Recently I developed a new interest, that is ikebana. Ikebana is a Japanese art of arranging flowers. I am trying to learn abut it by searching article or blog online. I can't afford to go to a real class. I have not been able to find materials in the local stores yet. I got few online, but it is expensive.
Please friends help me with ideas where can I find materials for arranging flowers in a reasonable price.

Hi Sweetlady10, I had never heard of ikebana until your discussion so I looked it up. I think it sounds very interesting and serene. Japanese art seems to me as very focused on nature and balance as the article mentions about ikebana. How did you become interested in it? It seems that all material must be organic and follow a triangular sort of parameter? I'm not sure if that is what I understood it to be but if it is true, using twigs and grass etc, and flowers why is it so expensive? Is it the flowers themselves? I enjoyed the minimalistic approach the art has in arranging its flowers.

Thanks for your response. I became interested when I saw the ikebana pictures, because they are very beautiful.
Vases are expensive for me, like near $100.00, when I saw it online. Not to mention the fresh flowers to buy every time, and as a learner I would need lot of them and various kind also to do the experiment. As I live in apartment, I don't have my own garden. So I was looking if I can find at least vases in low price.

Have you tried thrift shops perhaps or second hand stores? I can see from the pictures, the containers that the arrangements are in appear to be expensive but maybe while learning, it would suffice until you find an outlet that would allow the vases to be purchased at a reasonable price. Maybe you could speak to a florist as that they probably throw away flowers that they can't use after a certain period of time just to practice with. I hope these aren't silly suggestions. It does sound like an expensive hobby to invest in but it appears to be worth it as the arrangements are quite unique and beautiful. I would be interested in knowing how you do with it. Good luck!

Is there a Dollar Tree near where you live? They have a pretty good floral department and the best part is that everything costs $1!
