Feeling bummed out

I needed a laptop and as they are very expensive over here I asked my Grand Dad in USA to get one for me. I had a budget of US$700 so I wasnt looking at something very high tech. I found a Sony Vaio NW240 series with a 15.5 screen and 4GB ram and 320GB Hard Disk from Best Buy. Its price was 705 incl tax and had Win 7 preloaded. I was stunned as a basic, even low end Vaio starts here at $1000 minimum, I told my Grand dad to get it for me. He bought it last month and gave it to one of my relatives who is coming here in a few days to give it to me. I was very excited and everything. But today I opened the Best Buy site and now there is a higher end Vaio FW510 with 16.4 inch screen and 500GB HDD but most importantly dedicated 512MB ATI Graphics for the same price! I am really feeling bummed out for my purchase. But it isnt really possible that I could get this as the person who is bringing the laptop has already left States. So I guess I should settle with what I got. What would you have done in my position to console yourself?

It happens you don't have to really feel bummed, you just learned that before making a purchase you should first research and then patiently wait for some alternatives then compare and then buy.Well, You don't have to feel bummed because electronic market is very fluctuating, everyday something new and competitive comes out or the company launches it sometime after so that products launched before it by the same company have a sale. Not only for laptops, it is for pc, mobile and every electronic. To think positively just think the product you have bought comes to you some days early than the product you saw, so wht things you would do with that, would not be like that if you would have bought the second laptop.

First of all I wouldn't have gone with a Sony. Their batteries are fire hazards and they over heat easily. I'm not sure if they resolved the issue or not.
I would be thankful for what you are getting. At least its something, and you can learn from your mistakes so you know what to look for later on down the road when the one you'll recieve no longer works. So just be thankful...

I have had several friends and cousins with Sony Vaios and not one of them have failed. They were just as tough as my old IBM thinkpads which were the most reliable things in the world. I wouldnt say that for the Dell laptops that I have used like the inspiron 15 which gets hotter than boiling water. HPs have been fine too but the quality of the materials they use is pretty substandard

This is quite common in electronics. The prices of electronics are going down every day. Usually Sony Vaio, always, come in the best buy, and even my sister who was in USA recently got one at a best buy site, and the next day she found the same lap top for $50 less, when she checked up, it was found that the color of the lap top was pink, and that is why it was selling for about $50 less. Do not feel sad, as these thing happen in life regularly.

I will be more than happy with what I have right now since everyone of us can afford to buy desktops and laptops in this highly technical world. After a year or two, I will probably sell it to my friend or give it to my relative and buy a newer and trendier laptop.

In the world of computers that happens all the time.
If that can console you, I worked in a computer company, and usually when a computer that seems to be have "high features" is cheap, means that the model is not that good and has many failures, so they have to sell it cheap to make for it.
I hope the one you got works well

I hope so. I have read several reviews of the model I bought and it turns that it works perfectly. But the newer higher spec one has no reviews yet so it is possible that it may have some problems but being a Vaio that is not very likely

My sister promised me a laptop after I got hired and i was supposed to w8 for it for about a year before she could carry it home with her when she visits us. When i took my masters though, I immediately found the need to buy one, asap hence, during the black friday sale, she bought me one... She was lucky enough to get me an fw510 but it wasn't easy.. She was already w8ing in line outside a bestbuy outlet at 4am in the morning! She had to ask 3 salespersons before one finally relented to check their stocks... each one of the 1st two persons she asked told her the unit has already sold out. They even kept checking the online store for availability. The last sales lady though, had the sense to check their stores at the back and voila! The lady came out carrying 2 sealed boxes (black and silver) and she bought both! So my advice to you is that, the next time you buy a laptop, wait for the black friday sale and tell your grandpa to pester the salespeople till they yield! ;p Goodluck!
