How would you feel if this man was on your flight?

Personally I cannot in my life believe he was allowed to board this flight. After all, he is quite clearly taking up nearly the entire walkway which is a health and safety hazzard. I guess people who are obese might look at this opinion being unfair but it's a hard fact that if my 6 foot 5 boyfriend wants some leg room he isn't allowed to put even his foot into the aisle! I was discussing this with someone and we agreed we probably would leave the flight and get a different one for fear of something happening. Surely, American Airlines would realise their passengers would feel rather unsafe and at the least uncomfortable on this flight and ask him to move to another space where there were two consecutive seats? I have only flown Virgin Atlantic when going to America but I can only imagine each airline company wants to keep their passengers just as happy. This world is crazy the extent people go to not be called judgemental! What would you think if you were on this flight and what you feel like if you were sat next to this person? Would you even notice?!

First of all, I would also feel sorry for this person. Being obese is really bad for health. Even so, tall people usually have to sit in places too small for them, and they do so without bothering the other passengers, so even if that person is obese because having some kind of metabolism problem, he shouldn't bother the nearby passenger. I have traveled with this kind of people who seems to take land over my seat too, and I can swear I travel way more unconfortable than him. I think that person should book 2 seats.

Hi pinklemonade, I saw this earlier and was going to respond but I still feel I'm missing something. Where is the picture which is making the other respondants respond. I get the idea that there's some obese person on the plane but someone talks about him hanging over the aisle, what am I missing here. An obese person wouldn't make me feel tha that the flight was unsafe but I definitely would refuse to give up an inch of the space that I'd paid for to accomodate someone elses size overflowing onto me. Basically if the belt won't buckle then pay for two seats, don't make someone else who has paid feel uncomfortable by invading their space.

That's a safety hazard. People can't get by because he is blocking the isle.

Daah, I hardly ever open links but my curiosity was piqued and I fully intended to open this one - but it won't work. Would you mind to try again for me please.

it's clearly not safe. from the way he was hanging out across the aisle like that, I'm guessing they couldn't find him two adjacent seats, so he could just pay for the additional seat. I feel sorry for anyone next to him. I've had very unpleasant train journeys next to people much smaller than that. one person, on sitting down, then got up and raised the arm rest (which I put down when a train is busy to try and maintain my personal space a bit) which then meant that they were sat with their body partly on top of me. which isn't fair. I don't care how uncomfortable it is to sit next to the arm rest if you're overweight, should that give you the right to raise the armrest and sit on me? I think not I know that there are many reasons why people can find it hard not to put on weight. for a long time my partner was on medication that made him crave unhealthy food, and he did put on a lot of weight, but then when he put his mind to it, he ignored the cravings, ate healthily and exercised. ultimately, whatever other reasons CONTRIBUTE, the cause of obesity is taking in more calories than you need. aeroplane seats are fairly accomodating. they have to be, as people need to sit in them, often for long periods. I don't think they should be made to double the size of the seats just because of a small minority.

a good point there. it's probably much riskier to fly if you're that overweight, doesn't it increase risk of things like blood clots? I don't think people should automatically get a free extra seat. maybe to be allowed one if the flight is not fully booked, but as we often hear, the flights are very often overbooked to allow for people not turning up, and sometimes people don't get the seat they have paid for when everyone does. so no one should get an extra seat for free unless there is one spare.

I would not think much on it, I'm sure. I know plenty of really big people and I also know the airlines have charged for 2 seats for them and been challenged on that policy. Being so large is a health risk anywhere but it doesn't make me feel that I should get a different flight. Smokers are a health risk and they fly all the time. Their unhealthy habits just are not as obvious as an obese person. It would not bother me to be on the same flight with this person or to even sit next to him.

The airlines reservation staff should put the man on the last lane or in the first seat of the plane so that he would not let other disturb by his weight.

I definitely see where you're coming from, but I think I would feel sorry for him too. I wouldn't really be concerned about something happening during the flight just because he's on the plane, but I can see how, if something in fact did happen, it could be a bit of a safey hazzard. However if the airlines didn't let him on the plain I can also see how there could be a huge discrimination law suit. I think it's just a sensitive subject. My husband actually had to sit next to a really large man not all that long ago when he was on his way home from a business trip. It put him in a really bad mood because he was literally being pushed up against the window because this guy couldn't fit into the seat without practically sitting on my husband's lap. Now if I was in my husband's place I probably would have gotten a little claustrophobic and would have been VERY uncomfortable having to spend the whole flight more or less trapped in my seat. Personally, if I were that large (regardless of whether or not it was a medical problem or I just lived an unhealthy life) I don't think I would want to fly to begin with. I already don't like to be crammed into a small space with so many people. So, although it would take a little longer to travel from point A to point B I would probably take the train.
