worry if I have something to eat the next day. -when I don't have to study more than what I should learn. -when I'm still innocent and able to ask hundreds of questions a day! I will always miss that...my childhood days!

That is my childhood... when all I have to do is play. when all I have to worry about is my parents' sticks. whenever I'm full, I'm okay. when I came from school, there's a new toy waiting for me. when I don't have any problems to solve. when I don't have to worry if I will have something to eat the next day... ...there is so much to miss, there's more! I wish I could be a little girl... Once again!

I miss my old life, being a student. I jst miss everything, even the long-ending exams. Most especially, I miss my friends and our goofy stuffs. Just mss hanging out and getting trouble. Both the laughter and tears as a student can never be forgotten.

i am presently contented with my life now. i have work, i have children, i have a good husband. t have everything i am thankful to God for. however, i am worried as a mother, on how would nurture my children to grown as God wants them to grow. that is my worry now. I am praying to God to help me. if i may add: allow God to come in to your heart and pray just like i did now, that God may take your worries away and that you find work again, in His time.

I always look ahead and seldom miss my old life because i believe life will be better than before.Though i might go through hard time like you now do,i'll positively find ways to struggle against it and start a new life.Sometimes i miss my old friends,so i decide to have a small reunion with them from time to time.

I am contented with my life now. I have a happy family and my time is spend on them most of the time. I already "graduated" from my old life when I was just carefree. I have forgotten going out with friends or splurging on many unnecessary things. I buy things which are really very important for the house or family. I go out with my family most often or if I am with friends, my daughter would always tag along. I love this kind of life. It's a fulfillment.

Why don't you have your work anymore? Maybe you can look for work if you really miss working outside your house.

Yes, I miss my old life of abundance. But that's past. I had to think realistically to live my life right now and face my life tomorrow. Although poor now, I want to stay happy.

hello annepenn, you're not alone and not the only one, probably not the one who had worst too i left my call center life about two years ago and i wasn't even a veteran then, just went lazy and stop. and now, what has this led me too? first,my phone is broken, then, my pc is broken, with not much funding for me to pay for it. i miss work because i get to pay bills and buy groceries and give some money for my brothers, which they are so happy about.

The answer is abosolutely yes. I alway think about the question, if i still was a little girl like several years ago, i would be a happy kid without any problems. In that times, my family very poor and my parents can't afford many things, despite of that, i still feel happy. Now the situation of my family is much better, but i think the happiness is much less than before since we have many things have to be taken into consideration.
