During exam preparation, how do you manage to stay awake?

One of the problems that most students face is unable to concentrate on books, and feeling sleepy when you are preparing for your exams. They will plan to study things overnight, but due to tiredness, and lazyness, they will sleep, and forget about the exams. Somepeople keep alarms, when the alarm goes on, they get up and extend it to next 30 mins, then so on. What do you feel about this problem? What can we do to solve this?

The alarm concept is quit good infact, during my college years, I would study for a couple of hours then take a 20 minute nap. If I felt sleepy again I would set my alarm for twenty minutes again then when it went off I would continue studing for few hours more or until about 2 am. Then I would actually get about 5 hours of sleep before I had to get up and get ready for classes. You really have to learn self-discipline. Once you train yourself to take little naps from time to time you'll find the next time you have to cram for exams it is alot easier.

Self discipline! That is where everybody fail. If not everybody, at least me. It is a challenging task to develop self- belief all of a sudden at the age of 19-21. Because during this age, you have experienced things and come to a conclusion, whatever discipline you have, it is not worth. Most teenagers get into wrong acts just because of the lack of self discipline. Rightly said!!

Preparing for the exam is not on the day before the exam. That wouldn't work you will really be tired and sleepy at that and nothing happens. The best thing to do in preparing for the exam is study ahead like one or two weeks before the exam. Well, if that is mid term or final exam, am sure the lessons will be from the very start of the unit or the previous lessons and some new topics too, If you mastered the previous lessons, you don't need to cram. Always study ahead of time and the night before the exam is just a short review and sleep early. Most problems of students is that they studied hard on the night before the exam which is not advisable and not really good. Studying ahead of time is really effective. what you need to do is just a short review on the night before exam.

I don't stay up late to study because I'll forget everything. I have a different study routine. I study all the things i need to study and make notes until 8 or 9 pm and then sleep. I wake up at 4 30 am and review these notes until i leave the house. When i get to the examination place ,I read my notes once then relax a bit then 10 minutes before the exams i read my notes one last time and pray that i remember the things i have studied.

See you wake up at 4.30, that is where the problem is. Everytime I decide of a time, the next thing I will do is keep alarm. After that, I will switch off the alarm once it rings.

I'm now preparing for some BIG exams, and I feel sleepy after just 5 minutes of studying. It's really horrible! My trick is, apart from energy drinks and lots of caffeine, alternating studying methods. I mean, a little bit of theory, a little bit of homework. Homework makes me stay awake meanwhile theory makes me sleepy. Also, when my brain has completely stopped working because of being extremely sleepy I just use the computer a little. I check my e-mail, look at some funny websites. That's enough to wake me up for at least 5 minutes more.

Caffeine, alternative study methods, alternative focus. Nice and valid points. Can you give some more?

Hmm... well, I really don't know. I usually force myself to stay up, but that rarely happens anymore. I just don't bother. :) But I will usually wake up early the next morning to study and cram everything in the morning though. Works everytime for me. ;) Don't know 'bout you though.

I am sure everyone has heard this advice, although I think few people follow it: if you follow a proper study course during the semester all you need to do the night before a big exam is sleep well. In my early days in college I did a lot of cramming at the end of the semester. Everybody else did it and it seemed normal. I finally learned to keep up all through the semester. All I would need the night before a final exam was a brief overview of the entire semester. 30 minutes, tops. This method works. If you are sleepy you are not likely to do well on an exam, even if you know the subject matter pretty well.

Group study might work for you. Get a companion and you two can make plans for studying. It works and you might be able to save time. Try it out.

preparing for an exam is, without boasting, no big deal for me. i prepare each and everyday as if there would be a pop quiz. we've been told time and again to always study and that's what i do. sometimes i even get exempted in these major exams. at this point, i'm 34, i found out that studying everyday is just the same as making yourself prepared in each and every undertaking one decides to have in life. it does pay off good.

coffee doesn't work on me, so is tea. I try hard to keep my eyes open. cold water splashing face is a good way. change subjects may refresh my mind a little bit.

I share the same experience of adjusting the alarm clock. With this bad habit I end up sleeping rather than studying. Staying awake on my part is a great will to push myself to really wake up and study. Sometimes, i would do some mental conditioning before I sleep, so when I woke up I can study well.

Hi, first of all, i want to say "it is not necessary for people to study all the night." Although we have to read and review a lot of books, but how about efficiency? Everything has its time. when it is time for sleep, i suggest, we should just go to bed and restore the energy for tomorrow's work. Make study be an enjoyable thing instead of a burden. :)

the best solution is time management. I was a student before and it hard for me to do the things i wanted especially the time of exam. I really feel lazy when studying my lesson and ended failed in my exam. but thing have change when a good friend of mine teach me how to manage the time. It is hard at the start but when time come it well become easy. The key is You have to set you goal and target and make firm decision.

Well if I'm trying to stay awake to study I would probably grab an energy drink or something like that. I would drink coffee but I'm not a real big coffee drinker. I would also give myself checkpoints to reach while I'm studying so that way I'll be able to go farther before taking a break.

hi balaji, it is funny to describe the exam scenario we face here living in a hostel, live with friends here and we enjoy most of the times and when exams approach we start studying merely just a week before they are scheduled to start... we stay up late and try to get things into our heads as much as we could ... well we do feel sleepy and all, especially the night before the exam we don't sleep at all! it is the whole night awake mugging things up, our computers are on and we listen to some music in the background or at times we have a break we watch some video or the other, essentially it is the entertainment that the computer gives us that keeps us from falling asleep during exams times, i just hope we could have studied much earlier and we would not have required to go through something like this, although it might sound like fun but it is not... but these days we will remember sometime when we pass out of this place and all the fun we had living in a hostel, sweet memories will remain

Hello b4balaji this is checkmail and often do really study hard but only for some time.Yeah it was earlier difficult for me to stay awake while studying, but latr got this pro solved by perfoming some Yoga in the mornings and meditations in the evenings. Both the yoga and meditations are good to boost our body physics and mind concentration.Especially it gives us enough energy to feel all the time fresh.Earlier used to have some coffee to stay up but now don't ned it anymore.Am comfotable while studying, specially that scared feeling about the performace of our is gone now.Confidence is an imp thing while we are studying.

One has to study days before the exam thats the ideal one to do but cramming is the best thing to have a thrilling evening of studying. When going to cram One has to sleep hours before the scheduled studying period. In that set up one will have a focused mind, relaxed state of thinking and could absorb most of the readings. In my experience green tea could make me awake and functioning well. Makes me awake and study all I can.

balaji, there are few tips which worked out for me.. have a very limited dinner in night so your body wont become lazy to get up in morning.. go to bed early in exam times because late night studies wont help much.. dont stress yourself in those days.. have nutritious food and add more fruits in your diet.. spend some time to watch comedies in day time so your mind will be relaxed and you can concentrate well.. as soon as u get up in morning, brush your teeth and go for a small walk and then sit for studies.. try this..

Most of the time I force myself to stay awake. Sometimes I turn on the television or radio to help myself keep awake. I also eat sweets frequently in small amounts. But if it can't really be helped, I consume energy drinks instead of coffee.
