One of my grandmothers always gives each of the grandchildren a stocking every Christmas... inside it are indiviually wrapped items such as a toothbrush, soap, pens, gum, and various items from her workplace (like pads of prescription paper... she works at a doctor's office). It's become a joke every year between the grandkids - we always sit there and say, "Oh! Here's the toothbrush!"... This year all the grandkids are going to get random things and stuff from OUR workplaces to make a giant stocking for my grandmother:)

My kids aunt (my ex's sister) works in a dentists office and gives the kids toothpaste and toothbrushes for Christmas.
I stuff all kinds of stuff in the kids stockings.

I like Pez dispensers for the kids. Razors, shaving cream, deordorant, kitchen tools, etc.

I find some great little items at the dollar stores. My grandkids love the towels you put in water to expand to full-size.

We aren't doing stockings this year as we probably won't be getting very many gifts for ourselves due to money reasons. But when I was younger we got small toys and fruit in ours!

Finances aren't good with us either. If it weren't for the dollar store I wouldn't be able to afford to fill the stockings.

Candles are great for the adults. I usually buy unscented candles to put in the stockings because the snack food will absorb the scent of the candle. Floral scented chocolate anyone?

Stockings are our favorite part.... and I always go overboard with them. Some items I've put in them in the past are:earrings
candy
gum
pickled sausage
beef jerky
lip gloss
matchbox cars
gift cards
inexpensive jewelry
mini colognes
toothbrush
dental floss
christmas tree ornament
pens
pencils
deck of cards
dice
small picture frames

OMG I forgot about the pickled sausage! I will have to get a couple of those for my sons' stockings. They will get a kick out of that.

I always put a couple pairs of socks, for everyone in their stockings. For the kids I put a couple little toys, and of course candy. For the grown ups I put little things-a new toothbrush, some hair things, cologne, etc, and usually just one or two of their favorite candy.

I have never thought about socks, but maybe some of those stockings in a tube would be a cute idea.

When I do the gift card thing, I wrap them up in boxes, one inside the other.

I put a few personal items, a snack or two, and a couple of small gift certificates, and a small dollar store toy. Kids cannot wait to open them.

Snacks are great! When my kids were little I would put granola bars, cocoa mix, breakfast bars and fruit in their stockings. I would wrap everything that went in. This was the only thing they could open before I would come downstairs for the big event.

My parents will put things in there like socks, gas/gift cards, gum/candy, lottery tickets, pony tail holders (I can never have too many of those. I go through them like CRAZY), chapstick. Just normal stuff like that, that I'd need.
