Martina Hingis started her tennis career at such a young age and even ascended to the top echelon of tennis. But at young age, she was hampered by injuries and cut her tennis career short. I will be missing her style of play, its varieties, her finesse, and the way she plays like she's playing chess, though she lack of power and weak serve. She play 12 Grand Slam finals but win only 5 of them. If she conquered her weaknesses and still playing today, how many Grand Slam titles does own now?

She is one of my favorite players. She would have had a Grand Slam(winning all four slams in one year) when she was 16 if her horse she was riding during the French Open that year had not fallen causing her to be injured; horseback riding is one of her favorite pastimes. Even with the injury she made it to the final and almost won it. This fact is seldom mentioned and most, even her fans, are not aware of it. She did win the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the U. S. Open that year. If she had not had her ankle and foot injuries, I think she would have won several more slams. She was the first, and for a long time the only, player to beat both Williams sisters in back to back matches and she did it in the heat of the Australian Open one year.

I agree with you stealthy. At such young age, she's really a talented player. Of course, she almost won a calendar Slam that once achieved by Graf in 1988 (considered Golden Slam because of Olympic Gold). Though she come up short of winning French Open both in 1997 and 1999, she's an all-around player. But what I don't know is that she injured her ankle in horseriding before French Open 1997. And as she plays a counterpunching game, her injury really took its toll. I don't believe she can't fight with power players nowadays well in fact she can if not for her injury. She beat William sister at Australian Open but fell to Capriati (which was done also by Justine Henin at US Open 2007, on her way to the title). Her intelligent play and smile on court will be truly missed...

I think I should add here that the feat of beating both the Williams sisters in back to back matches was also emulated by Kim Clijsters in 2009 US Open on her way to the title, so Justine Henin is not the only one to do that among the current crop of players. Now, since both players are comming back together in full flow to womens tennis circuit, I am sure, it will no more be a cake walk for the Williams sisters anymore to win Grand Slams, in fact I believe it would be hard for them to win even a single Grand Slam singles title in the comming year.

she did quite well at a very yong age. i guess recently she tried to make a comeback and also won a GS a few years back. every player has its peak period and she didi well to reamin no 1 for a couple of years, no one can expect to be on top for ever as tennis requires some very exhaustive workout. she probably thought that she can not do better that this and hence she retired some years back. anyways, she was a good player.
