What do you do with your toilet paper cardboard rolls?

When all of the toilet paper is gone and all is left is the brown roll. What do you do with this? I know that many people will use these to make things out of. But for my mother-in-law it is very different. When the toilet paper was all gone, she would leave the brown roll sitting on top of the toilet. It would stay there for weeks and weeks. If I don't move it it will sit on top of the toilet. Don't you think that this brown roll should be at least thrown in the trash can if it is not going to be used? Why would she leave it in the bathroom for such a long time if she or no one else is plan on using it for something. It looks odd just sitting on top of the toilet, not being utilized. So, in your home, what do you do with the brown cardboard roll?
I never said anything about it to her until one day.. I told her that it needs to be thrown in the trash can if it is not going to be used. After that, I no longer saw the cardboard roll sitting on the toilet. It made the bathroom look messy and it just did not belong there sitting on top of the toilet. There was many times that I would just take it and throw it in the trash can. But I feel that if she was the last one to use up the last bit of tissue, she should at least throw it in the trash can, don't you think?

Hello Cream. I think that is odd. Wonder why she didn't just throw it away. Me I used to make things out of all kinds of trash. But I haven't the time much any more to make things out of stuff like this. I used to hot glue them together and make a cute little round thing then paint it and hang it on the wall to put stuff in. Good that you got her to start throwing them away. I think they do look messy sitting around on the back of the toilet.

If you have a kid at home who has so many toys, but is so bored playing with them, and screams at you that they want another toy, then you can entertain them and teach them how to make a toy puppet out of these toilet paper cardboard rolls. You will need some white gloves, multicolored felt pens, white paper, art paper, glue, yarn and other materials like scissors, glue. First, you have to decide what you are going to make, is it an animal or a person or an alien, I leave it to your imagination. You gotta wrap the cardboard roll with white paper. Draw a face of the human or animal or alien( it's not limited to this) over this, a cute one that kids will like. You can make hair for the puppet by cutting yarn and placing at the top portion of the cardboard roll. You can also make the ears, eyes and other parts by using cutouts.Once you have done this, you now wear the white cloth gloves and insert the toilet paper cardboard head on your middle fingers, leaving the pinky and the thumb free. The thumb and pinky will serve as your puppet's hands. Now you're set to do your puppet show. I know you might have better ideas than this but this is what I could think off. Thanks!

My dear cream97, how old is your MIL? Is she very old? If she is then she may be forgetful. It's good that you have been patient with your MIL. Yes, keeping house and making sure places like the toilet and kitchen are clean is vital to health and happiness. Everyone has a moral obligation to see to this aspect of life, the old as well as the young. But, equally important is how we tackle problems in our every day life.

I'm as old as your MIL. I think you have a point here. But, I would not like to be a wedge in your relationship, cream97. Does she suffer any form of mental problems? If that is so, it is possible that she does not remember what she says or does.

I have a small trash can sitting by my toilet. When the toilet paper roll is all gone then I throw or whoever use it all up throws it in the small trash can. Then that person will put a new roll of toilet paper on the hanger. If someone does forget to change the use up roll then I will do it myself no big deal.

Hi, happy6162. If the person uses up all of the toilet tissue and leaves the roll behind, and they leave it here for weeks, would you still pick up after them? And what if this was continuous thing? Surely, you would have gotten tired of picking up after them??

You ask her about it and said that you do not see it anymore. I might ask why they did not throw it in the trash and I am sure they will if they forget than just throw it away not a big deal.

When the roll gets empty it seems that it is never me who empties it. It is just me and hubby in the house so if it is not me then it has to be him. He does the same thing. He just sits it down in the floor. I then come in have to throw it into the garbage. I guess that makes me a empty toliet paper roll throw awayer..LOL
Have a good day and keep smiling.

Most of the time I usually put it into the recycler bin. Sometimes though I do use them for other purposes. When I store my christmas lights, or extension cords, I unwind the roll, lay the lights, or etc, inside and re-wind the cardboard around. Actually, it's very handy as I have many lights, some to go on the tree, some for homemade wreaths, and they're all different lengths and with a different amount of bulbs on them. So, keeping them wrapped like that makes it handy to put the tree together at Christmastime. Plus, you can write on the cardboard roll what is set is wrapped inside. I do the same with all my extension cords, and it keeps my deep drawer in the kitchen a lot neater because they don't get tangled with the other towels, etc, that's in the same drawer.
This year I'm saving a few aside in the bathroom cabinet. Not for storing strings of lights, but to make sidewalk chalk with. lol, my little grandson loves those huge chalks to write on our asphalt driveway in the summertime. So, I take plaster of paris, some food coloring, and after it's mixed I pour it into one of the discarded rolls. (Cover the bottom with waxed paper and a rubberband so it doesn't leak out till it dries.) Once dry I unroll the tp tube and the chalk comes out. I only saved a few, and the rest will still go into the recycler. Try not to worry about your mil, for some reason she doesn't care, and it's no reflection on anybody but herself. Maybe she's depressed, or doesn't have energy, or maybe just doesn't think about it at all. If it was me, I'd just pitch it while I was in there and say nothing..

cream with all the real heart breaking problems right now
because of the economy the last thing I would stress over is
a hunk of cardboard. If mom in law is a slob just grab the
damened thing and toss it in the garbage.is it worth a fight
over? sure she should have done it but she did not. my roomie
'is the same way so I just toss it in the trash can. I have
enough real issues to worry about without stressing over the
small stuff.Or you could write up a list of these things and just give it to her. might make here change her ways. just dont stress over it.

Well I for one am not a crafty person, so I wouldn't know what to make with those rolls, so I just throw them away, as soon as its empty, I don't leave it sitting around, why would you. Maybe your mil just doesn't think about it at the time, but I mean if its still sitting there a week later, surely you'd notice it and throw it away..haha.

We don't do anything with our old toilet paper rolls but throw then in the garbage. There are some times when the kids will sometimes take them and use them for school projects or other projects that they want to do. We have a garbage can in both bathrooms that way once the rolls are used they can be thrown out. I am the same as you, I always tell the kids that once they are done with the roll throw it in the garbage and I have never had a problem with them not doing so. How I see it is if you can take the time to sit it on the top of the toilet why can't she just throw it in the garbage??? Well at least it seems like after you said something she seemed to understand that it is messy, she could still be doing it LOL

As soon as all the toilet roll has been used and all that is left is the cardboard roll, then into the rubbish bin it goes. Well there are occassions when I have forgetten to do it straight away and it has been left in the bathroom for a short while, but it's in the bin.
I will be honest and say that I have never thought of using the cardboard roll for anything else. Even sitting here now trying to come up with an idea, I cannot come up with anything at all, and I am one of those people that is all for saving money and cutting costs.

Hi, kelly10. I am all about saving and cutting costs myself. I have never used the roll for anything either. It is okay to let it sit for a while, but for days, is just odd. I mean my mil would use the bathroom many times a day, and I would be surprised to see that she just leaves it there. I thought at first, that she had forgot it.. But after seeing her go to the bathroom the next day and the day after the next, I know she was just being plain old lazy..

I squash mine flat and store them in a box. In the spring I use them to grow seedlings in. Plug the bottom with some rolled up newspaper and then put in some compost mixture and add the seed. This is very good for plants with delicate roots - such as parsnips. You just plant the whole tube when it is time and it breaks down naturally in the soil.

I tend to give the toliet paper cardboard rolls to my chinchillas since they love to chew on things to keep their teeth ground down. Other than that I will prolly just throw them in the trash or even throw them in the recycling bin which ever I feel like throwing the toliet paper cardboard rolls. I honestly get tired of seeing the rolls.

Ours usually get thrown away. We don't have much use for them. I occasionally do since I teach preschool and it's quite possible to use them for lessons in our classroom. We just have to plan accordingly so we can make sure we have enough on hand. We actually have more than we need in our room right now so we need to find a way to use those so all of our others just get thrown away!

I don't get it. Does she leave other types of garbage just setting around to gather dust as well? I wonder why she didn't at least tell you what her reasoning was behind leaving the empty rolls just sit there. I would definitely be curious, but then again, we all have our ways about us!
I usually just throw these away in the recycling bin. It wouldn't be a bad idea if someone could think of a craft to save them. But, if you don't have an idea, I don't see any reason for saving them. They usually are pretty easy to come by. LOL

Hi, kykidd. I don't get it or her either. I wanted to ask her the reason for her leaving it there but I did not want her to think that I was being silly. So, I kept my comment to myself. I was curious to know why, because she is the only one that leaves the roll behind without throwing it away. I have my ways about me, but that way with the roll, is odd... There are many useful things that you can do with the roll if you decide to keep it.

i take it throw it away as soon as the roll is empty and replace it with a new roll. my husband and son will leave the empty roll on the holder and then i get annoyed and replace it myself and of course mention it to them to be more considerate next time. i never leave the empty rolls around but then again i am a very neat person and it only makes sense to me to throw the empty roll away.

We segregate our trash and sell them. We get money out of trash. We have sacks which we use to store each kind of trash. We have a sack each for plastics, glasses, tins, steel and iron, copper scraps, computer scraps, and paper. We sell them to junk shops when they become abundant. For all paper products and cardboard, we place them together in a sack and get them ready for selling. It is bought by the kilo at the junk shops.

You mother-in-law should throw the rolls into trash can,I don't know why she'd like to put it on top of toliet. It will make the toilet looks strange and mess if two or three rolls together there.
I always throw the roll when tissue used up ,I haven't found any other usage for it.
