Medications masking problems not curing

my hubby was feeling sick and i was telling him to try some of the otc meds i had gotten recently (i was stocking up on sale) and he was like "why? they dont cure anything just mask it" and it got me thinking.. MOST prescription meds are the same and yet we dont think its silly to take them! i mean other than like chemo or something most medications like for allergies, depression, etc etc just lighten/mask the symptoms so we can stand ourselves and live normally but in most causes once you stop you are back where you were.. (except for the few that are having temporary depression and get therapy to learn how to deal with it without meds) so why think its so silly to mask cold/flu symptoms yet take depression and allergy meds? (which he does) i take a lot of medications and i admit i dont like to so i dont run to the otc meds for every little thing but i dont think of it as stupid to do so.. sometimes your body heals better when its not having to deal with other things.. my mom was told after her surgery that refusing pain meds just puts more stress on her body to where it will heal slower where as yeah the meds mask the pain but it helps the body relax and focus on healing better.. whats your opinion?

I guess I never thought of it that way but you are right! I take meds for arthritis and sinus and they don't cure it......just take care of the pain but on the other hand the pain is what can make you feel like you can't go on...they have a pain clinic here....to help people deal with it so they can get better!

No one ever believes that you are sick with fybro or chronic fatigue till they experience it first hand.Luckily I have a great doc.who specializes in these fields.I cannot say that I am getting better but sustained is better than doped up on Oxycontin. A pain clinic will only give you a addictive med. that will in the end make it 10 times worse. You need a doctor who knows and believes to treat you properly.

ive switched several times and tried out all kinds of different type docs and had anywhere from the non believers to the pill pushers and been on every pain med there is (including morphine and fentanyl) and none of them work so i just dont take anything which unfortunately makes it to where i cant work which drives me nuts.. i want to try like acupuncture and stuff but insurance wont pay for anything that isnt the standard and well the only thing left is a epideral and im scared of those

i think that the last part of your discussion answered your query. true, most medicines actually do not cure but they are necessary to support your body to recover faster. your body may take its own time to recover but the side effects during that time needs to be taken care of. for example in case of fracture, no medicine can cure but you need a plaster to ensure that the affected part has no movement enabling it to heal faster, also since there is much pain you also need pain killers. however some medicines are addictive in nature (like anti depressants), which we consume even if we feel slightly depressed. i believe that such medicines should be accompanied with a bit of counseling so that you are aware as to when you need it and when you have to avoid it.

it might be the initial response they get from medicines (relieving of the problem) and then they expect same results everytime even if it is a minor problem.

the world works in this way now-anything that does not give instant gratification is discarded, ayurveda and homeopathy works on the root cause,so the symptoms may sometimes flare up before subsiding,i think thqats the reason why only a few opt for it.

my problem with myself and natural cures or treatments is im allergy to anything in nature so i dont know what ingredients i may be allergic to and then also what might mix badly with my meds i already take.. its taken so long to finally get things some what settled in a routine of certain meds i dont want to mess with it and then my bipolar go nuts or my have an allergic reaction sending me to the er again.. if i wasnt on so many meds already i would check it out but i have heard so many horror stories.. maybe if i ever get my amount of meds lower i will try some

You know there are medications that do, do their job, but I tend to feel that we are overwhelmed with perscriptions. As you said biopolar is a specific thing that needs a balance between other medications. I do more home cures for the colds and honestly I drink viniger everyday to keep my body buildt up so the common colds don't effect me like in years past. There are some great home remedies out there and natural supplements that can be taken to help ease pain in joints (even our diets can build up your natural antioxidants), but I think what a lot of people fail to see is that the natural things we take can cancel out what perscriptions do or even cause more harm than good. This is why I would like to see more herbalists around to help people create the balance between what they need as a perscription from their doctor and what will really help them and even what they need to stay away from. I know I get people that read up on one thing or another and think they can use it, but in all reality unless I check it through someone first, I'm not taking it because we just don't know what it will do or not do for us. I do agree that pain medication after surgery does help the body heal becuase pain can be a major stress on the body. I know when was missdiagnoised with problems I had (was just over a year of it) and after found a doctor that would listen to me, he said that the pain i'd been living with ulcerated my colon. So pain is a major factor and can really screw your body up if it's not controlled.

you put things exactly how i feel.. natural remedies are good but not all the time and some people just dont understand its dangerous to play around with things.. i mean after all everything we have now that is toxic came from the earth some how..

I only take meds if I really feel sick. I do have allergy tablets that I take if my allergies are real bad. It do not cure the allergy but it does releave the headache, stuffy nose and watery eyes to they are not to bad and then I can go on for a long time until they flair up real bad again. I have also hear that it is better to take pain pill after surgery because it does relax your body so it can heal because if you are in pain you tense your body up and it makes the pain worse.

Well, it's impossible to cure a cold, there's no medical treatment for that, but medicines can help you to have a less worse experience. The medicine is not treating the sickness, but the sypmthoms. I don't see anything wrong in taking advantage on modern medicine to have a more confortable life.

I am on so many medications. I have allergies, Asthma, four skin conditions, and I have PMS/PMDD. I don't like taking the medications, but I feel like I have no other choice but to take all of these different medications. I hate it.

well i think that many over the counter meds do just mask the symptoms, but they make you feel better while you are suffering with whatever you have. my doctor always dont me 'don't be a hero' if something hurts, do something about it.

moonlitmagikchild hi My opinion is that I do not want to keel over with a stroke, or go into a diabetic coma so yes I do take the medications my doctor has prescribed for me. I would be a fool to say no and just go along letting my blood sugar get out of control, or have a stroke and be half paralysed. So I gladly take my medications as I fully trust my doctor. I have been his patient for many years, and he really knows my body and my medical history. My doctor does not give medications easily. if I have a cold he says antibiotics will not help a thing. Or if I ask for a sleeping pill he says I would rather not as they are highly addictive. use benadryl for your allergie and to help you sleep better. and it does work.

well those are the types you have to take something for to keep it in check.. but it sounds like you have a good doc and not one that just hands out meds for every little thing

I absolutely hate taking medications for anything, unless it's like an antibiotic or something like that. I have depression, but I've never taken meds for it, it's just something I try to work through on my own by just learning more about myself, my mood, my triggers.. things like that. My last doctor's appointment, the doctor tried to give me quit smoking pills, weight loss pills, depression pills. I mean what isn't there a pill for?? Nope, I refused them all. None of them will work. It starts with will power and determination. I've quit smoking cold turkey. I've lost over 30 lbs with just diet and excersize. I can handle my own depression. Obviously anyone can do it without pills! Then the doctor told me I had high cholesterol, and before even discussing diet and excersize, she tries to offer a pill. Are you kidding me??

yep.. i have had several docs that just would push pills on me and stupid me trusted them when i first got diagnoised for fibro since no one really knew anything about it and they had me messed up for years!! whats crazy is my old shrink i had would give me a pill for every prob.. one for anxiety, one for bipolar, add, depression, insomnia, etc now i just take the add, anxiety and depression and just manage my bipolar on my own.. i have found that i cant go less than that amount with out one getting too unbearable but i didnt need the bipolar med and the sleeping pills didnt work so why take them?? some of these problems and pills can be combined and taken care of by one pill but some docs just wont do that and you end up with a huge Rx bill and your system more messed up than before! i dont even take pain pills anymore and they had me on 3 diff kinds at once! obviously with asthma i cant go off stuff for that but im taking allergy shots in hopes to get rid of 1 if not both my allergy meds and maybe by miracle my asthma meds since its induced by my allergies.. i hate taking so many pills so i just try to take the bare miniumum which i still feel is too much but oh well it could be a lot more if i listened to them!

Hello how are you? I agree with you that meds mask the pain. I was just talking about this today. After reading your blog, I thought I'd share some information with you regarding a product that I and my wife are using that has changed our lives and it is a nutritional supplement that is all natural and it works. Please view our blog on energy4u.max4u.com. Let me know what you think. Alvin and Brenda Harrison
