I also want to learn to play guitar even if I know is very late for me to learn it. I still saving so I can buy a guitar. I think it is a good hobby too and it is good too to learn new things. Your on the right age to decide what you want in your life don't let your father stops you to learn new things.

Hear hear! I could send a dozen links on how music aids productivity in the workplace and enables lateral thinking ... but it's quicker to say, everyone needs A HOBBY!

Well mridula, even my father said, that a musical instrument is a waste. At that time since I could not make any extra money, I was not able to learn any musical instruments, but now that you are in mylot, you can earn a little money on this site, and buy the guitar by yourself.

Of course the guitar isn't going to advance your career directly, unless you're planning on becoming a musician, but it can boost the quality of your life and maybe reduce the stress of work. Doesn't your father ever do anything for fun and relaxation? That's what your guitar will be for you, except it will also be an outlet for your creativity.

Write a research article on the positives of owning a guitar and those that have been successful through owning a guitar. Also, make a pros and cons list as to help better articulate to your dad what all the positive things that can come out if it are, and also to make him understand that you understand that there are negatives that come with it as well. He probably just want's to make sure that buying a guitar is something that you really want to do, not just a fad. A lot of stuff people buy nowadays a month later just turns into dust in some corner somewhere. Make him really KNOW that you want a guitar I guess is the best I could say. Do anything in your power within legal reasoning to prove to him how much you want the guitar.

Wouldn't it be quicker just to say, "Dad - you've got plenty of hobbies, so why can't I?" Not everyone wants to play golf. Not that i'm suggesting this is how dad spends HIS free time, but ...

Professionals who play an instrument but don't have a musical career ... let's see now ... there's Tony Blair, George Bush, Condoleeza Rice, Richard Gere, Woody Allen, practically everyone who's ever flown to the moon for NASA ...
Your dad's right! It's a waste of time! Get outta there!!!! (Well, he's right about the first two, anyway )

Wow, not cool at all DAD! LOL. If he wont buy you a guitar then why not get a part time job or start saving up from your allowances and buy your own guitar. You will get a great feeling from knowing that you worked hard to buy it, and it will have more of a sentimental value to you. Its awesome though that you want to buy a guitar and start playing, dont give up on your dreams.

If it is your own money that you earned yourself, it should not be his decision. I would understand if he had a problem with you buying a guitar because he did not want you to spend his money, but if it is your money, then it's not his business what you buy, if you really really want it.

Well you have to tell him that every professional was a beginner at sometime and you should tell him how important it is for you.
