save a bag, save the world!
so say's sm's campaign slogan for their m.o.b. day. for those who have been living under the rock or are not familiar, (i do expect that foreigners who haven't stayed in the philippines, visit the 'philippines' topic here in myot or am i kidding myself?) sm is the largest shopping chain in the country. their sm mall of asia is the third biggest shopping mall in asia.
now every wednesday, sm has a m.o.b. day, this actually stands for bring my own bag! (don't know who come up with the campaign name but it needs reworking in my opinion!)customers shopping at the supermarket in sm is encouraged to bring their own bags when doing their groceries. customers are also encouraged to use the sm greenbags and customers are rewarded 2 points in their sm advantage card (another different marketing ploy, which i truly like). this is in tune with the mall's advocacy in saving the environment. i myself do my groceries around sm's wednesday m.o.b. day to support sm's undertaking. instead of the usual plastic bags, they put your grocereis in your own bags, in the sm greenbag, or in brown paper bags.
i truly believe that this is a good measure on the part of sm but i wish that they do more. don't get me wrong, it is more commendable since the company is encouraging their customers to pitch in and rewarding them for it but common, i mean we are talking about a multi-million company here. i just think that if sm puts their corporate minds into it, they can come up with better and bigger ways to save the environment (do i hear a mulit-billion contribution mr. henry sy?)
anyway, what are your thoughts about this one fellow mylotters? i think it's great that sm has their wednesday m.o.b. day but i wish they do more.
cheers!!!

I do agree with you that SM's environmental campaign is commendable. For others who don't know, SM does buy recyclable materials from time to time. They post notices on their bulletin boards when they do so.
I also agree with you that SM and other similar establishments can do more. One popular mall in Quezon City is not environmentally friendly because they forced their food court tenants to use styro plates whenever possible. I wish they will stop using styro plates as Jollibee and McDonald did. As for SM, aside from making cash contributions to worthy environmental causes, how about thinking of ways to really reduce the waste their malls generate? Maybe, just like what they did in SM-Baguio, they should think of ways to make use of natural light and cooling systems to reduce their carbon trace.

hi eichs1!
great points you have there. definitely, there is more that can be done by these malls to be more environment friendly. noticed what you said about jollibee and mcdonalds, they don't use styro packaging anymore except for take-outs. hopefully, other establishments will follow suit and do something commendable to protect and save the environment.
cheers!!!

It is a very good act in part of SM and all the shopping malls doing this..
but rustan's po talaga ang nauna..
Sta Lucia East also have their version of MOB...
hope all supermarkets will have their own version of this to avoid using of plastics which are the main reason in excessive flooding..

hi elisse27!
welcome to mylot!
it's great that the other malls are doing the same. the effect can only result into something good for the environment. honestly though, i think these big corporations can and should do much more for the environment.
cheers!!!

Yeah I am SM buyer too and though I seldom or do not shop on Wednesdays I still practice getting my own shoopping bags to minimize their used of the plastic bags. I think this is a very good effort for them to minimize the proliferation plastic bags. I think that is the best solution to lessen the garbage problem we are having in our place. Although the impact of it is miniscule compared to the problem at least it will lessen the garbage problem.

agree with you there rsa101.
it is a good effort on sm's part to minimize the garbage problem but really, there is so much more that they can do as a corporation. of course, us private citizens can also do a lot more but this small step is meaningful and it definitely will contribute into savign our environment.
recently noticed that sm now has biodegrable plastic bags. not so sure how those thing work since plastic has always been non-biodegrable. anyway, i think sm as well as other commercial establishments should shift to paper bags.
just a thought.
cheers!!!

what's up mate?
rustans eh?!!! good selection there especially with their imported items but a bit pricey for me. didn't know they had paper bags before. either way, as long as these establishments are doing something good for the environment all is well.
cheers!!!
