Children on their bicycles with no lights at night

Tonight i saw children as well as adults on their bikes with no lights and no reflecting tops. The thing is some people do not even ride their bikes in a straight line or in a safe manner.Thankfully i saw a police woman stop the group of people on their bikes and i think from what i could gather this was not the first time, but i think it will be their last time.Do people not understand that they are going to get seriously injured, killed and that the driver is the one who has got to live with that if they are the one who crashes into them.

This incident I guess happened in your country. But here in my country, the Philippines, that is a normal thing to see. Even people on motorcycles ride their bikes sometimes even without any lights in the back at least, not caring about their safety. And most of the times they have a backrider with them and they both don't wear a helmet! This mentally of uncaring for their safety I think it is because of poverty. "Bahala na Diyos" (it's up to God) is the common utterance of these people in effect leaving up to God their safety of their lives. Due to poverty, these people can't buy or don't care to buy a helmet for their safety because if they have money, they rather spend it on food.

Seriously it was a Good thing that a police woman stopped them, and asked about this, as riding without any lights on at night is not a Good thing at all, and rather dangerous for sure. I know for Safety reasons since most Bike riders I know have a hard time riding a bike in a straight line without weaving from time to time it is good for other cars to be able to see them. I also think bike riders at night should wear some forms of reflective clothing as well. Hopefully somehow these people will learn and follow the rules a little better from now on.

This is always happening around where I live and it is very dangerous as when in my car, these cyclists are very difficult to spot until I am on top of them. It is not only children, in fact is is mostly adult cyclists who are not giving a good example to the kids. If I was in my car without lights, I would soon be stopped and given a ticket - I think the same thing ought to apply to cyclists to protect them against themselves. - Derek

There is not much more terrifying thing for a car driver to face than an out of control bike rider which comes up unexpectedly in the dark. I hope the police wrote tickets so that the riders will feel motivated to either get off the road or get the correct safety equipment.

I see all the time chilren and adults not following proper bike saftey all the time! If it isn't riding at night without reflecting lights or a light on the bike it is sometime else! Riding the wrong on a one way street, riding on the wrong side of the street or road, not stopping for stop signs or lights and crossing streets in the middle of traffic! Then there was the 5 yr.old boy who was following a garage truck and didn't listen to the driver of the truck, when he yelled at the kid out his window not to follow him and ended getting hit by the truck when the driver didn't see him! The boy wasn't seriously hurt but he should of know better and listened to the driver! Parents aren't teaching their kids proper bike safety, supervisoring young children on bikes and not being good examples when they ride bikes! It is crazy and hope something will change or there will be more accidents!

I do not understand why people ride without a helmet and no lights. I also hate it when people do not wear light color clothing at night. I know that tonight my husband and I went to a tree lighting ceremony and after the ceremony many people were crossing whereever they felt like it and twice my husband came so close to hitting someone because we did not see them. I wish people would realize that they could get hurt. I know when we were kids we were not allowed to ride without a helmet and we had to have lights on our bike. We also had to make sure we knew the rules of the road and be able to recite them.

Hello jj. It is not safe for children to ride their bikes with no lights at night, especially on roads where the traffic is very crowded. But you see, bikes are not equipped with lights on the front, which is not good and safe for the evening riders. I hope that bike manufactures will install lights when they make it for the safety of the riders.

I think it is just a case of not thinking ahead. Remembering there are serious and sometimes dangerous consequences can be difficult. Glad they were stopped in time!

It is sad to note that many bikers are doing this. This is also very common in our area. It is really dangerous and I know that its really a problem with car drivers considering that they are very difficult to notice along the road most especially if the road is not well lighted. I hope that this people will understand the need for safety and will put some reflectors and even lights on their bikes the moment they travel along the road at night.

hi jugsjugs yes they are a real hazard to themselves and anyone driving a car.a few years back my friend Nelda was driving us back home from our diabetes meeting, and a guy on a bike that had no lights on at night came dashing out right in front of us and my friend Nelda had to actually drive up onto the nearby sidewalk to keep from hitting him. we could have killed the idiot and he just kept right on going. By the time we got back off the sidewalk the left front tire on my side was going down, something on the sidewalk had cut a big gash in the tire. lol what a night all because the idiot refused to put lights on his bike and also wore black clothing so he was not easily visible at all. She had to find a tire shop that was still open and buy a new tire. but like she said at least we did not hit him and possibly kill him or hurt him badly. my son rides a bike at night but he wears light colored clothes has a strong light on his bike and is careful in traffic at night. the man was an adult so he should have known better than that.

No, people don't think and I'm so glad that group was stopped. Many people ride bikes where I live and our deputies will stop you if you don't have a reflector and a light...even during the day. We also have a problem with people riding around on golf carts, which is not a problem during the day, but some of them have no lights and they're out there at night, too.

There are places with bicycle lanes but I haven't seen one in our place. I think that it would be safer to have that so that the flow of traffic for cars will not be disrupted. I have seen some of these youngsters biking in groups and they occupy a bigger space of the road. Sometimes they go slow which really disrupts traffic. Most of the bikes I see here have reflectors pasted on their bikes but I don't see a lot of bikers on the highway though -- they choose to ride on smaller roads.

Where I live people use bikes even more than cars, so they're pretty educated on using lights at night. The bad thing is that most of them will go down the sidewalk bothering the pedestrians. I think it's dangerous too to go in a fragile vehicle like a bike without making yourself noticeable for cars. You can get a big damage while the car would just get a few scratches.

No they don't as they will blame the Driver at the end of the Day The thing is they are playing with their Life's being so reckless and they will not learn till it is to late I hate driving in the Dark because you never see the Bike till the last minute specially when they are wearing dark Clothes as well as no lights

Hi jugsjugs, There is no doubt but that safety has to be the number one issue here. I'm not sure what can be done to stop it outside of giving a ticket to every person who don't have a light on their bike. The bike should also be impounded until such time as they get a light for it. If the driver of a car hits the bike and injures or kills the person riding it, it may not be his/her fault but it is still something that would trouble most people for the rest of their lives. I think issues fines and taking the bikes might be the only answer for most people. Blessings.

Hmm, that is a serious situation but I know there are some people who think that its okay. Im glad to hear that there is someone patrolling the streets to make sure that everyone is safe. Take care.

Even with the snow on the roads they are still out there on their bikes with no lights.I think that this is a big problem where i live and soon there will be a serious accident. It seems that there are also alot of people that do not ride their bikes properly as well.I wish there were alot more police about as that way they as i know would stop people from being on their bikes if they were not kitted up with lights as well as the people who did not ride them properly.

Prevention is better than cure as they say. With a lot of authority figures patrolling the neighborhood, people would think twice of doing something reckless or dangerous.

Perhaps they didn't figure they would be out after dark. I wonder if you could call the radio and/or television station in your area and see if they would make an annoucement about putting lights on people's bikes for after dark riding. Pretty important stuff and I think you sold it on it and you can sell it on the phone as well.

As far as I am concerned for my daughter, I don't like to let her ride her bike at all after it is dark. And, we live on a court where there is absolutely no traffic at all save for our neighbors who all know that there are a lot of kids on our street. However, as far as my husband and I go, we do ride our bikes in the evening and sometimes at night. We are both also fully equiped with reflectors and we will only ride in the bike lanes. I really don't think it is good that adults don't teach their children bicycle safety.

I think you are right as i would never allow my children out on their bikes when it started to get dark.I drive a car and to be honest i am only one of a few people that am always slowing down when i see a person on their bike on the road, where as there are alot of other drivers out there that drive fast as well as would not be able to brake in time and with no lights on the bikes they are hard to see.I think that alot of parents should keep their children off their bikes at night time if they do not have any lights on them.
