At the risk of raising a redundant discussion, I am going to discuss abour the rain again. I live in the part of the world where it rains more than 60% (I'm guessing, no facts to back it up, just feels like it) of the time. Even during winter, we get like a day or 2 of snow, but the rest of the season, it's just rain. I know that a lot of people get depressed about the rain. I also know that there are a lot of people suffering from depression where I live (again, no facts, just guessing). He11! I am guilty of this sickness most of the time. And I always attribute it to the rain. Last weekend, I actually met somebody who's not bothered with the rain. She had such a happy disposition that she wonders what's all the fuss about rain and depression? It got me thinking, why I am not like her? Why do I let the rain get me down? So, are you like her? Does the rain bother you? Or do you let the doom and gloom of the weather affect your mood? Is this a silly discussion or not?

This is not a silly discussion. There are a lot of people that suffer from seasonal depression. I know people that don't have depression any other time except when it is raining or overcast. Then there are those of us like myself that battle with it every day. I think women are more prone to depression than men because of their hormone fluctuations. But I know that many men suffer from this seasonal depression. My uncle does and he lives in south Georgia where there is sunshine most of the year. What I have recommended to people that have this type of depression is to experience something fun and exciting in the rain. This way your brain has an visual memory of something pleasant. When a rainy day comes replay the pleasant activity in your mind (like a movie). This is a basic distress tolerance skill. You train your mind to focus on something else besides what is hurtful or sad. It is a form of self-soothing. It is also a form of distraction. If you temporarily distract yourself it will free your mind from sadness. Choose things that you really enjoy to distract yourself. When I do this I usually do something special for myself. It is good to focus on yourself and your mental well-being. People like myself who are always doing for others don't allow themselves the time to focus on themselves. Doing this has kept me sane. It creates bridges from one painful episode to the next. It gives me the time to regroup and breathe. It works!! Try it.

Seasonal depression is a big thing in Alaska too. When my husband was working there a couple of years ago, they had these big light boxes available for the guys to sit in front of. The light is supposed to elevate the mood. I like grabbing the dog and the kids and running out to play in a warm rain. We had two weeks of gray and rain here this month and it was too cold to play out, the last couple of days of it I turned on every light in the house trying to simulate the sun, hoping to lift the moods of the little people I was trapped in the house with. It either helped or they got tired of whining, not sure which. At this moment my car is covered in snow. Our first this year. I love the snow.

I am interested in those light boxes! What are those? Are those something you can buy? Is it a bright room or something? It could be therapeutic!

I'll see what I can find out for you. They were a porable box with I think a flourescent bulb, you set it on a desk or table and sit n front of it for 15 or 20 minutes throughout your day. I'll try and find the info today.

Raindrops are falling on my head but that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red, crying's not for me Rain can be very depressing, especially if plans are ruined, or if it's just a generally cloudy, dreary day. Some people get more bothered by it then others but I think that other factors come into play as well that makes people feel depressed during rain. Such as financial strain or job strain. Well I hope you can have the same sunny disposition as the lady you met.

Something in your song made me want to wear big collared-shirts and bell bottoms. With the recession still hanging over our heads, causing the financial and job strain everywhere, I can't feel but depressed too. I still wish I had a stronger resolve and a happier disposition like her. Well, hopefully the spring will bring in a better mood all around. Thanks.

I hope the holiday season cheers you up a little as well. Sunny Dispositions are hard to come by, they just don't sale them... and if they did It'd probably cost an arm and a leg...

I love the rain but not the damaging kind of rain LOL. I love it when it rains after suffering from too much heat. I love the rain because I don't need to water my plants everyday. I love the rain because it makes the temperature cooler and I love to drink something warm and do nothing or curl up and watch TV. I am not depressed when it rains. Some people don't like when it rains because it gets muddy really and it's always not good to get a ride when you don't own a vehicle. And it's not a silly discussion LOL

As I can see that you're in a tropical area of the world, I guess the rain does help cool down the heat, and water the plants, etc. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I love the rain! It's the sunlight that puts me into a relatively bad mood; I hate it so much. Sunlight just doesn't do it for me, I don't care if it activates the vitamin D in my skin or some other supposed health benefit. One of these days I'm going to move somewhere where there's more rain and thunderstorms than there is sunlight.

The rain have a verry intreresting efect over me.... i don't know why but the rain make me different. The rain calm me down when i am nervos, the rain help me to think more clear... i love to stay closer to the window and watch out how is raining...i love to drive in rain. The rain make me more melancolic and more familist. When is raining i build new plans new, ideeas and i am refreshing myself sentimental..i am more attend with the persons i love. Also i recalculate my situation. In our country we have a quote reffering to the rain..."Is time to count the money" or "Is time for making children" :)

You must then be artistic for feeling this way in the rain. I bet you can also do something creative at these times too. Not that counting money or making children is not creative! What ideas do you do? Do you write poems or songs when it's raining?

No, this is not a silly discussion, I am one of those people that rain, puts me in a happy disposition, I really enjoy it because I don't like the heat and dry weather! But, I do know a lot of people that get depressed and gloomy in wet weather! I guess we are just two different types of people! ps- bounce ,thank you for the best response you gave me on the 'eating while driving post'!

You are definitely one of few! A happy disposition even when it is raining. I hope your kind multiplies and reach those others who are put on a miserable mood when they see a cloudy and gray sky. Welcome on the BR!

I hate the rain as there is always a problem getting the linen dry as well as there are always foot prints every where when the children keep in and out.The children hate getting wet as well as getting cold so they are miserable. There are always things that i have to do in the garden every day as i have chickens as well as other birds so i get soaked sorting them out as well as the rabbit.

Oh no! What happens to the chickens and the birds when it rains? Do theyhave somewhere to hide? Are they in a covered cage? For some reason, I am thinking of the chickens we had when I was little. They too ran around the backyard. When it rained, I would see them hiding, perched up in corners under our house roof trying to keep dry.
